About Carol McGrady

The hospital I was employed by offered an early retirement plan. I decided to take advantage of it. I retired and enjoyed it for awhile but I really missed being with people. My son suggested that I update the old farm house and rent it to tourists. I took his advice. I have really enjoyed meeting all of the nice renters who have came from different states and a few from oversees.

Why Carol McGrady chose Blue Ridge Highlands

My grandparents lived in this house until I was a teenager. I spent a lot of happy hours playing with my cousins and spending nights with my grandparents. Several different people owned the property after my grandparents moved. The last time it was for sale; my son wanted to buy the land but he did not want the house. My husband agreed to buy the house. It was in pretty bad shape and I did not want to let it fall down or be torn down because of all the happy memories I had.

What makes this house unique

There was a swing on the front porch when my grandparents lived here. I loved sitting on the front porch and swinging in that swing.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Carol, We really enjoyed our visit. I hope we left everything in order. We loved staying at your place! It was so fun to wander through the woods and see the first signs of spring on the way. We were taken with the abundance of springs and streams in your area. I hope all goes well with the calving. Thanks again for the care and cleanliness of your Little Wilson Retreat and for having enough pots and pans to cook a meal.

Very nice

  • 4 of 5

Loved the property and location. Nice views from property and close to Grayson Highlands. House was well stocked with everything we needed. At 6'6" tall, learned quickly to duck my head when going from living room to kitchen and up stairs. Having only one bathroom was a minor inconvenience. All in all we had a great time and it more than met our expectations.

Owner's Response: A very nice couple. I did not have the pleasure of meeting them but I talked to Joyce on the telephone. She left the house immaculate. She even washed all of the dirty linens and placed them back in the closet and on the bed. I would definitely recommend them to other property owners.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful stay in a gorgeous part of Virginia. The property is a well maintained old farmhouse. The home is modern, but retains its original charm.

It has plenty of space and everything you'll need. Grayson Highlands State Park is nearby (~20min) and you can spend days exploring all the trails there. Was a great place for the family.

Wonderful, Relaxing Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our getaway in the quiet mountainside of Southwestern Virginia. There was plenty of space in three large bedrooms, washer/dryer, and plenty of space for the kids to run. Owners Carol and Louis treated us like family and were so very kind. We'd love to come back year after year for unplugging (be advised...no internet or cell phone service, but lots of fireflies!) Thank you for a delightful and relaxing summer vacation. The drive was about 30 minutes to hiking and forests and 90 minutes to wineries and Mayberry.

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Little Wilson Retreat, and it exceeded all our expectations. This is the most charming home in the most beautiful setting. Everything was immaculately clean and well kept. The owner was wonderful to deal with, and made us feel welcomed. This was a very special, bonding trip for my family. We ranged in age from 17 to 70, and every person seemed to enjoy our visit. Even our two Shih Tzus loved lying on the porch or under the shade tree in the front yard. Initially we were a bit frantic because we did not have cell phone service at the house, but this forced us to actually interact and talk with each other. That was refreshing.

I left the trip with such a sense of peace in my heart and relaxation throughout my body.

Thank you Carol for sharing this lovely home with my family. We are already talking about another trip to Little Wilson Retreat.
