Sterling’s Villa In Ubud, Bali

The Balinese believe that..” every home has a soul and that they are its heart.”

My two storied shared villa is on the west edge of Ubud, the art and cultural center of Bali. The villa is away from all traffic, as there are no cars here, only motor bikes and lovely walking paths. You are close enough to walk to Ubud center where the action is or the big grocery store. On one side of the villa is a view of rice fields and in the front is a path to a beautiful family run restaurant in a natural garden setting where you can order room service if you want.

The villa comes with wifi, and house cleaning service six days a week by the sweetest man named Gede. They all watch the villa closely to keep things secure.

We would share the kitchen, but the rest of the downstairs is your private space which includes a day bed, your bedroom with mosquito netting over the canopy,a private bath with tub and shower and a private covered patio with hammock. It’s fully furnished with linens provided. There is an inexpensive laundry nearby. If you’d like to paint, I have a painting table. There is also a yoga mat and use of a local pool.

You can often hear gamelon music in the evening coming from a Balinese temple and connect to friendly village folk if you like. The birds and tropical nature sounds are like background music here.

There are many great restaurants and museums within walking distance. There is also a place to take yoga classes nearby with an amazing view. If you want to rent a motor bike, you can park nearby, otherwise there is a taxie stand down some steps 5 minutes away. I’ll make sure you’re picked up at the airport with a smile and a sign with your name on it if you’d like.

Because I live here, I know the best English speaking drivers to take you to places you’d like to go to. I know where you can get the best massages in a beautiful atmosphere and the best Balinese cooking classes etc…

I would love to help make sure your trip to Bali was wonderful in every way. Warm regards,

About Sterling Nelson

Greetings, I have been visiting Bali for 14 years , but have lived here full time for the last 3 years. I believe I live in Paradise. I am a psychologist , but now write and do art too. I am American, but also lived in Europe for 10 years.

I love getting to know my guests and hope to make their stay with me unforgettable.

Why Sterling Nelson chose Ubud

I am location, location around no noise, polution, roosters, etc... You can walk to many wonderfully charming restaurants near by and even get room service here if you want.

Because I live here too... I can be a ultimate concierge for anything you need... including where to get great massages for cheap and art and yoga classes.

Also, even as a single woman I can walk late at night safely. super secure here.

What makes this cottage unique

My property has location , location. It is quiet, ( no pigs or barking dogs, or car noises). It feels like Bali Bird Park and is so beautiful with tropical flora everywhere, yet access to international cuisine.

Penestanan ... a traditional and pretty village of artists and bead-workers, a western village of Ubud. It has a population of about 2000, which is quite large for a Balinese village. It’s hard to believe that the quaint village of Penestanan is a short walk from the center of bustling Ubud, the cultural and artistic center of Bali.

Historic Penestanan is nestled between the famous villages of Campuhan and Sayan where some of the earliest foreign visitors to Bali chose to make their homes in the 1930‘s. Surrounded by beautiful terraced rice-fields, this charming village is the home of hundreds of painters and bead-workers who live and work in their traditional walled family compounds.

The name Penestanan comes from penastan which means bowl for holy water. The river Bhangsuh begins from a spring in the north of Penestanan village and joins with the Campuhan River in the south of the village. Penestanan ladies are famous for their beautiful skin, which is attributed to the properties of this special river.

According to history, Ubud once had a king who donated land to people who gifted unique works of art to him. So people with artistic trades as painters, stone and wood carvers, jewelers, basket and textile makers, etc. were all given land and gradually villages grew that each specialized in their own particular type of art.

So today, many Balinese villages are known in two ways - they have a formal name, like Penestanan, and they are also known for the art they specialize in, like the Painters and Bead Workers Village.

Also, In the 1930s, when artist Walter Spies came to live in Bali, he settled in Campuhan, which is part of Penestanan. And later artist Arie Schmit took up residence in Penestanan Village. This resulted in a further development of art in the community, and now the village streets are lined with interesting private art galleries and small shops displaying beaded accessories.

Although Penestanan caters well for the tourists, the local people are welcoming and friendly, and a smile is never far from their eyes. They are relaxed, helpful and friendly, always ready to stop and talk - their peaceful faces are never far from a smile. As they go about their daily activities of preparing offerings, working in the rice fields, praying and doing their work - visitors pass by and enjoy a glimpse of a different way of life.
