Asheville Area Cottage Rental Photos and Description

QUEEN bed, QUEEN sofa bed, SINGLE chair bed, 2nd BR w/single (separate entrance)

REFOCUS COTTAGE is over the meadow and through the woods, but this is no grandma’s house. LESS THAN 5 MILES to downtown Asheville, VRBO 387785 is an elegant, uncluttered contemporary studio-style get-away on SPECTACULARLY LANDSCAPED GROUNDS and ample levels of hardwood decking invite you to gaze over it in style. Whether you are a city mouse or country mouse, an executive, teacher, doctor, writer, artist, dreamer, mountain lover, fly-fisherman or culture vulture this art-filled cottage is an inspired and inspiring retreat. Ideal for one person or a couple but suitable for four or more with a queen futon sofa/bed (mattress quality), a convertible and very comfortable chair bed and a blow up mattress option PLUS another sofa bed above, in a SECOND BEDROOM privately accessed from the outside decking with a lovely view of its own. Formally my art studio, this is a very private feeling property with the safety provided by the fact that it is a part of our property and we live here year round maintaining the very meadow you'll soon be romping in.

See also: VRBO 482027 REFOCUS FIVE for a 3 BR 1.5 B option. It is right across the street and perfect it you need more room. You only need to walk across the street to access the same outdoor amenities!

Chic and sophisticated, here is a clapboard cottage that is comfortable and cozy without being cluttered with cute. Its open floor plan features a cathedral ceiling and large windows framing woods, sky and meadow.

Come for a season. Stay for a year.

NEED AN EVENT VENUE? - think about our FOUR ACRES, our meadow, creek, promenade of pines, glen, pavilion and large fire pit, boccie ball, horse shoes... ideal for small weddings, parties, birthday celebrations. Great photo ops. (For our other listing, please SEE also REFOCUS FIVE VRBO 482027 - 3BR, 1.5 BATH with a garage. Because these properties are directly across the street from each other, the two rentals together (see VRBO 482027) make it perfect for a reunion, a birthday gathering, a small wedding, graduation or anniversary and call me for the catering options...

Write a best seller here. Compose a modern symphony. Or just drive 6 minutes to downtown Asheville for GREAT FOOD - Indian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, South American, Mexican, Thai, Spanish tapas, French, Continental, vegan... Within 2 miles of your cottage is AMBROZIA - fantastic new local Bar + Bistro (chef originally from Albuquerque New Mexico) with an ever-changing southern influenced menu of creative small plates and magnificent farm to table meals. For great pizza, calzones and local beer... Marcos is also in the neighborhood. We have GREAT, often daring THEATER at NC Stage Company and several larger venues with popular presentations. Tour the largest privately owned home in America, the famed French Chateau the BILTMORE ESTATE built by the Vanderbilts on grounds of unparalleled beauty any time of year. When the LEAVES are changing or the rhododendrons and azaleas BLOOMING our vistas are breathtaking.

WANT TO SHOP? Only a short drive to downtown provides a walk-able shopping experience, an alternative to the mall (which of course we also have). There are too many to mention, but our galleries, The Blue Spiral, Haen Gallery, The New Morning Gallery exhibit brilliance and originality.

The Highland Craft Guild and the Folk Art Center display the best Appalachian crafts. WANT ART WITH YOUR BEER? Repeatedly named BEER CITY USA, Asheville boasts 20+ craft breweries and at the RIVER ARTS DISTRICT fine art meets fine beers while you stroll in and out of working artists studios, meeting the artists while they are creating unique pottery and paintings.

WANT TO DRESS UP? The Grove Park Inn hosts events worthy of your finest and it is ONLY A FIVE MINUTE DRIVE from your cottage! It's Ballroom Dance contest draws international visitors. WANT TO DRESS UP DIFFERENTLY? Attend a festival or bar hop. Our MUSIC VENUE'S are varied and fun. Rolling Stone has named THE ORANGE PEEL one of the top five music venues in AMERICA, just to mention one. I recently attended the symphony and found it exhilarating, particularly followed by some late night local blues, jazz or fusion...

WANT TO LAUGH? There are funny people everywhere, but particularly on the La Zoom Comedy bus tour.

WANT EXERCISE? Hiking, biking, fly-fishing, kayaking, white water rafting, horseback riding, zip-lining... golf. Donald Ross designed four of our GOLF COURSES. Grove Park Inn's Links is only 5 minutes away which houses a FIVE STAR SPA for relaxing in style afterwards. A short drive to SHOJI JAPANESE SPA provides a more remote-feeling to your soak. Here you can get a massage and then enjoy breathtaking vistas from private tubs over-looking the Smoky Mountains.

Back to BEER... take the BREWS CRUISE on a pedal assist electric bike. If wine is your beverage of choice, visit the Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar - a library filled with books old and new, where wine is poured in intimate lounges among the stacks.

TIRED OF RUNNING AROUND ON VACATION? Your kitchen is fully loaded with granite counter tops and herbs right outside your door. Let the birds wake you or the insects sing you to sleep. STAR GAZE through the generous breadth of windows and sky light. Stars here don't compete with street lights. Roast marshmallows in the meadow's fire-pit. Grill outside beneath the sky. Enjoy boccie ball and horseshoes or waste some time reading and sunning on the deck.

WALK in the park-like meadow and sway in one of the hammocks under trees whispering alongside the CREEK. Bring your Nook or even a real book (these are like connected blogs typed onto bound paper). Enjoy the evening by the fire pit and walk the woods on the property. PROMENADE the pine corridor, amble in the glen or walk the wooded path above the cottage where nut hatches rustle in the fallen leaves and the woodpecker types away in Morse-code.

REST on a stone bench in a contemplative spot of garden and shut off your phone to hear an old fashioned kind of twitter. Spin in the sky chair under a one hundred and fifty year old maple and feel like a kid again.

SOAK in your claw foot bath tub after a bike ride or day hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains, then curl up under a down duvet on soft linens and turn on the heated mattress on your side. Hardwood floors. Spotlessly clean. Large HD flat screen, cable and high speed internet. Wi Fi.

This place offers the best of both worlds - On FOUR ACRES in a safe eclectic neighborhood provides a remote country retreat minutes to a cultural excursion in the PARIS OF THE SOUTH - Asheville.

Visitors to REFOCUS COTTAGE include lady bugs, chattering squirrels and chip monks, wild turkeys, a blue heron, crow, wood-peckers, jays, finches and an occasional furry fox, possum or raccoon. And of course, you. Bring your camera.

About Gayle Wurthner

Since graduating from Carnegie Mellon - quite a few years ago as a painter, I have had many creative occupations including theater, film and teaching. A strong desire to share the property that my husband and I have sculpted together for 15 years has led to converting my free standing art studio to REFOCUS COTTAGE. We love to travel and recognize that this is our favorite destination. Home.

Gayle Wurthner purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Gayle Wurthner chose Asheville Area

Designed and built as an artist's studio, it has evolved to a guest house for our many visitors, seasonal guests or long term tenants.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a calm, restorative, inspiring, unpretentious place. All who visit want to stay. Read in a hammock. Build a fire in the meadow or a dam in the creek. See stars you've forgotten from your skylights and many windows. Have a wine on the deck. Or a nap.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality. This was our first trip to Asheville and it couldn't have been more perfect. Your cottage has been like a home away from home for us and we'll always cherish it as the place where we spent our first Christmas together. We hope to see you again soon for another visit. Happy New Year!

The cottage is perfect for visiting downtown, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway or just relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean and well kept. Within minutes there's downtown shopping and restaurants. I especially enjoyed the "off the grid" time; the hammock by the creek provided a peaceful environment to nap and read. Also, the fire pit makes for an evening of fun and looking at the stars. There is easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway with lots of breathtaking overlooks. I recommend a stay.

Wonderful Experience!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week in this cottage and had the most wonderful time. The proprty is so convenient to everything Asheville has to offer, yet feels like you are miles from civilization. There are stores and great restarants only 5 minutes away. At the end of the day, we would sit on the deck with a glass (or two) of wine and revel in the beauty, the sounds, the fresh, crisp air. The deck overlooks a spacious, tree-filled meadow with a creek running through it. Gayle is a delightful, accomodating hostess. She stocked the cabin with thoughful touches that make one instantly feel at home. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful cottage and yard with lovely rolling hills and meadow.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very clean and well decorated, a perfect fit for my husband, self and 2 teens. My 13 & 14 year olds loved the yard. There was cornhole, Vollyball, frisbee, bad mitten, and a Bon fire area. A lot to do just at the cottage. Gayle was so nice and helpful with things to do and where to go eat. The Asheville area is beautiful with a lot of attractions and friendly people. I would definitely recommend this rental to ALL my friends and WILL go back someday soon. I hear fall is the most beautiful:)

Lovely place and so convenient to Asheville!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a delightful long weekend getaway destination at this cottage, rainy weather notwithstanding. Artful design of interior space and beautiful yard and exterior decks for relaxing in better weather, and so close to downtown Asheville attractions. Highly recommended!

Re-Focus Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful getaway spot for the North Carolina mountains. The acreage makes you feel as though you are secluded, overlooking beautiful views, yet you are so close to the dining and shopping of downtown Asheville. Gayle is very helpful with suggestions of how to maximize your time downtown or take advantage of the amenities in the cottage. Staying in is definitely an option, the large deck and beautiful views keep you captivated, and the interior has a beautiful design and amazing artwork. To name a few of my favorite things; the bed warmer was awesome as it is dual action and one person may be more cold natured than another, the kitchen is well stocked with everything from cookware to spices, and the fire-pit a lovely homey addition that is just a short walk down from the cottage. There are so many ways to enjoy this cabin! I would recommend it to couples, families, and groups alike. The owners have put a lot of thought and love into making this rental amazing for any kind of vacationer.
