The wonderfully romantic castle of Monte Lagello, built in 1027, is located on a hill in the heart of Umbria with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside towards Assisi. Beautifully restored in the 1990s, the castle has been converted into 23 privately owned apartments. With chestnut beams and terracotta floors throughout, our apartment has 2 bedrooms, modern bathroom, well equipped kitchen, large and airy living and dining room with private roof terrace, the ideal place for al fresco meals on warm Italian evenings! The large, secluded swimming pool commands magnificent views and is set in spacious grounds including 10 hectares of olive groves. This is the perfect location for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing self-catering holiday in the beautiful Umbrian countryside within easy reach of excellent restaurants and the many historic hilltowns where there are numerous local fiestas throughout the summer. Free plug-in/wireless internet.
Sightseeing and activities: Monte Lagello is within easy reach of the historic towns of Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Spoleto and Orvieto. Surrounded by an abundance of art, architecture and culture including numerous food and music festivals such as the Chocolate festival and renowned Umbrian Jazz festival, both in Perugia, and the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto. Throughout the summer months there are countless local historic fiestas and sagre celebrating food, wine and music in local medieval villages, where you will receive a warm welcome, as well as many free open air concerts. Siena, Florence and other Tuscan gems are close enough for day trips and there is a good rail service from Perugia which means Rome can be visited in a day. Boating and water sports at Lake Trasimeno are half an hour's drive and closer to home there are lovely walks in the Umbrian hills with fantastic views. We provide information on the area in the apartment.
Food and Drink: Excellent restaurants abound in the local villages and countryside, many of which are ‘agiturismi’, serving locally grown produce and some offer their own wine. There is an even greater selection in the nearby towns with a number offering top class fayre in unforgettable settings. Both red and white wines are produced locally, varying from a very drinkable table wine to superior vintages. Our local vineyard offers free tours (including around the vines) and tastings and there are many other local 'cantine' where you can buy wine direct from the growers. 'Vino sfuso' or 'loose wine' is dispensed from 'petrol pumps'! Nearby Torgiano is almost virtually dedicated to wine production and has a both wine and olive oil museums. Umbrian olive oil is among the best in the world and Monte Lagello produces its own organic oil which is available to buy.
There are guide books with restaurant recommendations in the apartment as well as our own list.
If you prefer to dine at home the kitchen is very well equipped (I love cooking) and there are excellent local markets as well as a choice of supermarkets. The roof terrace lends itself to 'al fresco' dining as the sun sets over the Umbian hills, and there is now an 'Umbrian BBQ' in the grounds for private or communal use - Ilario will provide the wood and give instruction!
As this apartment is our second home it is extremely comforjtable and well equipped.
Local Amenities: Laundry facilities are available on site and there is a telephone/fax for emergencies. The local town of Marsciano provides all amenities with a weekly market, a supermarket and a wide range of shops and restaurants. Tennis is available in the nearby village of Mercatello. As well as its historic centre, the city of Perugia offers excellent shopping facilities.
My wife and I have stayed, on a number of occasions in self-catering venues, in Italy, normally in Umbria, including another castle but ML is, undoubtedly the best equipped that we have ever stayed in. There was nothing that we looked for that was not there. The apartment, particularly the patio, was excellent as were the views from every window.
The “castle” is, in fact, a fortified hamlet with the houses forming the walls with, originally, windows facing only inwards and was built by the inhabitants of yesteryear for self protection, so don’t expect cannon! The walls will stop arrows!
It has been magnificently restored and has a couple of streets,a church, a well, a central bread oven, village square and, outside the walls a lovely swimming pool which was not operational when we were there (early May) but, one could imagine, a haven in the later season.
We were lucky (for us) to have the whole place to ourselves (apart from the caretaker, two dogs, very friendly, and a cat) so the peace and quiet were almost painful! When lit at night ML is very atmospheric.
The local scenery of vineyards is beautiful and lush with only a few farmhouses dotted about. Below the castle is an ancient chapel, unfortunately closed.
There are many folders of information and the visitor’s book recommends local eating places. We found Menestrello at Migliano best value and most atmospheric. We also ate at Rendez-vous, Spina and Rosatelli in Marsciano. All were good.
Having been in the general area before we didn’t travel far other than to Todi which is near and worth a visit.
ML is about a 2-3 hour drive from Fiumicino. The final couple of miles on gravel roads might be a bit of a shock for British drivers but you soon accept them. We hired a Fiat Panda and had no problems.
Our stay in ML was totally enjoyable and peaceful and is to be recommended. Go for it!
(If you are interested in staying at ML Colin is happy to email/talk to you, contact via the owners)
I would recommend this holiday to everyone. The castle was absolutely lovely, very atmospheric and had far-reaching and beautiful views of the Umbrian countryside all around. The apartment was well furnished and very comfortable and I thoroughly enjoyed cooking some delicious local foods in the kitchen. The terrace was wonderful for sitting outside at different times of the day enjoying the sun and views.
The pool was glorious in the heat and we all spent many hours playing and swimming and for the heioght of the season it was not at all busy.
Everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful and anything we needed or asked we were helped with immediately.
I would definitely like to return so we can spread our wings even further but managed visits to Rome, Florence, Todi, Assissi and others which were all stunning.
The road is challenging but you don't need a 4x4 - we had a golf and it managed perfectly well on the white roads.
A great holiday and I would definitely go again!
A magical holiday location that lived up to our high hopes and expectations.
Monte Lagello kept two five year olds and an 11-year old entertained for a fortnight, leaving their parents beautifully relaxed by the end of our stay. The apartment is very well-appointed by the standard of other Italian self-catering properties we have stayed in, so we barely left the peace and quiet of the castle, the pool being too tempting in the heat, and the local wildlife providing plenty of interest for our young ones. We barely scraped the surface of the wide range of entertainment provided in the apartment in terms of games, books and films. And the terrace makes the property particularly special - we ate almost every meal out there.
For days out we can recommend Castiglione del Lago on Lake Trasimeno - the tour of the castle offers spectacular views of the lake - and Montefalco, again offering amazing views of Umbrian valleys and mountains. But with the beauty, scenery and peace of Monte Lagello itself so tempting, you may be hard-pressed to tear yourself away.
We look forward to a return visit.
Monte Lagello was recommended to us as a perfect place to stay in order to discover the delights of central Italy and the charming towns and countryside of Umbria. What a gem this unique location turned out to be ! The apartment was clean, very well maintained and accurately described. It had every facility required; a spacious and really comfortable bedroom, a very well appointed kitchen, a large and attractive lounge and the star of the place, the lovely roof terrace.
The setting of the castle on the hill, surrounded by olive groves and with far reaching views over the beautiful Umbria countryside, was simply stunning. The swimming pool with its really comfy loungers was such a relaxing place, it took real determination to go back to the apartment to fix another couple of gin and tonics !
Anyone noting the need to drive on 'white roads' up to the castle should not fear. Our low slung Jaguar XK convertible passed the test with consummate ease ! Trips out were quite delightful. Daytime visits were made to Spello, Assisi and Perugia with delicious lunches taken in pretty open terraced restaurants. A visit to a local vineyard, the Cantina Monte Vibriano at Mercatello near Marciano was well worth the effort; a very interesting talk by the manager followed by wine tasting and the purchasing of wines, some of which even made it back to Devon !
A couple of evenings we ventured into Marciano to dine, again lovely food and great atmosphere, but the real joy was eating supper 'al fresco' on the terrace.at the apartment.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Tony and Julia's apartment at Monte Lagello and all its charms to our friends and relatives, it was just such a delight to stay there.
Our 5 night stay was all too brief but it turned to be the pinnacle of our 3 week and 3000 mile trip through the Benelux country, Germany, Austria, Italy and France. We will return !!
This was our second visit to Borgo Montelagello and it was certainly as good as the first time. The apartment itself is very comfortable with a spacious terrace that provides a great place to sit, eat and maybe have the odd drink! The castle itself has a lovely feel to it, with a clever integration of holiday apartments into the ancient structure. The swimming pool in the grounds of the castle is very inviting, especially during the warm Umbrian summer. The pool is spacious and kept very clean by Ilario the resident Caretaker If sitting by the pool, reading your latest book becomes too much, you can always stroll round the grounds of the castle and beyond, or stay for a game of ’Bocce (Italian boules/pétanque). The community room is a nice touch, particularly if you want to meet up somewhere indoors with a number of other people. Since our previous visit, the WiFi access has been improved significantly and is now available throughout the apartment, which is obviously very useful just to keep in touch, or of course to do a bit of work (not that we did!).
Venturing further afield takes you to small towns, the ones we visited this year being Castiglione del Lago, Bevagna and Montefalco, where we had lunch at l'Alchimista. In all of these places (and many others!), you can soak up the traditional feel of Umbria, or buy some local wine, cheese etc. On the subject of wine, there are of course many places where you can go to the actual vineyards and try/buy their products. We visited the vineyard at Il Ciocco, where the very pleasant owner sat with us and talked about the wines, as well as providing quite a few for us to try. Inevitably we bought several bottles, but that’s what it is all about.
On our last night we went to “Jazz in the Castle” at San Appolinare. Food and drink was available and the whole experience on a warm Umbrian evening was magical.
If you want a place to stay that’s a bit different, in beautiful surroundings and within easy reach of some very interesting and picturesque places, then book this apartment. The owners, Tony and Julia, are very helpful and I am sure will answer any questions that you have.
We found the apartment well equipped and well maintained. Part of an ancient castle, it commands spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, best enjoyed from the terrace by the beautiful pool. The apartment's roof terrace provides equally fabulous views as well as a quiet and shady place to enjoy lunch or sundowners. There is a good selection of excellent restaurants within easy driving distance and endless places of interest to visit during the day. We would recommend it highly as a relaxing spot from which to enjoy all that Umbria has to offer.
We know this area well from previous visits, but had never stayed in this apartment before. There were four of us in our party and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The apartment is extremely well equipped and comfortable and sitting and eating out on the roof terrace was a joy. The kitchen is compact but easy to use and the dishwasher is a bonus!
There are some wonderful places to visit nearby (Assissi, Orvieto, Perugia) so there is always a lot to do, and if you're feeling lazy a day at the pool is hard to beat. The nearest restaurant, Val Verde, is just a few minutes drive away and is very welcoming with a good local menu. This is a favourite holiday destination for us and one which we have already recommended to family and friends!
Set in the rolling Umbrian hills, Monte Lagello is perfectly located for exploring the lovely art and architecture of the ancient hilltowns. Perugia, capital of Umbria is just 30 minutes away, Assisi, Orvieto and Todi less than 1 hour. Further afield famous towns and cities such as Florence, Siena, Gubbio, Spello and Rome can each be visited in a day. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, picnicking and mountain-biking and there is horse riding and golf available locally. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports at nearby Lake Trasimeno. For shopping Marsciano is only 20 mins away, where there are all amenities and a railway station. Locally the pretty village of Spina has a supermarket, butchers, bank, pharmacy and cantina for Umbrian wine. There are many excellent local restaurants and everywhere there are cafes with outdoor terraces to sit and watch the world go by. Access is easy with Rome airports 2 hours away and Ryanair now fly to Perugia.
