About Tina Magnuson

A seasoned TV professional, I spent 4 years living in the house while completing extensive renovations and landscaping. It was a true labor of love!

Tina Magnuson purchased this house in 2006

Why Tina Magnuson chose Devon / Walnut Beach

The area was once a holiday makers seaside destination complete with amusement park. Now it's being revitalized and art galleries are moving in to our little shopping district which survived Hurricane Sandy just fine! You'll find the coffee table book 'Sand in our Shoes' which chronicles the history of the area through photos and personal stories in the living room upon check in.

What makes this house unique

I treat my house like a B'n'B without the breakfast or a host. You'll find each room is extremely well appointed and comfortable with attention to details. It's not a bare bones rental. It's a real home full of my things for others to enjoy down to the collection of art books and 3D puzzles! I believe that details are important down to making sure planters of herbs are available for guests to use and enjoy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Stayed in this home for a long memorial day weekend. Exactly as pictured, zero complaints. Tina was easy to coordinate with. The beds were very comfortable. Her housekeeper lives across the street, was very sweet, and met us with the keys on our arrival. Neighboors and locals were very friendly. Two minute walk to the beach. Multiple playgrounds within 5 minute walk we took our one year old to. Ice cream shop and place to get lobster rolls/chowder 3 minute walk away – delicious and convenient. Home was very clean. Has a BBQ grill in the back we used each day. A very nice weekend, we would recommend this home to others and stay again. Deposit was returned without any issue a week later.

A quaint New England village located on the Long Island Sound, Milford, Connecticut, founded in 1639, is the sixth oldest town in Connecticut. Boasting the second longest town green in New England, it hosts numerous art fairs in addition to lobster and oyster festivals throughout the summer. Conveniently located just 65 miles from New York City, Milford is easily accessible via interstate or by taking the MetroNorth train making this the perfect summer home for families that need to commute to the city for work. The station, located in the heart of the village, is within easy walking distance of restaurants, bike/kayak rentals, shops and beautiful harbor where outdoor concerts are held weekly in summer.

The rental property, located just steps from the beautiful sandy Walnut Beach, is located between Silver Sands State Park and the Housatonic River. Cycling, kayaking, stand up paddling, sailing, fishing, windsurfing and kiting are all popular activities here.

Other Activities: Enjoy kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing or kite surfing on the Sound or fishing, at the end of the block. Bird lovers will enjoy the observation deck over looking the Housatonic River at the Audubon Nature Center just down the road. Always a fun family outing, catch the Bluefish, the minor league baseball team in Bridgeport just 15 minutes away.

Golf: The Great River Golf Club offers a challenging championship course as well as excellent dining at Monty's River Grille.

Beautiful house and very well equipped

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautifully and tastefully decorated. It literally has everything you need right down to the ingredients to make S'Mores. You could literally parachute in with your clothes and some groceries and not need a single other thing. Tina was a great host - answered questions promptly and provided good suggestions when asked. We spent time at both Walnut Beach and the Silver Strand state park beach. Both are nice but bring your water shoes or flip flops. Lots of families as there are no big waves on the sound and the low tide leaves pools with fish and hermit crabs to watch. The teens in our group also walked out to Charles Island at low tide - easy to do. The backyard was a favorite place - nice gardens and fires in the Chimera and watching the fireflies in the evening. Don't miss the Walnut Beach Creamery - fantastic ice cream with unique flavors - it was hard not to visit every day. Costa Azzura Italian restaurant is a 5 minute walk - good basic Italian with big portions and friendly staff. In fact, everyone in town is friendly. There's a nice mile long boardwalk to the state park - great for morning walks or runs. Beach tends to be crowded on weekends but weekdays were pleasant. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. This was different for us as we previously had been to Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, Cape May, Ocean City and Cape Cod. We wanted a place that was closer as we brought my wife's 85 year old mother - she had a great time reading and relaxing on the beach and in the backyard. The only downside is a lack of nightlife. There's a well stocked liquor store, a nice deli, the ice cream and bakery next door and one local dining spot that we didn't visit. For anything else you need to travel a bit. There's lots near by however. Don't miss the Greek Spot on the other side of the state park - great food. In summary, we had a great time and the history of the area is fascinating - the book on the living room bookshelf - Sand in Our Shoes - tells the story with pictures and personal recollections - was a very interesting read.

Beautiful home and location!

  • 5 of 5

It was great to get back to Connecticut and visit friends (and eat pizza!), and Tina's house was the perfect place to stay. Just down the street from the beach, it's a beautiful location and a very lovely house - plenty of room to enjoy with a few friends, the bed was comfortable, and everything worked as expected. The house has everything you need, and the convenience store is a short walk around the block.

Tina was great to deal with and helpful; looking forward to getting back here next summer to spend more time on the beach.

The place was nice, BUT......

  • 3 of 5

The location is great and a peaceful place for a family vacation. You will find everything you need for a nice stay. Quiet and cosy little yard.

House is well located, but extremely busy with the owners personal items and decorations.

Be careful and make sure you place every item back to their place or you will be charge a retainer fee from the security deposit. Same thing with cleaning up before leaving.. do as much as possible to clean up before leaving or it will cost you. In the contract, the estimated cost for cleaning was 150$ and we where not to do the laundry... unfortunately, we were charged an additional 100$.

We have to mention, that if you have back problems and like firm bed mattresses, you will be extremely disappointed. They are soft super soft, I'd even say lumped and offer very little comfort.

Oh! and in the basement, where you will need to go to do some laundry, there is a very strong smell of moth balls to cover up a very bad smell. ( we believe it was cat urine)

Owner's Response: As clearly indicated in the lease, the $150 cleaning fee is only an estimate for the minimum of 5 hours of turn over cleaning and does not include laundry or any additional cleaning that may be needed including restoring the house to how it was found. I always leave it to my guests whether or not they want to do their own laundry and remake the beds, etc. I only deduct what I am charged by my housekeeper and the laundromat which she has to use when there is extensive laundry as there was in this case. In addition to vacuuming up quite a bit of sand, degreasing the kitchen range (the kitchen windows had to be opened to clear out the smell of greasy meat), she spent additional time looking for items such as the can opener which was eventually found on a dining room shelf and a waste paper basket found on top of a book case. With regards to the beds, I've never had anyone complain about the feather bed toppers. In fact my guests last winter asked where they could buy them. They are easily removed if guests prefer a firmer bed. Finally, the moth balls in the cellar are to keep away any spiders as it is an unfinished cellar. As no cats have ever peed in the house, I don't know what you smelled. It may be that the neighborhood outside kitty the street cares for may have peed outside the door. I don't know. I didn't smell anything when I arrived with my housekeeper to interview a new gardener. I'm sorry the weather wasn't the best for your stay and that you feel the $237.20 that was deducted from the security is unfair. To clean an entire house usually costs more I think you'll find.
