Great location but challenges made it less than a perfect stay.

  • 3 of 5

First the great things: The house is beautiful in a great location. The front porch and grounds were wonderful. We sat and listen to the birds every morning and we even had a visit from a couple of deer and hummingbirds. We really enjoyed listening to the sounds of the brook that runs past the house.

Now the challenges: The TVs in the home are old analog, tube TVs that have been adapted to receive digital over the air. That means two channels, one of which is a shopping channel. Forget bringing any devices (like a Chromecast or Firestick) that require HDMI. There's no connections to be found. You can bring your DVDs. There is player in the front room but plan to watch them on non-widescreen.

As for the kitchen, it did have the pots, pans and utensils we needed but several needed serious cleaning before we were comfortable using. The oven was another surprise. We arrived late and popped in a couple of frozen pizzas we bought coming in while we unpacked. Next thing we knew the kitchen was filled with smoke! We discovered that a prior guest had some sort of spill in the oven which caught fire. It burned off rather quickly but it did require opening all the windows to keep the smoke detectors from going off.

The next day we discovered a similar surprise in the gas grill. It caught fire when we pre-heated it as there was a lot of residue that wasn't cleaned up from prior uses. Fortunately, we had moved it out from the screened in porch before we lit it.

Of special note, none of the windows have any treatments, which isn’t a big privacy concern given the private, wooded location but don’t expect to sleep in past sunrise unless you bring a mask.

Lastly, we came home one evening to find that the DSL internet and the phones. We reached out to the “guest contact” Evoke Vacation Rentals had provided for us by both email and twice by phone but never received any reply or acknowledgement. After being without either for half a day we called the emergency number on the refrigerator. He was very nice and found out a truck pulled down a utility line by the post office in town. We can’t blame anyone for that but we were really disappointed by the lack of response from the guest contact.

Owner's Response: Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your trip! We have sent your feedback over to the homeowner so they can make updates to the property so future travelers will have a more comfortable stay! The homeowners regret your stay did not meet your expectations. We also apologize for not being able to get in touch with the Guest Contact during your trip. Apparently, your email was not received. Please be assured it would not have been ignored had it been received.” We understand your frustrations and have since spoken with the homeowner and updated the phone number we email to guests. The homeowner is also now aware of the kitchen and grill issues, this feedback will be passed along to the house cleaner. As for the technology, the house is listed as being slightly remote and does not state that USB devices can be used in the TVs. We greatly appreciate your feedback as we want to make sure travelers have the best vacation rental experience at this home. Thank you again for your constructive feedback and we hope to assist you again in booking a vacation rental that will exceed your expectations! Best, The Evolve Team

So Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

The home was beautiful and immaculate! It's obviously well cared for. The kitchen has everything you need. We had a great time with four adults and four children. Plenty of room for everyone and the beds were very comfortable. The only suggestion I would make is to possibly provide fire pit seating? If not possible, make a note to bring camp chairs. I would also suggest cutting a better path to the mountain stream. Those are two very minor minor complaints and had little impact on our enjoyment. The location was perfect for activities we had planned and we will definitely return. Thank you!

Terrific house close to Whiteface, Lake Placid and Other Attractions

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I schedule regular winter trips to Lake Placid so we can ski Whiteface and this was the first time we stayed in Wilmington. The house accommodated 3 families, including adults and kids. There was plenty of space and it offered all the amenities we needed. It was super clean and comfortable (including the beds!) The kids loved playing outside in the backyard and near the stream despite the cold weather. They were constantly going out there...the house is literally down the road from Whiteface so we were able to get there quickly in the mornings to start our day. Lake Placid is also "down the road" about 20 minutes. We didn't mind the short drive as we spent most of our time at the house or mountain. Over our 5-day stay, we visited LP only once. We had plans to go again but the entire village of LP lost power on Saturday and it didn't get restored until late morning Sunday. Luckily we didn't lose any power in Wilmington :) The only issue we had was with the two coffee makers...seemed some had trouble with it. But it could've been user error. If you need and love your coffee, you may want to bring your own machine or Keurig...overall we loved the house and will definitely stay here again. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Beautiful house with a fly problem

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Wilmington area for a wedding, and really wanted to love this home. It was absolutely beautiful, and rounded out our Adirondack experience. However, upon arriving at the house, and throughout the weekend, the fly problem inside truly detracted from our stay. On our first walk through the house, we found dead flies in the bathtub, toilet, sinks, window sills, and elsewhere, plus countless more alive and buzzing. More than just an annoyance, it prevented our group from sleeping with buzzing throughout the night, and instead of spending time catching up in the cozy living room when we arrived, we spent the evening attempting to swat as many as possible before going to bed. As another review mentions, there are subtle attempts to remedy this issue, like a fly catcher in the upstairs landing area, but if the owners are aware of the problem they should make a more earnest attempt to fix it. While the stay was 'good' overall, if we come back to the Adirondacks in the future we will look for another residence.

Owner's Response: We are sincerely sorry for the unfortunate experience you had with house flies during your stay in our home last weekend. We are aware of a problem with flies that particularly occurs in the fall about this time as the weather cools and flies seek the warmth inside. This summer, we engaged a pest control professional with whom with have a contract to handle these things while still being environmentally responsible. We will let the professional know that the problem persists. Be assured that we intend to remedy the situation and I hope you understand that it is not due to lack of cleanliness/sanitation in the home. We appreciate the positive rating you gave the home and your positive comments as well. Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention and we apologize for your discomfort during your stay. ~ The Homeowners

Beautiful house with all the amenities and a great location! 5 STARS!

  • 5 of 5

We were only able to stay for a short visit this time but hope to make this an annual family get a way and stay for the week next year. This house was clean, spacious & stunning. The listing was accurate, clean and well-maintained. I would definitely recommend this property to my friends. Very close to a popular cliff jumping spot where the children had a wonderful time jumping and swimming around the waterfall. Lots of sleeping areas for our children, comfortable beds. Gorgeous granite counter-tops in kitchen, kitchen fully stocked with everything one needs to prepare meals. A grill, a screened in porch, a pretty yard and a stream for the children to play in. Only about 20 min from downtown Lake Placid. We will definitely stay here again. The only issues we had, which were not big issues was that the wi-fi was very slow and at times did not work, which made it difficult for me to work from here, and we couldn't figure out how to turn on the televisions. Not necessarily a bad thing since it kept us off of our electronics and we were able to enjoy more family time. Also, would have loved to be able to bring our dog, but understand that most rentals do not allow pets. Thank you for a wonderful stay, five stars from us!
