I am an eclectic individual who loves the contradictions that make life interesting. I have reached the middle of my life, living in Macon, GA but the son of a Mayflower Mom and a first generation Italian dad. I love the arts, painting, music, writing but I have made most of my money over the years on Wall Street. I haven't made that much though because I have chosen to be honest in a game that doesn't pay the honest very well. I love old houses and new cars. I believe in tradition though I am totally iconoclastic. I love to travel but I could be totally happy never having to leave Harwood Cottage again. I am a hometown boy who finds himself traveling over 3,000 miles for work, frequently. I am a Cancer (zodiac wise only). I am single. I am over 50. I am nostalgic.
John Cappelano purchased this house in 2006
This property was chosen by my parents many years ago as their ideal place to retire. It was found by chance on a historic homes at Christmas tour in the Macon Historic District. The house became loved by both of them because of its first floor suite with private full bath and the Music Library which could be used as an extension of that suite. They loved the many sets of pocket doors and access between rooms on every floor allowing for an endless configuration of open or semi-open floor plans. The old back porch allows for access to the kitchen just steps from the William Suite (their first floor suite), bedroom. Though they didn't have much money, they did their best to honor their favorite Southern writers and the literary history of the people of Macon. My dad passed a few years ago and several months ago, my Mom joined him. My nephew and I are currently restoring the home back to the glory of my folks early retirement and then some. Our guests have even helped us with ideas on projects like the secret garden and the Chinese Dining Room. Each week, something new is completed and it's all because if people like you! All in all, the house is very ingenious given the 1920's era when it was imagined. Come visit and live the life of a Southern Novelist of The Jazz Era with all its quiet romance, boisterous bravado and faded hints of tawdriness.

What a gorgeous home! So much room and beyond beautiful...but still homey. We had family stay for a wedding at the nearby Library Ballroom. Perfect spot! Lots of bedrooms and plenty of room to spread out. The owner, John was great to deal with. Be sure to get the historic tour of the home. John is as knowledgeable as any paid tour guide I've ever listened to. Coffee and breakfast treats provided. Could not ask for a better experience.
Each year the women in my family get together for a weekend to catch up and enjoy a bit of down time. This year we chose Macon, Georgia for its history, to visit the sites of one our favorite bands (The Allman Brothers), and to visit the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. Finding this wonderful home for our large group in one of Macon's historic areas was a perfect location. We very much enjoyed our time at Harwood Cottage and would book here again. The house was clean and well-maintained and I have already recommended this property to a friend. John was very helpful in accommodating the needs of this large group. He discovered a problem with the hot tub and had it repaired and the area set up for us to use very quickly. He was very responsive to our needs and requests. His wealth of knowledge about this area of Georgia, a great family story associated with this house, and his gracious manner made this trip special for us all. We take away some great memories and that is what our annual trip is really about.
We recently stayed at The Harwood Cottage for our daughter’s wedding. We rented the entire house so all grandparents would have a place to stay together. We are SO glad we rented this property. John is a wonderful host and the home has so much character and charm. Of course, John has just as much character and charm as the home. He went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful – we truly felt like we were staying with family. We would highly recommend this property and since our daughter is living in Macon now, we hope to come back to stay again.
My family and myself had a wonderful time during our stay at harwood cottage. The history and art housed inside the walls lends itself to a most pleasurable experience to be enjoyed by anyone that visits.
While we enjoyed our stay, we definetly tried the patience of John, our host. My group included 3 children ranging in age from 2-8. We managed to break a vase and consume his Christmas gift being stored in the refrigerator freezer. Even after these actions he has welcomed us back. That alone should give you an idea of the welcome and hospitality you can expect to receive from your host when visiting The Harwood Cottage.
Thank you for allowing my family to enjoy your home and the warm welcome we received. Laurie
This property is not your traditional VRBO since the owner stays onsite. It is more comparable to an Airbnb type property. We enjoyed our stay, but the property needs some finishing touches to really make it a place we would stay again. Several of the beds are air mattress, and the sheets and towels are more frat house quality than what you may expect from a property of this type. It is a great location, but the street noise is constant. The property doesn't have cable or access to local live tv channels. It may be perfect for some travels, but it didn't meet our expectations. We rent through VRBO often, and this was our least favorite property. John tries hard to make it enjoyable, but it just misses on several key points.
I have stayed in several airbnbs for Macon over the years and this is now my favorite rental property in this city. The house is absolutely gorgeous and has everything you could possibly need. We had a group of 8 and still had plenty of space in the home. We all had a wonderful time catching up in the living room next to the wonderful fire place on a colder night. I would definitely recommend and will definitely be booking again in the future.
