About Jeanette Gretsch

The Smith Family consists of Mamaw and Pampaw, owners of the property, and their 4 daughters and their families. There are a total of 10 grandchildren. Green Cove Cottage was purchased as a place where the family can get together and get away from it all.

Jeanette Gretsch purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Jeanette Gretsch chose Virginia

The eldest Smith daughter lives in Raleigh. The rest of the family loves visiting her because North Carolina is so gorgeous and green and not too hot (they mostly live in Texas, where it is too hot) and has stunning fall colors, actual snow, and beautiful clean running water. When contemplating a place for everyone to get together, it was unanimous that it should be this part of the world, and the Creeper Trail was the final attraction.

What makes this cabin unique

It's right on the Creeper trail for easy biking and walking for the whole family, and only 3 miles down the trail it crosses the Appalachian trail for the more adventurous. The quiet and restfulness of the location are unparalleled. The stars are magnificent at night. And the views from the top of the ridge are breathtaking. Plus there is a wonderful hill perfect for sledding right next to the house.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Very cozy and convenient to Damascus and Grayson Highlands and Virginia Creeper. The only things that would keep it from receiving a 5 for many are 1) the lack of a cellular signal or WiFi access in the loft (you have to walk across the driveway to the main house to get the latter), and 2) a potential reduction in privacy if anyone is renting the main house. We didn't need WiFi except for our morning weather check and no one was renting the house, so those weren't issues for us.

Quiet, Comfortable and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

These cozy quarters were just what we needed for a weekend away for biking the Virginia Creeper Trail. The driveway drops right off to the trail. The loft had all the conveniences needed for a pleasant stay. Hot shower. Firm bed. Spacious kitchen/living area. Hope to be able to return in the future.

A Happy Birthday

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed staying here on the Virginia Creeper Trail to celebrate his birthday. We had everything we needed and enjoyed hiking the property and having really close access to the trail. We were also delighted to find a new trout fishing pond business across the street. We were honored to be the first 2 customers for opening day. We cooked the fresh trout easily at this house. We hope to come back and bring our family!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you had a good getaway and we hope to see you back. I am excited to hear about the trout business, I had no idea someone was going to open something like that and it is the perfect thing for the area. This area is well know for its trout fishing but none of us have ever done it.

Cozy but roomy!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, cozy spot with everything you need. Lovely full kitchen, roomy bath with tub and shower. It was clean and well maintained. The phone was dead which was a bummer because no cell service or wifi. I would still give it a "A" rating!

Owner's Response: So glad you had a good time. Sorry to hear the phones went out, we lose power fairly frequently in the mountains but not usually the phones.

Perfect spot for a beautiful hiking weekend

  • 5 of 5

The place is cozy and clean with a well equipped kitchen. Logistics of getting in and out was super simple. We could not have been happier. It is literally ON the trail so it was very easy to set out for our hike. Definitely want to come back as we barely scratched the surface of what the area has to offer for outdoor recreation.
