About Paul Whalen
I started taking my three children to Carolina House when they were just 4 years old. Though the years, and though all seasons, our family trips to Carolina House have filled our photo albums with fond memories.
Paul Whalen purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Paul Whalen chose Bryson City
Far enough from town (Bryson City) to provide privacy and the mountain experience, yet close enough (15 minutes) to supermarket, fun activities, restaurants, Smoky Mountains Railroad, Deep Creek Entrance to Smoky Mountains National Park, tubing, rafting, hiking, and so much more..
What makes this Cabin unique
3 acre with a bold Alarka Creek running through the property. Creekside trail with fire ring, cut firewood, picnic table, sitting bench, and easy creek access.

Very accommodating owner but some issues with our stay
Our small family (2 adults, I child 4 y.o.) chose Carolina House due to its many amenities and close proximity to Bryson City where we planned to enjoy the train ride with our son. The house is nice and clean and the grounds are spacious, however, potential renters should be aware that there is no cell service (Verizon) here and during our entire stay the house phone and consequently the WiFi line was "down" so we felt a bit isolated with a 4 year old but honestly after several days we adapted and made the most of it.
Upon arrival we called the owner with our concerns (no house telephone/no internet WiFi, gas fireplace not working, spa not heating) and he sent the caretaker over that evening who informed us that the phone and power often go out in that area; they were unable to get the fireplace going and the spa (110v heater) took several days to heat up before we could use it.
The firepit and outside areas by the stream are beautiful but there is a small dog across the street that barks constantly anytime someone goes outside (and does not seem to stop barking) so it does distract from enjoying the outside areas.
On a positive note the master bed is very nice for a rental; there is a washer/dryer and a great front porch to relax on.
It took several days for us to acclimate to not having WiFi, phone, fireplace and the barking dog but by day 4 we were starting to relax and enjoy the stay.
Also, we cannot say enough about how accommodating the owner has been. He made an honest effort during Thanksgiving to rectify the issues and even sent us a small refund due to inconveniences.
Hopefully other travelers will have a better time at this home and under better circumstances.
Again I apologize for the difficulties that occurred during your stay. Unfortunately just prior to your arrival there was a rare severe weather event that knocked out power for several days and downed telephone lines due to ice and broken branches. As discussed during the reservation process, there is no cell service at the house due to the mountain location - thus the reason for a land line with unlimited local and long distance service. The whole house WiFi is via DSL telephone line (the only available this far up the mountain -- good for searches and communications). Unfortunately the rare event of telephone lines being down affected the both the telephone and internet connection. Just down the mountain and in town cell service and free wireless internet service is ample.
I was unaware of the barking dog. There are only two homes within sound distance of the creek. Since your review I have spoken the specific home owner and believe the situation has been addressed.
Again thank you for your stay.
we had a wonderful time. loved the creek and firepit
Clean, Spacious, Great for "Unplugging"
Our family had a great stay here. We loved the hot tub, the screened in porch overlooking the creek, the constant sound of the creek, and overall comfort of the place. And Paul, the owner, was fantastic. Received every call and responded to each and every request. Truly a fantastic owner.
I would have given the property 5 stars but there were a couple of things that we wished we would have known going into it:
- The "wifi" here is basically unusable. When it does work, which is about 50% of the time, it's way too slow to do anything other than send texts. There is ZERO cell service here so you need the wifi to do anything regarding researching what to do the next day or communicating with anyone from the outside world. I was planning on working a bit while on this trip and it was simply not possible with the provided internet connection.
- The fridge had NOTHING in it. So we had to make an extra trip to the grocery story for condiments and little miscellaneous things...kind of a hassle when that means a 40 minute round trip plus time in the store.
- The location is at least 40 minutes to the nearest trailhead. Most popular trailheads within the park are at least a 90 minute drive, most were more than that.
- have the whole trip planned before you arrive. The wifi will not allow you to dependably research things to do in the area.
- Bring EVERYTHING for your eating aside from dishes and silverware. Fridge has nothing in it at all. So you'll need to remember condiments and little things like that.
Overall we loved the place. Aside from the wifi, the empty fridge, and the long drive to any trails, it was a fantastic week.
If you're looking to unplug and get away and quiet all the noise of hectic life, not sure you can do much better than this place.
Thank you for your review. I am very happy you enjoyed your stay. I look forward to your return visit with a 10% discount as a returning guest.
It is common for cell phone service to be difficult at various locations in the mountains. As such a land line telephone is provided with unlimited local and long distance calling.
The only internet provider available at the house is through telephone DSL service through Frontier Communications. I am sorry you had difficulty. Previous guest and my personal experience has been positive with the internet for email, internet searching, download and upload files, and streaming Netflix. Given the DSL service, there is a limitation to competing use from multiple devices as the same time. I routinely make inquiries to determine if additional options are available for internet use.
Your comment is correct in that the refrigerator is cleaned out after every rental. This is required for health and safety purposes. I hope you appreciated the ample supply of coffee (regular & decaf), assortment of teas, spices, cooking oil, flour, sugar, sugar substitute, and additional cooking condiments provided.
The Great Smoky Mountain National Park - Deep Creek Entrance is located just minutes north of downtown Bryson City (a 20 minute drive from the rental house). Our family's favorite is the 2.3 mile '3 Waterfall Hike'
Thank you again for selecting Carolina House as your vacation destintation. We look forward to your return.
Great stay, super-helpful host
This is a really great property--plenty of space and everything you would expect. Paul is a great communicator and very helpful with info about both the property and surrounding area. Would definitely stay again.
Great secluded property surrounded by smoky mountains
The house is great, very clean and secluded. The best part is sitting on the screened in porch in the mornings and evenings listening to the creek rush below!
