We had an amazing week at this house. It's very privet. You do have a neighbor on one side but you will likely never see them. It does sometimes feel like you are on your own privet island.

Outside: The house has it's own privet beach that you can wade in but the shallow waters aren't the best for swimming. That didn't bother us at all because we had usually spent the whole day in the water some place else. The water was amazing to wake up to and come home to. The water is a combo of bright blues and greens and the color changes throughout the day. If you get in the afternoon you will be delighted around 10-12 when the water changes to it's most vibrant color. It's also on the sunset side of the island so you get to see the sunset every night from the little pavilion. The bleach has nice soft sand but surrounding the beach are some pretty jagged rocks that you will want to climb up on so be sure to have some kind of sneaker or water shoes. There is a grill for cooking outdoors (it was broken when we got there but they came over and made repairs when we made them aware.) There are plenty of places on the beach to safely have a fire and stargaze. The shed is full of coolers, fishing poles and other random things you may find useful on your trip.

Inside: The house is clean and spacious. Beds comfortable enough. The house is well equipped and the screened in porch is heavenly. They provide big jugs of filtered water.

A few things to note:

-There is internet but don't count on it. The internet on the whole island is super spotty. 3G sometimes kicks in at the house but that is spotty as well. This is not the houses fault, it's just how it is on Exuma.

- There is a TV but when we were there was no cable or antenna so it's more just decoration. lol They did bring us a dvd player, but not the correct hookups for it. This was okay for us as we were busy and rather be outside most the time anyway. However, if this is important to you, pack a device of your own..maybe a player with a jump drive full of stuff.

-There was a hurricane last fall so the hammock is no more for now.

- There is a washer but no dryer. You will need to find a spot to hang your clothes outside. It may take a while to dry in humid weather so be sure to wash dry things early in the day so they have all day and night to blow in the breeze. Your clothes will smell live heaven.

Things are closed Sundays so if you arrive on Sunday, let them know what you need prior.

The Perfect Vacation House

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 4 staying at Tortuga House and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect place. We drove from one end of the island to the other in search of secluded beautiful beaches everyday, and we always found them, but we never found a better house and setting. We loved coming home after our adventures and taking in the breath taking view.

Onike and John were wonderful to work with. We would love to come back to the Exumas someday. And we would definitely choose Tortuga House again.

Heaven in the Bahamas

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Tortuga House last month (February 2015) and it was the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. You wake up to the sound of the ocean gently lapping on the beach (that’s how close the water is). Your most pressing decision is whether to have your morning coffee in the screened in porch or to move out to the gazebo and enjoy the gentle breeze. The beach was private and wonderfully secluded. There were days when we saw no one. We felt like we had the Caribbean all to ourselves! The water was a rainbow of blues and greens. From the gazebo, we could see the sun coming up in the morning and setting in the evening. It doesn’t get much better than that! The house is very well equipped and very comfortable. Everything was new and well maintained. We rented a car, which is recommended given the secluded location of the house. Once you got used to driving on the left side of the road and avoiding the potholes, it was fun to drive to town. George Town is a cute little town and we became regulars at the Market and buying our fish at the local hair solon (“clip & chips”). We took a day to take the water taxi across the bay to Stocking Island where we enjoyed hamburgers, Kalik beer at the “Chat & Chill” and played some beach volleyball. Another day, we drove to drive to Little Exuma and had lunch at Santana’s Grill, which we learned was one of Johnny Depp’s hangouts while filming Pirates of the Caribbean (the many pictures of Johnny Depp confirmed that claim). An afternoon at Tropic of Cancer Beach topped off a beautiful day. While Stocking Island was fun and the TOC beach was exquisite, we were very happy to be back at Tortuga House’s private beach after both excursions. As indicated in the write up, if you are looking for nightlife and casinos, this is not the right choice for you. But if you are looking for relaxation and a little slice of heaven on earth, Tortuga House is your place. We would love to have the opportunity to go back again!

Wonderful and Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful home in February, '14. It was awesome! We wanted a quiet getaway with beautiful weather and it was everything we were looking for. The property is clean and well maintained with nice highlights like the large screened in porch and ocean themed mural in the master bedroom. Side trips to various locales on the island were great - make sure to go to the "Chat-n-Chill" via the small ferry boat if you like powder white beaches and a fine rum punch. :-)

Tortuga is the perfect vacation house. The beach is INCREDIBLE - private and perfect for family games of water football! Sunrise and sunsets are spectacular. The house is exceptionally clean and well-equipped. We had a wonderful time and will definitely stay at Tortuga house again!
