About Keith Buck

We built the original 'Southern Comfort' in Helen in 2001, modeling it after our Rocky Mountain Ranch. With our 15 years of wonderful guests and 5 star ratings, we incorporated recommendations into the original Cabin overlooking the Helen Valley. This year, we finished the Southern Comfort Lodge, incorporating all our guest custom lodge recommendations built into a brand new property. We offer the 3 bedroom Southern Comfort Chalet and 5 bedroom Southern Comfort Lodge to accommodate the unique space requirements of our guests.

Keith Buck purchased this lodge in 2015

Why Keith Buck chose North Georgia Mountains

When we chose the original Southern Comfort location, we hiked the mountains around Helen to find the best site. For the new Southern Comfort Lodge, we reviewed all sites within a 5 mile radius of Helen to locate the most spectacular view in the North Georgia Mountains. We found a site with mountaintop views in all directions, no longer allowed for new construction and only possessed by a handful in North Georgia.

With a unique 360 degree site line, there is no room without an inspiring view of the Uniquoi forest and surrounding mountains. During construction, we 'discovered' Sautee Nacochee vineyards, shops, local food stores and attractions within a couple miles of the cabin and have grown to love this area.

Our goal was to bring man closer to God through the appreciation of his majesty. We combined the inspiring external views with built in craftsmanship, to demonstrate combined beauty of creation in wood, tile and stone.

What makes this lodge unique

Each room has a spectacular view and built in features that provide the opportunity for rest and contemplation of God's creation. Our goal is to leave each guest relaxed and pleased with the world around them.

Peaceful mountain getaway

  • 5 of 5

Loved this cabin... 12 beds, 4 couch pullouts if necessary. We did not max out occupancy so we did not use couches. Beds are comfy. 3 levels so lots of privacy. Bedrooms are nice size, and living area is spacious as well. Large table and island seating to accommodate crowd. Nice clean hot tub. The outdoor decks are the highlight- views and breezes are spectacular since you are at top of mountain! If you are looking for privacy and a beautiful view, look no further.

Owner's Response: This guest was marvelous with checkout, maintenance ideas and sharing what they liked about the property. Capacity is 16 to avoid lines at the bathrooms, but we intentionally provide lots of room, privacy and sleeping options for our guests in spacious accommodations. We look forward to your return! Fabulous Helen GA Reunion

  • 5 of 5

I was able to have my entire family stay and experience the area. With teenagers in tow, there was plenty of privacy and bathroom space. We had great weather, and were able to do all the activities we planned. We went to Unicoi State Park, up to Anna ruby falls, and did the hike to Tallulah Gorge and the suspension bridge. We also toured the city of Helen. Grandkids did the tubing, and part of family did whitewater rafting.

We were fortunate to see a brown bear on our last morning and hot air ballooons overhead. It was a super experience.

Views are amazing!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the views at this cabin on BOTH sides of the house. Some things in the house seemed not quite finished (i.e. trim pieces missing and some of the doors stick), but it's still a good place to stay. The photos make it look a little more updated than it actually is. The views and capacity definitely made it worth it for the money though.

Some notes:

-Not handicap accessible because there is no bathroom on the bottom floor (which says it's a handicap accessible floor.)

-There are not curtains/blinds on all of the windows downstairs, especially the bunk room. Little privacy on the bottom floor and no blinds on the bathroom window on the second floor.

- Very bright sun comes in the living room with the large windows that are not tinted and don't have curtains.

- Hot tub is great.

- Easy parking and easy to get to the house.

- Nice startup amenities

- The bunk beds do not have mattresses, they are futons.

- There is only one key for all of the doors, some of which have to be unlocked with the key from the inside which presents a fire hazard.

Overall a great place to stay, just wanted to note these things for future guests. We would stay here again!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay, the hot tub and the views! We update the property each week, adding an azalea, rose and much your week. We were selected the top north Georgia cabin by Cabella's catalog this month for their spring photo shoot and will continue to update, including the requested bedroom curtain. We looked for the sticky door and missing trim noted (easy fixes), but haven't located them yet. We are not handicap accessible, which would require both handrails and ramps, as well as the bathroom for the lower floor. Where the lower floor has two small steps for access, the second floor also has ground level access with three steps as well as a walkin shower in the master suite, and may be a better fit for those less mobile! My father in law negotiates both easily with bad hips and two canes. Given many guests in the over 60 crowd like me, we simplified access, but fall short of wheel chair capable. There are blinds and curtains on bedroom windows, but not in entertainment and great rooms to appreciate the spectacular views. I'll curtain the crews quarters opening to the entertainment room to reduce the sun, which sounded like a good addition. Reflective bathroom windows are also spectacular, chest high on floors 16 feet above the ground, looking out on mountains 50 miles away with no neighbors. Windows are argon filled, reflective and bronze tinted, with the outside reflected sky seen on our web site pictures. Lower bunk beds are convertible futons with mattresses, kept in the sleeping position. Upper bunk beds are not futon sofas, as an upper bunk sofa would have a big step, and also have futon mattresses. We avoid any known fire hazards, walking the property with the building inspector, who found none. One reason is each door key is on a hook next to the door. Additionally, each locked door has an additional exit door in the same open ground floor room within 10 feet, with keyless opening. Thirdly, each locked door has redundant multiple adjoining windows, opening to the ground floor. I also appreciated your comments on the large capacity, easy parking, easy to get to location and most importantly that you would return as many of our guests have done! Guest comments keep us at the top of Georgia vacation rental ratings and we greatly appreciate the time and feedback you provided for us and our future guests.

Roomy and pretty views

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is great and I would stay here again. However, it would be nice to have more kitchen towels provided; pot holders, kitchen towels, trash liners.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your stay and feedback! We now provide at least two kitchen towels and four potholders, rather than the one and two provided for your arrival. We feel our 34 trash bags starter supply provided is sufficient, (4 garbage, 6 kitchen and 20 wastebasket) and recommend guests planning meals on-site pack additional kitchen bags, as these tend to be the first to run out.
