About John Cappelano

I am an eclectic individual who loves the contradictions that make life interesting. I have reached the middle of my life, living in Macon, GA but the son of a Mayflower Mom and a first generation Italian dad. I love the arts, painting, music, writing but I have made most of my money over the years on Wall Street. I haven't made that much though because I have chosen to be honest in a game that doesn't pay the honest very well. I love old houses and new cars. I believe in tradition though I am totally iconoclastic. I love to travel but I could be totally happy never having to leave Harwood Cottage again. I am a hometown boy who finds himself traveling over 3,000 miles for work, frequently. I am a Cancer (zodiac wise only). I am single. I am over 50. I am nostalgic.

John Cappelano purchased this house in 2006

Why John Cappelano chose Southern Georgia

This property was chosen by my parents many years ago as their ideal place to retire. It was found by chance on a historic homes at Christmas tour in the Macon Historic District. The house became loved by both of them because of its first floor suite with private full bath and the Music Library which could be used as an extension of that suite. They loved the many sets of pocket doors and access between rooms on every floor allowing for an endless configuration of open or semi-open floor plans. The old back porch allows for access to the kitchen just steps from the William Suite (their first floor suite), bedroom. Though they didn't have much money, they did their best to honor their favorite Southern writers and the literary history of the people of Macon. My dad passed a few years ago and several months ago, my Mom joined him. My nephew and I are currently restoring the home back to the glory of my folks early retirement and then some. Our guests have even helped us with ideas on projects like the secret garden and the Chinese Dining Room. Each week, something new is completed and it's all because if people like you! All in all, the house is very ingenious given the 1920's era when it was imagined. Come visit and live the life of a Southern Novelist of The Jazz Era with all its quiet romance, boisterous bravado and faded hints of tawdriness.

Just What We Wanted

We were in town for our daughter's wedding and wanted to spend time with family the week before the ceremony. This worked great. Could not have asked for anything better.

Owner's Response: You know, as owners we seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on less than stellar reviews, often forced to play James Carville on Fox News, basically tasked with swatting down each sideways glance that is cast upon us. We become highly charged in the defense of a sterling reputation. While we could not be more pleased with this guest's review, we wanted to focus on them as we would on a poor review because this family was so much more worth it. This is where I bear witness to the truth which is, this guest couple and their family are hands down the finest large group we have ever had the honor to host. They were the cleanest, smartest, most thoughtful, self-sufficient, pleasant, appreciative, kindest family we've ever had in residence. I was left dumbfounded by the dichotomy between this family and one or two of the others by way of comparison. Blanche Harwood, for whom the Ha rwood Cottage is named, used to say, "There is a spirit in this place. When good people come here it becomes like Heaven but there are a few monsters out there who can at times, make this place something far less. Well, she was right and we thank this guest for the slice of heaven they brought to Macon. Many happy returns! J

What a gorgeous home! So much room and beyond beautiful...but still homey. We had family stay for a wedding at the nearby Library Ballroom. Perfect spot! Lots of bedrooms and plenty of room to spread out. The owner, John was great to deal with. Be sure to get the historic tour of the home. John is as knowledgeable as any paid tour guide I've ever listened to. Coffee and breakfast treats provided. Could not ask for a better experience.

Annual Women's Weekend Trip - 2016

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

Each year the women in my family get together for a weekend to catch up and enjoy a bit of down time. This year we chose Macon, Georgia for its history, to visit the sites of one our favorite bands (The Allman Brothers), and to visit the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. Finding this wonderful home for our large group in one of Macon's historic areas was a perfect location. We very much enjoyed our time at Harwood Cottage and would book here again. The house was clean and well-maintained and I have already recommended this property to a friend. John was very helpful in accommodating the needs of this large group. He discovered a problem with the hot tub and had it repaired and the area set up for us to use very quickly. He was very responsive to our needs and requests. His wealth of knowledge about this area of Georgia, a great family story associated with this house, and his gracious manner made this trip special for us all. We take away some great memories and that is what our annual trip is really about.

Wonderful stay - truly felt like we were staying with family

We recently stayed at The Harwood Cottage for our daughter’s wedding. We rented the entire house so all grandparents would have a place to stay together. We are SO glad we rented this property. John is a wonderful host and the home has so much character and charm. Of course, John has just as much character and charm as the home. He went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful – we truly felt like we were staying with family. We would highly recommend this property and since our daughter is living in Macon now, we hope to come back to stay again.

My family and myself had a wonderful time during our stay at harwood cottage. The history and art housed inside the walls lends itself to a most pleasurable experience to be enjoyed by anyone that visits.

While we enjoyed our stay, we definetly tried the patience of John, our host. My group included 3 children ranging in age from 2-8. We managed to break a vase and consume his Christmas gift being stored in the refrigerator freezer. Even after these actions he has welcomed us back. That alone should give you an idea of the welcome and hospitality you can expect to receive from your host when visiting The Harwood Cottage.

Thank you for allowing my family to enjoy your home and the warm welcome we received. Laurie

Owner's Response: Laurie, You are sweet and you and your family were a joy to host. We did not hear the childrenat all when we were in the laundry drying and folding those warm towels and those children were angels! Why did you think we went out to get them popsicles? You are an angel to have restored that frozen Christmas present and old vase. Of course we'd want you back. Seasons may come and seasons may go...just'll always have a place here, in the heart of Georgia! Our best to you and yours for a happy, blessed and productive new year! John C. This property is not your traditional VRBO since the owner stays onsite. It is more comparable to an Airbnb type property. We enjoyed our stay, but the property needs some finishing touches to really make it a place we would stay again. Several of the beds are air mattress, and the sheets and towels are more frat house quality than what you may expect from a property of this type. It is a great location, but the street noise is constant. The property doesn't have cable or access to local live tv channels. It may be perfect for some travels, but it didn't meet our expectations. We rent through VRBO often, and this was our least favorite property. John tries hard to make it enjoyable, but it just misses on several key points.

Owner's Response: You left out you made the booking contingent upon a 2 hour site inspection in which your mother assigned tasks costing over $500. They were later dismissed as unneeded, leaving us with the bill. VRBO says there are no 'traditional' listings & lots of owners stay. You had the option and asked us to. You omit the private entrance, limited access and on site services you enjoyed to light fires, improve internet access, instruct on tv use, airplay a football game and fetch a late night bag of ice. You mislead the reader. You focus on two airbeds rarely used in an overflow dormitory when each couple had their choice of five traditional King, Queen or Full Beds. Your phrase "this type of property" infers upscale but we are not the Ritz Carlton. Their nightly rate for the same 8 person cottage is 7X our nightly rate. Our linen is all either 100% Egyptian Cotton or 60% Cotton Poly Blend. Max thread: 900 Min thread: 300. Max age: 12 mos. You slept on Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley. Our towels are 100% cotton and less than a year old. We avoid double plush 'bath sheets' because they are environmentally unkind. We have found many fraternities with great towels, to which were you referring? You slept less than 6ft. from a closet filled with various high quality linens and towels. It was shown to you on the walk through. You had alternatives. The house is on a grand boulevard. There is traffic that is where they build these mansions. Why not just move to an empty rear bedroom? You declined an offer to connect the cable channels. We told you we could 'Airplay' just about anything with 30 minutes notice. You waited until there were 8 minutes left in the Stanford game to make the request. You admitted we tried but we wish you had. It is a rare hospitality to offer your home & best tableware to 24 strangers who need a place to celebrate Thanksgiving together while obviously sacrificing your own. To repay that with insincere satisfaction followed by an off handed review when it's too late to do anything is much, less than gracious. A poor review with no chance to address issues, can only be seen as malicious. Criticism without the ability to build from it, is in no way constructive. Not since the natives were repaid by English muskets at Plymouth, has a host experienced such poor treatment from a Thanksgiving guest.
