'What a view!' Will be your first words when you enter Highlander Cottage.
Located just 30 minutes from Thunder Bay and a little over an hour from Grand Marais, Minnesota this cottage is the perfect base 'home' for you to explore from and return too each day.
Custom built. Highlander cottage, open year around, offers it's guests an arts and crafts style with a little post and beam thrown in. The inspiration for the one floor plus loft 1800 square foot layout was the panoramic view of Lake Superior...none other like it ! I designed the floor plan with an open living room/ kitchen concept incorporating a small cozy reading loft when you want to get away. The bedrooms are designed with privacy in mind. They are at opposite ends of the cottage and each has it's own bathroom with ample ceramic tile showers. For those bath aficionados the master has "ye ole" clawfoot tub.
The living room has a large gas fireplace to keep you warm while you look through all the windows to the lake. Off the living room is a large covered porch so rain or shine you can be outside enjoying the view in the new patio furniture from Lazyboy! The second side deck off the kitchen is convenient for dining and BBQs or maybe just to take in the afternoon sun.
The kitchen is fully equipped for those of us who love to cook....and bake! If there is something missing I will make sure you have it! This is a working kitchen designed to minimize steps and enjoy the wonderful view while you are preparing.
The cottage is located in a very private setting with no neighbors on either side. It is a large property offering a camp fire area up by the cottage and a nature trail down to the ledge rock edge of Lake Superior where you can sit and ponder life. With the Mink Mountains literally out your back door one can take the many hiking trails from easy to challenging. One of my favorites is the short walk to Picnic Point where a picnic lunch is a must! During the winter months these trails are wonderful for snow shoes. For those who like breaking trail... X country skiing is the best. Whether is be through the woods or on the lake when frozen over....a challenge is always waiting! Highlander Cottage is a silent sports persons dream destination any time of the year. Whether you are a reader, photographer, artist, writer, silent sports enthusiast, or a tourist that likes to be off the beaten path this is for you. Oh by the way the cottage DOES have WIFI so you will always be ...connected.

Having grown up in northern Wisconsin on a family resort I guess I have the hospitality business in my blood. I love being able to share Highlander Cottage as it gives others a chance to experience this enchanting area. I have owned property in the Thunder Bay, Mink Mountain area now for 12 years. I fell in love the minute I drove over the mountain and saw the view of the lake....awe struck! I have also grown to love my Canadian neighbors. We have a community here of magnificent, adventurous people who really appreciate Lake Superior and all it has to offer.
My previous property at Mink Mountain- SUNRISE COTTAGE_ was in the Vacation Rental Pool for 3 years. I had a 5 star rating and met some FABULOUS people. I am anticipating more of the same goodness with Highlander Cottage. See you soon!
Bonzi Wuebben purchased this house in 2013
I walked onto this property in the winter and I could not get over the view. Truly unbelievable ! I knew this was the place to build my Highlander Cottage so, a love affair ensued...oh and it's on Lake Superior too !
Highlander Cottage is in a rather private area of Mink Mountain so the animals love it here. I have bear, deer, fox, ducks, eagles...on and on....visit me through out the year. So, you never know what you are going to encounter when you look out the windows to the lake or walk out the back door that faces the mountains!!!
When Sunrise Cottage sold (owner's previous rental property) we had doubts, until we saw the view. Every inch of Highland Cottage captures the magic of the big lake...where past meets future in the present. What a gift to be given page one.
I'm tempted to fill the guest book with superlatives, but then what would I say next year. We'll be back. There isn't a gallery in all of Paris where you get to watch Van Gogh paint the moon we saw on our anniversary night. Delicious!
Wow!!! When we arrived we had a welcoming committee of a Mama Bear and 2 cubs! We drove up , went in the house to check it out, came back out to get our stuff and she was there. We just sat on the deck and watched the bears eat grass and play around. They stayed about an hour, and when they left we unpacked the car. This house is absolutely beautiful, the beautiful lake right in front of you , the peace and quiet. We stayed 6 nights and I was still seeing new sights inside and out the whole time. Bonzi & luc were wonderful. We asked to borrow a cooler for a picnic and enjoyed chatting with them. The house was spotless, everything you might want was there. The kitchen was a joy to cook in, with quality dishes, pots and pans, small appliances--- it was all there. We only ate out one time because the house and view was better than any restaurant you could go to. The bed linens and towels were great; the bed was comfy and we slept well. The only problem was that we had to leave!!! We don't go back to the same place twice, but this one is back on the bucket list!!! You won't regret renting Highlander Cottage. Thank you Bonzi & Luc
We were fortunate enough to spend an entire week at a gem of a property called the Highlander Cottage. It is situated in the municipality of Neebing just outside of Thunder Bay with a breathtaking view of the imposing Lake Superior and the majestic Mink Mountains. Not only is the property surrounded by natural beauty its owner and our hostess, Bonzi, made our stay unforgettable through her graciousness, welcoming spirit and through her natural charm. She was always there to pass on tips about the local wildlife, the surrounding area as well as any local activities. She welcomed us with a basket of goodies and she even offered us fresh vegetables from her own garden. Where else will you find this hospitality? The cottage itself is pristine – it is tastefully decorated and the kitchen is fully functional. I grew up in Thunder Bay and we were able to prepare some delicious meals as we played host to some very dear childhood friends. We were there officially on a family holiday but the area is so tranquil that I was able to tackle some work in the evenings as well.
The fact is that we loved our stay so much that we recently contacted Bonzi and we will be returning once again. Our plans this time round call for less activity and more hibernation. We simply want to stay in our PJs, binge watch old episodes of Veep and generally just decompress. We could not think of a better place to do this – we are always met with hospitality and the Highlander Cottage feels like “our home away from home.” This is a testament to Bonzi who never forgoes on the finer details and who has a knack for making you feel right “at home”. Thank you Bonzi for allowing us to share in the splendour of your property and the beauty that is simply you and your personality.
If you enjoy watching the sunrise while having your morning coffee (suggest bringing your own water), a comfortable outdoor lounge area for viewing the rugged shores of Lake Superior (closest LCBO is Thunder Bay so plan ahead), a well equipped kitchen for meal preparation (no local restaurants or stores so be prepared and bring groceries with you), and comfortable beds for a good night's rest (after enjoying a scenic hike up Mink Mtn), then Highlander Cottage (very clean and comfortable) should be on your list of destinations. Your host, Bonzi, is very timely in responding to email inquiries and provides a convenient arrival and departure procedure.
The location and views are beautiful, the property is top-notch. In my experience such rentals are "frugal" with kitchenware (only 4 plates, 4 knives, spoons, forks, etc ) or paper products or comforts, and compensate with an abundance of knickknacks occupying every surface --- Highlander is the refreshing opposite! Nothing is lacking but there is no clutter. It is designed and positioned to enjoy the scene and lends itself to languid days of reading or idle photo processing on one's computer. Bonzi is the quintessential hostess and makes everything easy. In addition the location is suited to visiting many regional natural and historic features of importance and beauty. As a photographer, my expectations were met with red foxes along the approach road and bears waddling through the yard. In summary, this is the finest Home Away rental I have been in and I hope to return.
This house, personally designed and decorated by the owner, is not only beautiful, but a very comfortable home. We were there for four days and wished we could have stayed longer. We experienced a couple of rainy days, but it didn't matter because we so enjoyed just being in the house reading, watching TV and movies, and looking out the large windows at the gorgeous views of Lake Superior. So peaceful! We saw loons, Eagles, bears, deer and a fox from the comfortable, covered porch. The owner has a path that we followed to the shoreline of the lake. Flowers, signs, and chairs along the way make this a great activity. The cottage is comfortably furnished with some personal heirlooms mixed with new comfy couches, chairs, and beds. The owner's artwork adds to the special details that gives added charm to this home. She is not only creative, but a great host who we loved meeting and got to share some great conversation. She supplied suggestions and directions to places of interest in the Thunder Bay Area. We would love to return and we definitely recommend staying in the Highlanders!
This cottage was perfect! The views of Lake Superior were breathtaking! There were great hiking trails within walking distance. I would absolutely recommend this cottage to anyone! The cottage itself is equipped with everything you could possibly need. Bonzi was very helpful with any questions and very quick to respond to emails. The pictures don't do it justice- it's beautiful! You will not be disappointed. We are already planning our next stay. Thanks again for everything :)
For area excursions the ethnic city of Thunder Bay is a short 30 minute drive from the cottage. Fort Williams Historical Park will be a MUST to see as well as Kakabeka Falls. The list truly is never ending for daily adventures. Whether it be to the area parks, such as Thunder Bays Marina Park or Chippewa Falls Park or take a drive to Sleeping Giant Park with all the history of the Silver Islet Mine the beauty of the area will NOT disappoint. Shopping on Bay Street- coffee shops galor while others charter a fishing boat for great Lake Superior fishing...it's all here and more it just depends on YOU and your wishes!
