I LOVED my stay in Shambhala! Matt and Rose are the perfect hosts!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed one week in Matt and Rose's beautiful "Shambhala" 3 room unit. I loved my space! Each morning, I would make a cup of coffee in the kitchen and sit outside among the brightly colored flowers and listen to the birds talking. I would then drive about 10 minutes to the beach and swim in the warm salted ocean for almost an hour. This is when I preferred to get most of my sun, in the early morning. I would return to my outdoor shower surrounded by rockery and plants. Nothing like my own outdoor shower! I had originally thought I would prefer to be on the ocean but I am so glad I changed my mind. I loved the drive each day. It added another experience -- driving along the ocean and listening to 60's music! Rose and Matt helped me select organic vegetables and other delicious foods at the Saturday morning Farmer's Market so I ate healthy while visiting the Big Island. This was more of a healing trip for me so I preferred to stay on the property and didn't visit the sights such as the volcanoes the island is known for. I enjoyed my canopy bedded room where I read and wrote each day. In the evening, I took long walks. The sunsets were magnificent. Rose and Matt are a wealth of information pertaining to the island since they have lived here for many years. I hope to return with my husband for another visit and will definitely stay once again in Shamhbala. Carol

Beautiful apt, convenient location, attentive host

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The property is nice, well maintained. It's about 20 mins from the beaches and feels like being on a farm. The host was pleasant and helpful. The outdoor shower was heavenly and the fresh eggs in the mornings were just delicious. Highly recommend.

Beautiful private retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Very well done! The property is split up well to offer guests privacy and seclusion. We enjoyed tasting bits from the garden and sitting outside in the evening watching the sun go down over Kohala. Would definitely return.

A bit of heaven in Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent four nights at this wonderful property. The decor was very luxurious and there were many spots inside and out in which to sit and read, watch the sunset or just contemplate life. The well-equipped kitchen and comfy surroundings were welcome after a busy day of sightseeing. A personal favourite feature was the outside shower. We would certainly return and would recommend the property to our friends.

Owner's Response: Aloha, We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at Shambhala and that you experienced all that we strive to provide our guests. The outdoor shower garden is quickly becoming a popular feature with our guests. I think sometimes the shower in the bathroom isn't even put to use. Thank you for allowing us to be your hosts. We hope to see you on your next visit to Hawaii Island. Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

Peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

  • 5 of 5

This newer unit of the owners numerous units was very very nice. You can tell that time has been taken to see all the great little details in their work in this rental and the property itself. The owner was very nice and helpful with everything throughout my stay. Would stay here or one of the other rentals he has to offer in a heartbeat.

We sure hope you do come back for another visit. You were a great guest and you'll always be welcome. Much Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
