Experience Shambhala in Hawaii

Our peaceful, two acre retreat is ideally situated 5 miles up from the best Kohala Beaches and 4 miles down from Waimea Town. An easy drive for visiting HPA parents too.

This is a beautiful, spacious hale that sleeps two guests. There is a separate master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and is appointed with luxurious linens and a private lanai.

You can shower in the private bathroom or experience a secluded outdoor shower garden under the stars.

There is a fully equipped kitchen where full meals can be prepared with organics from our farm and local Hawaiian foods from the nearby farmers markets.

The elegant dining area with large table seats four.

If you prefer, grill on the outdoor gas BBQ and enjoy Al Fresco dining on the second lanai.

The living area is a comfortable space for television viewing or relaxing with a good read from our library. The e queen size punee (Hawaiian Lounge) iis the perfect place for a relaxing nap with the.

The mountain and ocean views are enhanced by the mild temperature our 1700' elevation provides. This private apartment is a romantic honeymoon hide-a-way or comfortable home base for an Island adventure.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing opportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries and restaurants.

Great place to stay on Big Island

Pictures and description are accurate - this is a great place to stay. It was our first time in Hawaii and we followed some travel site recommendations suggesting we spend some time on one side of the island and then move to the other side. Unfortunately for us this meant we only spent 3 nights in this great place when we should have stayed the week. With the improvements to Saddle Road it is very easy to get from one side of the island to the other. You really can see everything from this location. Although it did not have a stove, this did not in the end was something we missed. The ambiance of the place and the outdoor shower (it really was wonderful) made this location very memorable.

The guide books don't realize how central we are to all of the best beaches, beautiful and historic towns and must see sites like Volcano National Park and Mauna Kea observatory. In place of the stove we do offer a double burner, state of the art, clean cooking induction cook-top, a large convection/toaster oven and a microwave oven. Better to take advantage of all the local foods found at the numerous farmers markets in the area. Thank you again for the opportunity to be your hosts for your first visit to Hawaii. Beautiful, secluded slice of paradise!

This place was incredible! We stayed here for 9 nights as part of our honeymoon and couldn’t have been happier. The house is connected to the owner’s home but you would have never known it. Except for a friendly greeting upon arrival, they gave us complete privacy.

The rental price is so affordable and the house is better than it looks in the photos. It was so spacious, clean and fully appointed with everything we could need. The gardens that surround it were beautiful and so abundant with fruit (bananas, papayas, lemons and oranges).

The location is great if you want to get away from the resorts. It is in a private neighborhood just outside the town of Waimea. We explored all parts of the island and never felt like we had to go out of our way. Hapuna Beach was only a 15 minute drive and is probably one of the most beautiful beaches on the big island. Hilo and Kailua Kona were both about an hour drive and Volcanoes National Park was about 2 hours.

The only criticism I can give is that we wished the back patio was a little larger and had outdoor lighting. The weather was so perfect and many evenings we sat outside and enjoyed a bottle of wine, but the patio was small and dark (except for the starlight!). But considering everything else the house offers, this was no biggie. We will definitely be back!

Lovely property and home on the dry side of Waimea.

This is a lovely place to stay on the Big Island. We loved the garden and all the details that went into making this property a luxurious vacation getaway. The bathroom was spa-like and my husband loved the outdoor shower. Kitchen and dining room was spacious and well equipped. The day bed in the living area is a relaxing detail. Wi-Fi and access to a laundry rounded out the amenities. The only downside was I couldn't find a cutting board. I definitely would stay here again!

We loved our beautiful zen den!

Ok, I'm a self-described travel snob and when my friend found this pretty place for my 50th birthday retreat, I'll admit, I was nervous. The pictures looked adorable but would it really be all that I hoped? You bet! From the lush fruit tree yard to the spacious, clean interior, Shambhala exceeded all of my expectations. The outdoor shower has inspired me to build my own. The waterfall in the garden coupled with a comfy bed made for sweet dreams. The kitchen had everything we needed to make our own breakfast and lunch every day. And, big bonus, Matt and Rose turned out to be very hospitable, interesting hosts. Other recommendations...Merrimen's Restaurant, the Na'apala Stables for horses, There's No Place Like Om for yoga, the White Rd hike, and Hupana and Mona Kea beaches are all awesome. I'll definitely be back. Enjoy!

Exceeded our expectations. Clean, clean and very well appointed.

This is an amazing place. I highly recommend it and I will stay again if I ever go back to the big island. If you rent a car it was very easy to get to great beaches and up to Waimea for good food and great hikes.

Matt and Rose were very personal and helpful. They live right next door but gave us our privacy.

The bed, towels and linens were top class. You need to rent this home.

Beautiful apartment in great location

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights. The place is gorgeous and very large. There is a well-equipped kitchen, brand new amenities, large dining room area and very big living room (with it's own bed). The bed is super comfy and the bathroom has 2 showers--one indoor, one outdoor (we loved using this!). There is laundry on the property which came in handy for us. The property itself is private, but not totally secluded. We could hear traffic from the main road and there were some cars driving around the property (looks like there is a farm out back that people were perhaps working on). This is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. The location is indeed 10-20 minute drive from some of the greatest beaches and nearby some good restaurants as well. It seems to be cloudy lots of the time because it is very high altitude, but we were always a short drive from sunshine! Would definitely stay again!

Shambhala is a great space with lots of extra amenties like the the outdoor shower and the Punee (Hawaiian Lounge) in the living room. It's nice to have that extra sleeping space if needed in addition to the private bedroom. We chose this property specifically for the secluded and quiet setting but still within easy access to the beaches and Waimea Town. Mauna Kea, one of the best Kohala Coast Beaches is about a 10 minute drive and the others just a bit further. Our 1700' elevation provides us with sunny, dry days and cool evening breezes. The main road is more that a quarter mile from the property and the absence of traffic noise is another reason we picked this spot to build on. The only other road is the private street into the subdivision that is for residents. I apologize for the cars that came and went one of the three days you were here. It was probably the landscapers. We do our best to keep the property maintained for our guests. Our two acres is not a working farm but we do have many organic garden areas and fruit trees. We always like to share whatever fruits and veggies are in season with our guests. Thank you again for the opportunity to be your hosts. Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
