Can you 4C Yourself at Sol y Mar? 3 + 3 POOL & 3 Terraces, Steps from the Surf!

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,250 sq. ft.
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Ground Floor 3 BR 3BA Condo with 2 Patios Focusing on Indoor/Outdoor Living.

Sol y Mar consists of 12 units - Four 3-story buildings of which two are beachfront. It is a beautiful structure described as contemporary Balinese architecture. The design and 'curb' appeal are quite stunning and very atypical for this part of the world. Please be sure to check out the floorplan for the property in the photo section. This condo has 3 bedrooms and 3 full baths, a fully equipped kitchen, ground floor location for easy access to pool and beach, and is perfect for indoor/outdoor cooking and entertaining. There are also many great (several beachfront) restaurants a short walk away. The condo, 4C, has a 'gourmet' kitchen complete with granite countertops and stainless appliances (fridge w/icemaker). For outdoor dining, a BBQ, sink, and fridge are just outside on a large patio with 2 ceiling fans (seating for 10) conveniently located through sliding doors off the interior dining area. Central air conditioning, SSL wi-fi, 4 TVs (Two 65", 50" and desktop), ceiling fans, a stackable washer/dryer are just some of the features of 4C that will make your stay here very comfortable. The sleeping configuration includes a MBR with king bed, a secondary 'lock-out' bedroom with a queen (each have attached bathrooms), a third bedroom with 2 twin beds, and the LR has a pull out queen size couch/bed. The 'lock-out' bedroom is termed such because it has its own entrance from the gated entry terrace. This bedroom also has a small fridge, coffeemaker, and microwave. Locals say that Sol y Mar is the safest place to stay on Playa Hermosa. Located right in the center of this beautiful beach and steps from the pool, the list of activities and things to do goes on and on!

Last point 4C has new paint, flooring, 3 wall-mount smart TVs, bathrooms with wet environment

Snorkeling and Diving – Several boats offer extensive snorkeling and diving experiences, half and full days. Most out of Coco Beach, just south, but will pick up at Playa Hermosa. There are no conventional docks close by, so you will wade out to the boat and back – just that you get your feet wet – YAY no cruise ships!

Fishing – Fishing within sight of the shore is called “offshore”, while more serious/expensive fishing is called “ocean” fishing and can range to twenty-five miles out. Ocean fishing gives you the chance,in theory, to catch larger fish. Incidentally you don’t get to keep “billfish” – marlin, sailfish, etc., they are turned loose after the pictures. You pay for “half-day” or “full-day”, and if going for deep water, it will take full day to get out, back. Half-day prices can range from $200 (locally hand-made fiberglass boat) to high end say $350 (professionally manufactured boat with all bells and whistles). The high-end boats seem to be a better investment, and highly recommend Roy Quiros and his boat Ch’aska out of Coco Beach ( There are several others of equally excellent value. The crew will automatically clean and offer the fish you catch to you. If you don’t want them, they will gladly take them. There are a couple sailboats offering day cruises out of Coco Beach. There are also several catamaran sunset/snorkel cruises.

A notebook near the entry spotlight tours, nearby hiking and biking, doctors, dentists, restaurants, massage services (on the beach) Rorysrides, a nearby tour service, etc.

During high season, the beach has all sorts of water activities available including parasailing, jetsking, beach massages, and there was once even a guy offering rides on his homemade ultralight. (Wow, was that fun!)

Places to Go

Rory Hoffman ( has several day trips, which might be of interest – the river, Rio Tempesque, the Casona (an old farm, the site of a famous historic battle), Rincon de Veijo mountain – sort of a small scale Yellowstone Park, and the Rio Corobici, a grade 2 (pretty tranquil) river rafting trip to see wildlife. The access to Palo Verde Park is just north of the Rio Corobici too, but it's a long drive. There are many canopy establishments nearby, too.

Hidden Garden Art Gallery – a true art gallery, claimed to be the largest in Guanacaste, and to my mind the equal of those in San Jose. It certainly has high quality work. Displays vary, however the work of some “resident” artists is there all the time. Carlos Hiller is internationally known for his paintings depicting sea life. They also stage Saturday crafts vendor fairs. See the current offerings and special events calendar at It is on the Airport Highway, five kilometers this side (west) of the airport. Watch for the large yellow advertising signs on the north side of the road.

Don’t miss the Farmer’s Market in Liberia on Fridays. It is three or four blocks north of the soccer field, a block or so north of the round-about – look for the crowd and all the cars parked along the road. With the new street signs, someone will have a more precise address. I usually turn left at the stop light on the Inter-American, go about four blocks north to the place where there is a building with blue structural steel supports and a yellow background, and turn right. The market area is a long six-eight blocks east…where the street forms a Y, bear left and find a place to park in the shade. The offerings are fresh, of overall excellent quality, and reasonably priced. We usually don’t even try to bargain for prices because they are rock-bottom already.

Missed the Farmer’s Market? "Peri" on the west side of Liberia, south side of the road, has an extraordinary selection of fruits and veggies as well as fresh fish. It is at the beginning of the block just before the intersection. Check out the Carlos Hiller mural on the east wall of the Peri!! There is also a US-styled AutoMercado with many stores and restaurants included located in downtown Playas del Coco. Most Gringos prefer this supermarket (the parking lot next to the taxi/bus stand) This supermarket is just like any up-scale grocery store in the US with A/C,and all the foods and amenities discriminating visitors like.

Starved for more US-style shopping centers – check out the one about a mile south of Liberia, multi-story, all under one roof. Right turn in off the Inter-American, there is additional parking around back if the front is full. Speaking of starving, you will never starve when McDonalds and Pizza Hut are nearby. The Liberia area seems to be adding more of these American 'fast food'places every year - for better or ??

Chorotega Pottery – made by the local Chorotega Indians, this world famous pottery is made by hand coiling, and does not use glazes, but rather a polished clay coating called tierra sigilita, in making the designs. Traditionally a matriarchal enterprise, the guys have jumped in now that there is money to be made. It is about an hour drive south to Santa Cruz, turn left at the south edge of town where the signs say “Guaitil” and “San Vicente”. Fifteen minutes to these villages – we suggest you go through Guaitil another mile or so to the bend-in-the-road blink of San Vicente. The Chorotega Museum is there (a pole barn) with interpretive material, which identifies the leading artisans in the area. There is also an extensive offering of mostly homogenous typical pottery. An artisan’s co-op building is a block west of the museum – if you are lucky they may be firing in the hemispherical kiln adjacent to the coop. Feel free to stop and see if anyone is working. They are pleased to have you stop by and will give impromptu demonstrations. Visit the individual studios nearby for the most variety and best prices. Several of the artisans are 'national living treasures”. Return to the numerous shops of Guaitil and the Coop Pottery Store there for a look at more stylized,semi-mass produced offerings. The jaguar pottery piece in 4C is from here. Further down the road from Santa Cruz and the Chorotegas is Rancho Humo. Rancho Humo features boat trips on the Rio Tempesque to Isla de Pajaros (Bird Island, an International Preserve and nesting location for numerous species). There are also jeep tours of their wetlands and conservation areas, so it can be a whole day tour. It takes at least two hours to get there because about twenty miles is unpaved gravel roads (although they claim 90 minutes from the airport!). This is a new enterprise, watch for the small “arrow” signs along the road beginning at Santa Cruz, turn right into the country at the intersection of the main road with the access to the town of Nicoya. Check out their website at I’m sure they would appreciate a call to schedule. Palo Verde, the renowned wildlife sanctuary and natural area is just across the river.

Souvenir shops – while most tourist-oriented sites have accompanying souvenir shops, there are two large “free-standing” souvenir shops on the Airport Highway a mile or two past the bridge over the Rio Tempesque. They are about half a mile or so apart and the one furthest to the east has the most display space – prices are a little better here also. Many restaurants walking distance from Sol y Mar - on the beach and near the beach on the two entry roads from the Main Highway.

U.S. currency is accepted almost everywhere, but there is an ATM for both dollars and colones in the Hermosa Heights parking lot across from the movie theater and SandBar (a new sportsbar). If you're lucky you'll see rays, birds, monkeys and iguanas!

About Sol y Mar

It makes me happy when I hear that others have enjoyed Costa Rica!

Why Sol y Mar chose Guanacaste

You could book The Four Seasons just across the bay on Papagayo Penninsula for about $700. a night + all your other expenses. This entire area is beautiful but at Four Seasons, you might never leave the property. There's nothing to walk to for a taste of why you're there?... How do you get a feel for the culture if you don't wander beyond a hotel's boundaries? With Sol y Mar, you have options to cook in, or cook out on your patio. You can stay nearby on your own patio, watch Netflix, have great WiFi access and swim in the three tiered pool.... or lounge in the Jacuzzi (not heated). You have the same Four Seasons quality porcelain and ceramic flooring and granite countertops, stainless appliances, and central air, punchy newly painted rooms, two huge UltraHD LED TVs and you're walking distance to two quaint little grocery stores, multiple restaurants, and trails winding through the surrounding rainforest. Yes, the Howler monkeys can be a bit noisy in the morning, but certainly less obnoxious than your next door dog at home. The new Liberia International Airport terminal is just a scenic 20 minute drive and the new CIMA hospital facility is on your right just before you get to airport road.

In my experience, I have never seen any newer Beach condos like these on the Pacific side. People are constantly walking up to Sol y Mar's gate from their stroll on the beach to ask 'How can we find out how to stay here?' Well, you just found out. Check out this link for the location:,-85.6048342,12z

What makes this condo unique

The unique benefits in Playa Hermosa include so many different things. Sol y Mar is a gem in the rough, and that can easily be seen by flipping through the photos. Playa Hermosa and the Costa Rica experience (called Pura Vida by locals) is to why I sing Costa Rica's praises. Pura Vida is the Costa Rican phrase Ticos seem to use for almost everything. For example, in Costa Rica when someone asks you, “¿Cómo estás?” you can respond “Pura vida!” Or even, “How is the food?” Answer: “Pura vida.” It’s used as a greeting, a farewell and a thousand other things. Yes, it literally translates as “pure life,” but in Costa Rica it is used to means something close to “full of life.” 'Pura Vida' typifies benefits you can gain only by visiting this wonderful place. For foreigners, Sol y Mar is welcoming and familiar. Many of 'our' luxuries are integrated into 4C, so the culture shock of a strange place is more awesome than uncomfortable. Unless you venture out into the countryside, most locals love to use their English. Of course, it helps if you try a bit of Spanish -- as we are guests! There's something for everyone.. Just quickly I'll review the cool things that most visitors read about long before their first visit: Costa Rica is the result of complex volcanic activity that took place some 75 million years ago and still continues today. Visit the volcanoes and mud baths!

Leatherback Turtles can be seen nesting on occasion nearby. Check out Playa Grande on one of Rory's tours!

The animals, oh the wonderful animals!! Bad boy capuchins (white face monkeys), howler monkeys, multiple iguana species (roaming around our great beach tree around 9:00), scarlet macaws, herons, toucans, sloths, poison dart frogs, kiskadees that play in our pool ..... They will all give you a warm welcome to a place that you will never forget. The uniqueness to Sol y Mar reaches far beyond this property. Not to be missed is the friendly, positive attitude of all the locals and ex-pats

Directions are tricky as there are few street names and no addresses. However, surrounding areas are growing like crazy! Who knows how much more developed it will soon be!!

A new airport terminal and VIP lounge were recently added. Where Guanacaste's (the province name) only stoplight was, is now in the process of having a huge overpass built with on and off ramps for the Pan-American highway. This will make the traffic on the corner of the Pan-American Highway and Airport Road much better! A newly added stoplight was installed on 'Airport Rd.' near Do It Center. A new gas station has been built next to Do It Center, and CIMA, an internationally acclaimed medical clinic just opened behind Do It Center right before the road leading to the Playa Hermosa cut-off and to Papaguyo Penninsula/Four Seasons. There is now a sign for the street leading to the beach and the road (left) to Sol y Mar. The google map location used for listing 3879367 on Google Maps is accurate for finding Sol y Mar:,-85.6048342,12z Please print out directions to use after you get your rental car or to hand to the taxi driver at the airport. Since Sol y Mar is only a few years old, and there are only 12 units, most of the locals won't know its location. (Locals may know the location of Aqua Sport, a beachfront restaurant just a few structures north of Sol y Mar) 4C (SyM) is only about 24 min From LIR (Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport).

Here are step by step directions from LIR to Sol y Mar (approximately 23.2 km, 24 minutes)

Exit the airport. After the carved stone ball (petrosphere) turn right on Route 21 (Airport Road). Continue for several miles, passing Hilton Garden Inn, Solarium, Hidden Garden and a German Bakery. You'll pass through the only Guanacaste stoplight - which was added for a school zone near Do It Center. Nearing your turn, you'll cross what was the 'Taiwan Friendship Bridge, but was renamed 'The Friendship Bridge' (In 2007 then-President Oscar Arias cut ties with Taiwan to forge diplomatic relations with China.)

Turn right at the intersection before Do It Center. (If you pass the new gas station, you have gone too far) After a few hundred feet (just past CIMA) there are several signs (Green signs typical to U.S.) Google maps calls the left turn Route 254 but at the stop it just says Playa Panama/Playa Hermosa Turn Left... (DO NOT GO STRAIGHT or you will end up at The Four Seasons) Stay on 254 until the bottom of the hill. There are KM markers along 254 (aka Truncas Rd.) but not much else. When you reach the T at the bottom of the hill, you will see a monument displaying 'El Mangroove' which is a small new resort. TURN LEFT. Pass by Rumba's Beach Club at Playa Panama (on the right in 1.5 km)

The road then turns left and becomes Route 159 or 'The Main Road' You will follow 159 until you see Entrada Segunda (after Villas Sol - Condovac Gate)

Turn right on Entrada Segunda. El Velero is advertised on a sign at this intersection. Take the only left before the beach. Follow this road past Aqua Sport to the last guard gate (white booth) near the end on the right. You'll see the Sol y Mar sign. The guards will ask for identification before opening the wrought iron gate.

There is SSL Wi-Fi and 3 'smart TVs' for watching Netflix and other Internet sourced video. A three-tiered pool and a Jacuzzi are just out the door. The pool is only a few steps from 4C, but there are outdoor showers, a changing room by the pool, as well as a foot shower as you enter the pool area. Consistent use will help keep sand out of the pool and condo. I am quite impressed by the mosaic stonework that is typical in Costa Rica pools. The shallow tier of the pool is perfect for relaxing and gazing out toward the beautiful Pacific. The beach path is convenient for walking left to Bosque del Mar for dinner, or right to several other great beachfront restaurants. Beach chairs, towels, and float toys are on the 4C patio. Floating in our gentle waters is very relaxing, as is sitting in a comfy chair watching the sunset with the waves nudging your toes. Scuba diving, snorkeling, & fishing are located along the mile long beach. There is an ATM in the nearby Hermosa Heights complex.

Immaculate condo right on the beach.

A total of seven family members and friends stayed six nights at Sol y Mar 4C in March, 2017.

Because we arrived late at night, it was a little difficult to locate, but that was our only issue with the place. It was spotless and spacious with modern conveniences. The TV and WiFi services worked very well, and we were able to get NCAA March Madness broadcasts on ESPN3.

The property manager is Grethel, and she is friendly, helpful, and professional.

From the front door of the flat to the beach is approximately sixty meters.

Excellent location with several good restaurants within easy walking distance.

Perfect weather during our stay.

Property security is top-notch.

Communications with the owner were effective and friendly. She answered all of our questions, and checked with us during the stay to make sure we were taken care of.

Will gladly stay here again if we return to this area. (Actually, my wife is already talking about coming back when we can stay two weeks.)

Perfect location/Excellent Condo!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (3 teen/preteenagers) were thrilled to stay at here! The photos do not do justice - the building/pool/proximity on beach are EXCELLENT!

We loved having a full functioning kitchen, 3 full baths, laundry, cable/netflix, AND WIFI - those amenities made our 'down time' comfortable after long days of adventure tours. The pool is lovely with ample shade/sun and chairs for all. Just a few steps away is the ocean for boogie boarding and skimboarding - both apparatuses available at the condo ... along with pool toys, etc. Kids threw frisbee/football/baseball on the beach every day. This condo is set in a quiet beach town - not much of a night life, but an excellent location from the airport, to adventure tours, to other beach/surfing towns.

We walked to several restaurants and to the small grocery store in town. (NOTE: we did go to the larger grocery store in Playa Coco for an initial shopping, but found many things we needed in the small grocery store in Playa Hermosa). We did not rent a vehicle, so we were on foot for dinner and grocery goods. Here is a quick review on the restaurants we visited that are either on the beach or within walking distance in town:

AquaSport: Food NOT good, great sunsets, good live music (Sat night), nice bonfire, sand volleyball net - we rented stand up paddle boards here

Hotel El Velero: EXCELLENT Tuesday Taco night!! (note - ONLY tacos on Tuesday - no other menu items)

Roberto's: Good food - WAY overpriced - would not pay again to eat there!!!

Ginger: EXCELLENT food - not more than a 12 min walk asian/tapas - kids loved it!

Restaurant Villa Acacia: Ordered Pizza to take home - easy walk under 10 min - Good Pizza!

La Casita Del Marisco: we did not eat here, but heard from our tour guide that the food was excellent!

Pescado Loco Bar: we also did not eat here, but wish we would have

Thank you to Carol the owner and Zindis the management group - both were immediate with responses and so helpful! I would absolutely recommend staying at this condo!!

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the sol y mar, the place was perfect for our needs. We had two couples and having two separate bedrooms worked out well. The place was set up nicely with wifi, Netflix, etc. The only thing we didn't like was this specific unit does not get any sun so it is a little dark being on the first floor.

incredible trip to playa hermosa

  • 5 of 5

Sol y Mar 4c ended up being one of the primary factors for our incredible trip to Playa Hermosa. First off I can't say enough about the owner of this property. Carol was super easy to work with and she went out of her way to keep us in the loop on pretty much everything related to our rental experience.

Her unit is exactly as advertised. Very clean and well appointed...had everything we needed. Close proximity to pool and beach. Location is best on Playa Hermosa beach. Sunsets are some of the best we've experienced. Playa Hermosa beach was better that anticipated - great beach bars/restaurants and the sand is so soft. Listening to the water gently hit the beach was soothing.

We used the pool almost every day. Pool was very clean and kept at the perfect temperature. Views from the pool area are superb. Unit had a cooler so we had plenty of beverages out at the pool.

Complex has 12 total units and is gated with 24 hour security. Complex also had a gardener working around the clock making sure everything looked great. The grounds at the complex are my opinion the most well kept on the whole beach.

Carol (unit owner) uses a property management company to help with check-in/check-out as well as assist with anything while you're renting the unit. Wes and Linda from Zindis Group were great to work with. They made everything easy and gave us some great intel on beach and excursions. They do a great job managing the unit for Carol while she's away.

We will definitely go back and will rent Carol's unit again. We've rented other units (in USA) through HomeAway/VBRO and have had great experiences with all all rentals but I will say our experience with Carol is best to date!

Beautiful property, beautiful beach

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved our stay at Sol y Mar. We were two grandparents, two parents and three boys.

I had wanted a place that was a short ride from the Liberia airport, on a family friendly beach, with a pool, at a reasonable price. Everything was better than expected. The property was beautiful with greenery, flowers, arches, tiled passageways. It is just steps to the pool and the beach, gated and secure. The pool area is charming and our six year old grandson became deep water safe in minutes. The pool also satisfied our ten and twelve year olds. Older teens will enjoy the ocean. Sometimes we had the pool to ourselves, sometimes up to four families were sharing which was no problem. The view of the beach, sailboats, ocean, sunsets is lovely. The beach is mixed black and gold sand. This is not a surfing beach, but sometimes the waves were crashing. Usually it was just enough to be fun for our older boys and often it was calm enough for the older people and young one.

The condo itself was spacious, lovely and exceptionally well equipped. The air conditioning was faultless. There is a separate self-contained master bedroom/bathroom with coffee making facilities and a mini-fridge which we grandparents gratefully took. In the condo itself, we especially appreciated the washer/dryer, the comfortable furniture and the two patios. The patios give a feeling of being outside among the trees, ground cover and foliage. The larger patio is an outdoor kitchen/dining room with a grill, sink, mini-fridge and dining tables for 8. The grill is a little tricky to light, ask for instructions.

It was 100 while we were there which limited our driving around to visit other beaches. We took beach walks in the early morning and enjoyed the cool of the ocean, pool and shade during the day. As a beach resort, prices for groceries and meals were high, equal to U.S. beach prices. Grocery prices lower in Liberia. Roads to National Parks are terrible. 4 wheel drive might help. We loved our trip up to Monteverde but the roads killed us. Roads to Arenal are better. Ask on the beach for boats to take you fishing and snorkeling. Reasonably priced. Can bargain to $150-$200 for 2-3 hours. Bring lots of $1 for tips and to buy coconuts with straws from a man who brings them to the gate for $2. Lots of good restaurants, Ginger has tapas. didn't like Aquasport. All are pricey. Fresh seviche good everywhere. Watch out for beer served with ice!

Owner's Response: I always feel so happy when guests enjoy Playa Hermosa as I do!! THANK YOU for your wonderful remarks! We just added a 65" 4K TV to the living room and put the 55" in the master. Secured, fast Internet is also expensive (like US beach communities) in Costa Rica, but 4Cs was just upgraded to the best Cabletica offers. Hope you'll be back to enjoy SyM again soon!!
