Cozy Quiet Getaway
Our team (19 of us) spent the weekend here on our annual retreat. Everyone enjoyed frolicking with the chickens, the views, the available amenities, the free wifi, the music room for epic dance parties, the coziness of the house and the cabins and the help (if needed) from Harold and Fei. Great place to chill, relax and enjoy coming together.
So I am going to be super honest here, I organised this place for 17 guys to celebrate a friends bachelor party. Of course yes there was lots of partying and loud music and generally a lot of fun going on. And yes we kinda messed up and somehow emptied the hot tub of water. And yes at times the places was less than tidy.
Things turned south on Saturday when we can home to find that the slow roast beef that we had been cooking in the oven had been turned off by the owner. For starters not sure why the owner was in the house, and no 2 why would they turn of the beef that we had all been thinking about eating that night. It delayed our dinner considerably.
Problem 2. Ok so there is a drum kit that we weren't meant to play and of course one of the guys got a little silly and played the drum kit for a couple of seconds, the owners wife came in immediately to tell us to stop playing, OK case solved.
2 seconds later the owner comes in going absolutely crazy at us all about the noise. At this point we had all been partying for quiet a while and it was obvious to us all that the owner had been doing way more partying that day than anyone at the bachelor party. (not sure where) I tried to calm him down but he was completely and totally irrational. I asked him how we can solve this problem but he was so completely irate because of his highly intoxicated state that he actually had no clear response. We basically had to force him out of the house.
No apology the next morning, just his tail between his legs trying to avoid the whole situation.
My take on things. The owners were too hands on and needed to give us our space. They have to realize that if its a big house designed for big gatherings that there might be some noise. If there is a problem, get the attention of someone from outside and ask them respectfully and calmly to turn the music down or resolve the problem like adults, not like children.
Barging into the house uninvited and screaming and yelling at the top of your lungs is not going to solve anything. Things could have very easily gone way worse for the owner with a different group of people.
Yes the place was very messy with beer cans and glasses and food .. but come Sunday morning the house was spotless and we actually didn't even break a single glass.
Despite the owner, we all really loved the spot and had a great time enjoying the view, the river, the dogs on the property and generally enjoying this great property
Thanks for the positive and honest review as it explains first hand why we are no longer accepting stag, bachelor parties. Good clean up.Thanks,
Great hosts, great for large groups! RECOMMENDED!
Harold and Fei were amazing hosts. I bought a youth leadership group to the HH, we did our own cooking, and rented the entire house and cabins.
They were very accommodating we did have a larger size group we had many questions about sleeping situation, what's included in the kitchen, how many washrooms... Etc - Fei is very welcoming and very responsive to replying all the questions.
Throughout our stay they would check in with us to see how things are, Harold knew we were going to do a scavenger hunt, he ploughed the fields so we could go thru the fields to enjoy the amazing scenery. We were hoping to go pick blueberries for an activity.... We came just as the season ended, he allowed our team to pick the blackberries on his property.
The house is very spacious, kitchen area can be very warm especially when cooking,as well as the cabins but with a large group this space was awesome.
We did have a few plumbing issues (just the chain came loose), but just find Harold and he's for sure one awesome handyman!
Looking to start an amazing bon fire? - Harold will help with your set up, and even provide the wood!
Highly recommended you bring paper plates cause those can just burned in the foyer too, so less waste
The room on the top floor might look awkward in the photos, don't be scared it's a pretty awesome honeymoon suite. Just ask Fei and she will help cover it up.
Overall, I would recommend the Hammond House and their hosts! (Our Group of 26 had a great time)
Fantastic Property for a Big Group!
A large group of us (24 adults) rented the property over the holidays and we only regret that we didn't find this place sooner! Fei and Harold were excellent hosts, and their two dogs (as well as a bunch of chickens!) were great company to have around the property as well. The industrial kitchen was perfect for our large group, and there was more than enough space in the farmhouse for everyone to gather together for meals and activities. The hot tub, outdoor fire pit and amazing views made our stay even better.
We will definitely be returning to the property in the Spring, and look forward to more adventures on the farm!
