Am in my 60's, having had a varied business career, from banking to farming and all sorts in between, including tea rooms, restaurant, b and b, organic farm shop, computer staff agency, campsites and coarse fishing lakes. Still into beef and sheep farming, but interested in emerging locations such as Cape Verde. Have been in a wheelchair since breaking my neck in a horse riding accident in 1981.

Great apt and resort. Easy to travel into Santa Maria.
From the beginning Geraldine was very helpful, answering every question quickly. The location of apt is perfect, opposite a beautiful pool and short walk to hotel reception, all other pools/amenities and gorgeous beach. The apt is bright and comfortable and everything is as described. It has a pretty garden which has a shady patio for breakfast then full sun till evening. There s a courtesy bus or cheap taxis into Santa Maria tho we enjoyed the walk. In fact we enjoyed it so much we have already booked it for next year.
Absolutely great guests, a pleasure to host. Were quick to inform me of any problems, so things could be put right as soon as possible (although everything in Cabo Verde is very laid back and relaxed - manyana is next week, or next month!!). Look forward to seeing them again next year. Thank you Maureen and Colin.
Perfect apartment and fantastic location.
I had a lovely stay at Geri's apartment. Everything in the apartment is accurately described. The apartment offers plenty of amenities which is part of the resort. The city of Santa Maria is only a 5 minute taxi ride. Overall a pleasant experience and a fantastic holiday.
Thank you, Dat, for a nice review. I am very happy you enjoyed your holiday in my apt and the resort/town etc. You found some nice things to do! I look forward to hosting you again. Gx
Beautiful first stay at Cape Verde!
I stayed here with my friend for 2 weeks in July (which is low season) it was lovely and still plenty to do. The apartment had everything we needed and was in the perfect place; not too far from everything, but far enough away to have some peace and quiet. Having the freedom of self catering meant that we could stay in and cook on a few nights but you don't have to do this. We did eat at some of the restaurants (aqua was great) and you do have options of all inclusive if you want; we didn't in this case. There is a little seating area in the apartment where you can eat outside. There was an annoying person that kept flicking his/her cigarettes over the balcony which was a little annoying but this cannot be helped and staff do clean the outside areas and are very friendly. Geri was fantastic and always at hand when we needed her which made our first stay so much easier. Wonderful place and fanatic apartment. Couldn't of asked for anything else and looking at going next year.
Tips: go on some tours (you must try and island tour) But I would not recommend blinkys as we didn't have a great experience when we complained about the turtle tour (as it was that poor) and basically got ignored after that which was a shame as we wanted to book another trip which we missed out on because of this.
Also you MUST visit bikini beach which is on the beach next to the hotel complex (don't be put off by the name) yes it is a 'club' but through the day you can eat there and the food is out of this world and caters for families and has a little pool there. The staff are lovely also and we did go there often for lunch.
The entertainment in the hotel was great and there is something on every night or you can venture into Santa Maria on an evening.
All in all a fabulous holiday and fabulous apartment. Thank you Geri! X
A lovely review from a lovely guest. Thank you Jess, it will be very helpful for future guests and I look forward to welcoming you again next year (or when you need a top up of sun, sea and sand)!!!! I hope you liked the 'pink' replacement kettle that we gave you...? Unfortunately, it was the only colour they had in stock!!
Relaxing, comfortable, lovely grounds
The apartment is great, spacious for 2 people, fully equipped. right next to one of the quieter pools, good selection of DVDs/books available and check in was very easy.
Melia itself is lovely - total 5* resort. We didn't use the services there beyond the pools and the occasional drink (reasonably priced - £2 for coffee/small beer/tea) - we would have had a meal on site but found it too difficult to find prices/hotel staff kept giving different information with the check in guy just saying 'very expensive' so we decided against. Not a problem as it was just for our first night but it seems the only way to find out prices is to go and order.
The hotel is quite out of the way and obviously set up for all inclusive but once we figured out the area we were glad we had not gone for that option - there is a free bus from the hotel at 9, 10, 11am and back at 4, 5, 6pm. Taxis always available and we thought that taking a taxi a couple of times a day was a fair trade off for staying at such a lovely place. Also, the Ponta Preta beach restaurant was a handy find - 15 min walk there for times when you don't want to go into town for food. Food in town ranged from roughly 15euro for a meal and drink on the main road to 5 euro for a meal and drink in the local eats which were very good.
Cannot fault the weather in April, each day was bright sunshine, night times are quite draughty so long dresses/trousers and a jacket were more suitable.
Overall, this place is perfect for a peaceful, relaxing holiday and will be my choice of accommodation if I visit Cape Verde in the future.
Super review, thank you Rosie. Very informative and helpful for future guests!
Fantastically relaxing stay
We had an amazing time at Dunas.
We flew with Thomas Cook, had an uneventful flight that arrived on time. Took a few minutes to clear passport control, Thomas Cook sort the Visa for you as long as you've entered your passport details at least 10 days before arrival. (included in the price of the flights). Baggage reclaim took about 20 minutes but that was no problem, on exiting the baggage hall we were greatful to bypas the long Thomas Cook transfer bus queue and be met by a friendly taxi driver who took us to the hotel. Transfer time was 20 minutes and cost 15 Euros.
We only took Euros and never bothered to change any into CVE as we could pay everywhere in Euros. Occasionally we got CVE in change but just used it to buy things.
Checked in at reception and were given a band (for security). We chose not to upgrade to All inclusive and are glad we did.
The apartment is clean well stocked and comfortable. There was never anything we needed that we didn't have.
There was a loaf of bread some Butter and Milk in the fridge when we arrived which was lovely. We unpacked and went to explore around the grounds. The hotel is large and takes about 10 minutes to walk end to end. (its actually 2 hotels in one but if you're not utilising the restaurants you wouldn't know.)
We went to the supermarket located in the Villa Verde resort next door. its right in the middle of the resort and about a 10 minute walk. They had everything we needed for breakfast and lunches. Go in the morning to get fresh rolls/bread/croissants they tend to sell out by the afternoon. Milk, coffee, tinned goods fruit veg meats. (ham cheese etc). Its closed on Sundays.
We spent our days by the pool by the room as it was the quietest and had the least kids! We found that as it was a busy period (over Easter) we had to put our towels out at 0830 and were usually by the pool by 0930. The water is cold but it was actually fine once you were in! There was a constant breeze which was very welcome as it was 28 every day without a cloud in the sky.
We ate out in Santa Maria most nights. 4 Euros each way in a taxi and for 2 courses and a couple of beers it was around 50 Euros. Not cheap but I don't begrudge paying it as everything is imported and they make a real effort to make you feel welcome with what little they have.
We found the best was Marea, we didn't make Chez Pastis but hear good things so be sure to book a table, it was sold out the whole time we were there.
What a fantastic review Helen...just about everything covered that you could wish for, thank you. I can already see you coming back! just a note to mention that most restaurats are about 15-20 euros pp for a meal and drink, which is very reasonable i think.
clean, well-equipped, perfect size for us. well-located overlooking one of the quieter pools. other guests envious of our location as we were sipping wine or dining on the patio. would recommend this apartment, quite perfect.
the hotel was confusing as we upgraded to all-inclusive the second week, but overall the hotel was fab, good food, excellent pools and location, marvellous staff, particularly emilio.
Thank you, Beryl, so happy you enjoyed it, and look forward to welcoming you again - perhaps in Boa Vista next time!!
