About the property

2 BR, Pull out couch, panoramic river views, secluded, close to beach, fishing.

Escape to a secluded 900 sq foot waterfront cottage nestled in the 19th century Forsyth Granite Quarry on the North side of Grindstone Island. Located on a 2 acre parcel adjacent to a 15 acre preserve, expect privacy & beautiful wildlife. Grindstone Island is 3 X 7 miles, mixed farm/forest, dozens of miles unpaved roads.

************

To be clear: you are getting away- no stores, no bars, no paved roads. There is no bridge/ road access to the Island. Access is by boat, barge or water taxi. Taxi service is roughly $100 (11 mile ride from Clayton) RJ Marine (315) 686-9805.

***********

Deep water 30 foot dock, 10 foot diving board, Swim deck, 2 canoes, kayaks, New Braunfels smoker/grill, propane grill, bicycles, fire pit. firewood, propane & charcoal included. 12' long new park style picnic table, cedar adirondack chairs, benches, etc. Fish cleaning station. Wood fired hot tub, Cement outdoor ping pong table.

Large master bedroom (14X12) w/ queen & bunks, small bunk room (8X12), full size pull-out couch. Fireplace, full bath, fridge, dishwasher, electric range, microwave. After hard freeze dates, there is an outdoor composting toilet (fancy outhouse NOT used in Summer and typical rental dates). Full size washer/ dryer. Bathroom in house recently redone, tile, sink, flush toilet, oversize shower.

Walking distance to Dodge Hall Community Center/dance hall, Thurso Methodist Church, and 3/4 mile walk to Potter's Beach. 1/2 mile from 40 acre shoal Muskie fishing grounds. More than 1000 feet of waterfront, impressive views of river & quarry red granite cliffs. We are about 6 miles boat ride from Clayton and 2 miles to Gananoque, Canada.

Expect to see deer, owls, free range cattle, bald eagles, etc. Mink & otter have been seen nearby. Fishing for pike, perch, walleye, and muskie within site of the cottage. Guided fishing excursions can be arranged in advance. Guided hunting services (as well as Island Tours) for deer, turkey, waterfowl can also be arranged (in the appropriate season). We have even had local folk singers entertain at the fire pit - availability variable & must be arrayed in advance. . . Many options to make this your most memorable vacation ever!

Grindstone Island is rustic, free from convenience stores and asphalt. To insure a stress free visit, contact host about stocking food & beverages prior to your arrival. The Island is accessible only by boat, rentals are available at Clayton Marina. GPS & River Charts suggested.

A Captain/Guide is often available & suggested to escort you and/ or your boat to Thurso Bay- Contact host about this service. If you do not have a boat we can likely get you to & from the island as an added service!

For the truly adventurous, we can even arrange to barge your SUV/Jeep or other suitable vehicle to the island!

This particular property is close to most everything 'happening' on Grindstone Island, yet the surrounding woods and quarry provide a buffer against much of the Summer Island bustle. While the beach and the dance hall are a short walk, there is just enough geography that it's quiet when you settle in for the night.

Gananoque Ontario is a a short boat ride away. A Nexus card for all travelers makes excursions there a LOT easier- call in/ out on your cell phone. The Nexus card is less hassle free compared to an enhanced license or passport. Attractions in Gananoque include a playhouse, art stores, and a half dozen excellent restaurants.

Our first experience in the Thousand Island was our honeymoon, September 2001. We mutually fell in love with the River; this led to local employment, children, and Grindstone Island.

This cottage is equipped with a wood stove insert, a monitor kerosene heater as well as an out house/ composting toilet that is used during winter months (traditional bathroom during Spring, Summer, Fall). This makes spending a few days on the Island over the Winter an enjoyable adventure!

Why Theresa & Bruce chose Thousand Islands

Great spot. This is the heart of the Thousand Islands. Close to Potter's beach, is situated on the most beautiful part of the river in our opinion!

What makes this cottage unique

Secluded setting, large level lot, deep water dock, quarry views behind house, river vistas in front. Hot tub, outdoor ping pong. You are isolated from your neighbors by geography.

Awesome!

Once again, the annual family gathering was great! The new hot tub was amazing and the kids are constantly on the move. It is just so much fun. By December, everybody will be questioning me as to when "cottage week" is for 2016. Thank you to Bruce & Theresa for another great week!

Absolutely amazing!

Dear Bruce and Theresa!

Thank you so much for being such incredible hosts! Felt more like being part of the family and not just guests! We just got back yesterday and can't stop thinking of your cottage and the Gridtstone Island. It was so wonderful to be away from it all and enjoy the nature. The cottage is so well equipped with everything one may need and so clean! Loved the woodburning hot tub, canoes, swimming and fishing! Look forward to returning REALLY soon and will make sure to ride the bikes and explore the rest of the island!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

2015 Pike Pin Winner

  • 5 of 5

We stayed September of 2014 for the first time. Nephews and Uncles reunion. We had a fantastic time Fishing and having Coctail hour the other half of the day. Make sure you have a newer type GPS Depth finder and an aluminum prop with a spare. Do not run a stainless steel prop because it could toast your outdrive if you hit a rock. Go to Spicer Marina if you need a rental. They have the best boats and best rates. We are re-booking for 2015, Can't wait to be back. Thanks Dr. B

House is neat and tidy, bright and airy.

  • 5 of 5

We all enjoyed waking up in the morning and running outside to jump in the river before breakfast.  The kids especially enjoyed the diving board.  We took our boat out everyday to go sightseeing around the islands, and fishing and tubing. We went hiking through the forest, saw deer and heard woodpeckers.  We packed snacks and drinks and  enjoyed using the bicycles to explore the whole island.  We barbecued every night. When it got dark we’d make a big fire in the fire pit by the water, and sing and toast marshmallows.  Happy camping memories!

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking a few minutes to write a review. You guys were there the 20-27 of June last year.... Although that week is booked this year, the week prior is open (you can try out the cedar hot tub we are placing over by the diving board) and there are a few weeks later in the Summer for warmer weather!

Beautiful location, lots to do.

  • 5 of 5

We have rented this property two summers in a row and have already reserved our week for this year. Family always looks forward to it. Lots to do, kids love the diving board, kayaking and "adventurous treks" through the woods and granite outclimbs. Great fishing, water skiing & tubing in the bay. Fire pit for bonfires & smores with an excellent view of Canada. Thank you to the Baird's for allowing us to make awesome family memories.
