Our home is your peaceful place of refuge and the answer to a relaxing visit on the Big Island of Hawaii. You will have exclusive use of a 3 bedroom, 2 full bath, 2 car garage house with laundry facilities in the Kona Paradise Subdivision, 25 miles south of Kona. The home is located at the bottom of Kaohe Road, 150 yards from Pebble Beach. It is an easy, non-exerting walk (both directions) to your own private, community beach.
You can hear the whales calling and the waves cascading onto the pebble shore. We have splendid views of the ocean and the mountains.
Our expansive wrap-around lanai is the perfect place to enjoy the cool ocean breeze, sip a delicious cup of 100% Kona or Kau coffee, check your email or eat a delicious papaya after awaking to the birds chirping and the beautiful hillside beckoning a morning hike. This is paradise!
Our 2-story home is clean and spacious with an open floor plan. It is three bedrooms, two baths with the living room, dining room, lanai, and kitchen on the upper floor and the garage and laundry below. The spacious master bedroom has its own sliding door onto the lanai, a plush pillowtop king size bed, walk-in closet, ensuite bathroom, and full wall of windows facing the southern view and lanai. The house has been professionally furnished from the Stanley Costal Living Resort Collection, Pottery Barn & Pottery Barn Kids. The sunlit guest bedroom features a pillowtop queen bed and shares a full bathroom with the third bedroom, containing two twin beds. All bedrooms, the living room and lanai have ceiling fans. The house is not air-conditioned; however, all windows are screened, there are two sliding doors onto the lanai, and plenty of ocean and mountain breezes. The expansive covered lanai (15' x 30') is easily accessed off of the living room and the master suite. You will find fantastic views and an enjoyable patio dining table and chairs to enjoy quiet mornings or sunset dinners.
The kitchen has brand new stainless steel appliances and is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, table linens, cooking utensils, blender, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, hot water kettle, rice cooker, waffle maker and baking pans.
We are located 25 miles south of Kona and 32 miles south of the airport, off of Highway 11. It is a beautiful, lush and scenic drive past quaint towns and coffee farms. Pebble Beach is a tiny walk from our door. It is a private community, small black pebble beach that offers hiking trail access, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and diving access. We are also close to Ho'okeena Beach, Pu-uhonua o Honaunau (aka Place of Refuge) and fantastic Two Steps (Snorkeling), The Painted Church, and Kealakekua Bay (Capt Cook Monument). Volcano National Park is 70 miles to the south with great hiking and views.
You will love it here. Come enjoy the paradise!

We have always enjoyed Hawaii and fell in love with the Big Island. We especially enjoy the Kona Paradise neighborhood because it is safe, quiet and friendly and one of very few residential areas that has easy access to the beach and coastline. It is located in a beautiful, lush (but not rainy) area of the island near many coffee farms. Our home has excellent proximity to the ocean. You can hear the whales at night and in the morning the birds chirp and your eyes are met with beautiful mountain and ocean views. It is so peaceful.
We love the quiet tropical location of Kona Paradise. It is close enough to a number of great attractions but away from the tourista of downtown Kona. We know you will love the tranquility of our beautiful home and the incredible ocean sounds and views.
I just wanted to send a quick thanks on our groups behalf for sharing your home with us this last week. The house was wonderful, the views were amazing and the beach was perfect (my personal favorite that we visited since you don't end up with sand covering everything!). We really appreciated all that the house had to offer and would certainly recommend your home to anyone visiting the island. Thanks again!
We enjoyed this house in Kona. The garage is not attached to the house and you have to walk up stairs to get into the house in case this is a concern. The house has a beautiful view of the ocean and is clean and has lots of windows. The trade winds were not blowing so the house did get warm, but there are overhead fans and extra fans in each room. We totally enjoyed our stay at this house.
House was easy to find. The road down was a bit of a roller coaster ride and was grateful for good brakes on our rental. Definitely one of the steepest roads I have ever been on. We arrived at 11 PM so we were not able to take in the view until the morning. It was a beautiful sight to wake up to. The beds were super comfortable and much appreciated after our long days playing. The house had everything we needed and we loved hanging out of the deck and drinking coffee. I miss the quiet already.
As for the pros: the view, the beds, out in the middle of no where, fun little beach right next to the house, friendly neighbors, and being in Hawaii :)
Only a couple of cons: foul smell coming up from the sink in the kitchen, fruit flies (we were able to take care of), BBQ was not cleaned (we were excited to cook fish this way), and non-stop beeping (I believe it was coming from the water tank...?).
I think if we went to the big island again we would probably stay closer to Kona. This is nothing against the rental. It was just what we wanted and provided all our needs. We just found some amazing beaches on our trip and most of them were up near the airport. With that being said, the captain cook trailhead, which is very close from this house was one of my favorite places - best snorkeling I have ever done and I was in the Caribbean last year.
Thanks for letting us stay!
We enjoyed our stay. The layout of the home was great and the view off the wrap around porch was incredible. It was awesome sitting on the porch for meals and overlooking the ocean. Just a heads up that there is no air conditioning which apparently is pretty normal in houses around this island????? There are a lot of fans around the house which helps but it was just a little sticky after long days at the beach. The house didn't smell very fresh upon check in too. I feel that needs to be addressed to enhance the experience of the stay. Also, it's not necessarily bad but the incline/decline of the road getting out and getting into the development is unreal. It WILL be the steepest road you've ever driven on. It was a fun part of the trip but just hold onto your socks and make sure your rental car's brakes are working. Thank you again for a great place to stay on such a cool island.
We truly enjoyed the view of the ocean and the sound of the surf every day we were there. Watching the surf shoot into the air as it crashed in the shore was endlessly fascinating to me. The house is very nice, well equipped and the owner was extremely helpful to us with everything especially as we had a 1 1/2 year old with us. She helped us out with a sleep and play for the little one. You are out a bit, but we didn't miss the hustle or urban life at all. The plantings around the area are wonderful. Hiking up and down the shore through the lava fields was very different from the usual. As we have a lot of coffee fans, the local Kona farms were a must see for us. This was our second visit to this area and we love it.
We awoke our first morning, walked down to the beach and just started walking south. It was a high surf day and unbelievably cool to be walking along the rugged Hawaiian lava coast with ocean spray. Truly paradise! I love being in Hawaii without the tourist crowds. This is perfect. We did things on the south end including the Volcano, captain cook and place of Refuge. If you love this tourist escape don't miss Manani Beach Park. It's priceless But staying here is the best. Stay as long as you can to get on Island Time.
We enjoyed staying at this home over our "spring break" vacation. Sharyl (owner) was very easy to work with, responded quickly to all our questions. The home was "as advertised" here on VRBO. It did not disappoint. We found the house to be clean and well stocked with the basics. It's a vacation home, not a luxury home. Just what our family desired as a base to come back to after adventuring on the island. I read all the reviews on a great many homes here on VRBO then settled on this one. If you read all the other reviews for "your place of refuge" you may see a few negative comments but I did not experience anything negative. The home was clean. Linens were clean. Appliances worked well. The laundry facility was especially appreciated! The pantry had basics that we were free to use. Paper products were available. Some beach toys, snorkels, beach towels, umbrellas, coolers, etc were available for our use and appreciated! The surf at the private beach changes each day. The first day we arrived it was very intimidating leading me to think there was no way we would swim there. That same day we enjoyed a walk along the coast trail and found many wonderful views and at least one additional beach/swimming area to the north of the house. There were campers there so we did not do anything more than admire the views. On our last day there we went back to the beach and trail. The surf was totally different and would have made a great place to swim. I was sad that we had not made time in our schedule just to stay at the house and enjoy more activities there at the beach as it looked like there was just as good snorkeling there as further up the coast. The drive down the hill was a little intimidating for me (50 yr. old timid driver) but my husband and 16 year old daughter never blinked or considered it a challenge. Yes, as Sharyl explains - small black ants can be an issue in any tropical home. (We once owned a beach house in South Carolina. If you don't clean up the food crumbs (especially sugar) you will get ants.) So, clean up your food crumbs and there will not be a problem. The location was great for touring just about any location on the island. Roughly an hour commute to the airport, picturesque drive to see all the southern destinations and then around to the volcanoes.
We used the book/phone app "The Big Island Revealed" and found many fun, out of the way destinations and good reviews to determine if the opportunity was right for us. Enjoy!
Relax, watch the whales and dolphins, listen and see the peaceful ocean swells from our lanai and home.
