You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, body boarding and snorkeling....We have the boogie boards!!

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing opportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries and world class restaurants.

Lokilani is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park. A memorable drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast offers breathtaking views of historic Waipio Valley. This area is also home to Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii's most famous. You'll see deep water-carved gulches and valleys, thick with tropical foliage. Stop and tour gardens full of exotic plants and orchids.

For adventure of a higher nature, the 13,700 foot summit of Mauna Kea provides dramatic scenery and an unforgettable visitor experience. The W. M. Keck Observatory provides a visitor’s gallery with exhibits describing astronomy research and star gazing.

A Different Slice of the Big Island

  • 4 of 5

The property was very comfortable and and had a welcome feel. The round house design was very appealing and comfortably done. The landscaping really gave the feeling of country living and the views offered a pleasant change from Kona and South Kona. The big island is so diverse. This was a chance to explore the Kohala coast and to take the high road to Hawi through the green pasture lands and experience the winds. Parker Ranch and Waimea have a totally different feel that the tourist areas of Kona and Waikaloa. Waking up in the morning there are great views of Mona Loa and Mona Kea before the clods start to form. Great location with just a short drive to the Hapuna Beach and beach 69. The only drawback is that when the wind comes up it can blow for several days with out let up.

Our stay at Lokilani

  • 5 of 5

Ideally situated on two organic farming acres, this unit is one of four. Let me say right away that this is not a compact group of condos, each unit has seclusion and separation and felt very private. We had family over and used the kitchen to prepare simple meals with local ingredients we picked up at the Waimea farmers market. The kitchen can support four easily, and the hot plate is high tech efficiency, part of the ethos of the owners Matt and Rose. The Lokilani has two showers. Indoor and outdoor showers both felt designed around the Hawaiian spirit of simplicity and comfort. We did not use the decadent bath tub, but we were on the go every day we stayed at Lokilani. We hit the sights of Kohala, the volcano (watched molten lava flow directly into the sea), the beaches of south Kohala and saw family in Waimea, about 10 minutes away. Definitely cooler than the beach fronts (a good thing) and dryer than Waimea (a good thing for tourist), the location is great. Close to the major routes, yet itself secluded we found ourselves able to hike, or snorkel every day except the full day it takes to do the volcano. We were greeted with a basket of fruit from the farm upon our arrival and we were treated to a display of stars at night like I have not seen in a real long time. We feel everything was as advertised and we were not disappointed in any aspect of our stay.

Owner's Response: Hello Ron, Rose and I are very happy you enjoyed your stay at Lokilani and took advantage of all that we strive to offer our guests.....comfort, privacy and a real spirit of Hawaiian culture and Aloha. We chose this location for exactly the reasons you listed...close to the best Kohala Coast beaches on the sunny and dry side of Waimea Town. We experience real privacy and serenity but not inconvenienced. We love the state of the art induction cookers so much we have one in our own kitchen. Thank you again for the opportunity to be your hosts while you visited Hawaii Island. You will always be welcome guests and we hope to see you on another visit. Aloha and Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

You MUST rent this place!

  • 5 of 5

This unit is perfect! My wife and I travle quite a bit and use VRBO regularly. If you are going to the Big Island this is THE unit to rent. The location is ideal. It is within 10 munites of Waimea (restaurants, grocery, etc.) yet far enough away to feel like you are miles from everywhere (star lit sky, wildlife, fruit trees, etc.). It is located on the dry side of the island. We were able to sleep with the windows open and enjoy the cool, dry nights; perfect sleeping conditions. We were awakened each morning by the singing birds. As for the unit itself, it is gorgeous. They did not miss a single detail. The photographs do not do it justice. It was also spotlessly clean when we arrived. Lastly, Matt (the owner) greeted us upon arrival even though it was almost 9:00 PM. He also brought us fruit (lemons, oranges and bananas) from his trees twice during our stay. How cool is that? The ONLY downside was that the mangoes were out of season; I don't guess I can hold that against him. I literally have nothing negative to say about the rental. We will absolutely stay at this location again. Thanks Matt. We loved our 10 nights at Lokilani!

Owner's Response: Hi Charlie, So happy that you enjoyed your stay at Lokilani and all the reasons we love it here......great weather, clear skies and a perfect location away from it all but close enough to the best beaches and beautiful Waimea Town. I was happy to share the organic fruits. Sorry about the'll have to come back.... we'll be loaded with them soon. We take a lot of pride in keeping Lokilani clean and inviting and we thank you for leaving it extremely tidy when you departed. I hope you will be our guests again when you visit Hawaii Island. Tranquil Retreat for Exploring the Island

  • 5 of 5

I spent 5 nights at Hale Lokilani as a solo traveler in celebration of turning 50. The property is peaceful and beautiful and the location at 1700' is perfect for the sound of chirping birds, cool breezes and amazing night time star gazing. You are 10 minutes to beautiful beaches and 10 minutes to the town of Waimea which has some casual places to eat (Hawaiian Style Café for breakfast and Pau for lunch/dinner). Lokilani is very clean, simply designed, has nice natural light, and is quiet and relaxing... and the tile/stone shower and tub are a wonderful place to rejuvenate after a day of exploring the island. I ate out a lot being single, but the kitchen is more than equipped to cook up something from the local store or farmer's market. You are within an hour of visiting some of the most amazing places - Polulu Beach, Waipio Valley, Umauma Falls, Kolekole Beach, Akaka Falls, Hilo, Mauna Kea... the north part of the island consists of many microclimates and diverse landscapes. I also enjoyed a great massage from Renee (Big Island native) who comes out to Lokilani to share her healing energy. Matt was a pleasure to converse with... and they are a text away for assistance... but they also leave you to your space. Lynette (Matt's sister) was super easy and pleasant in addressing the reservation and any questions. I'm blessed to have found this place for an adventurous and relaxing trip to the Big Island. There are other rental cottages on the property... but the landscaping provides privacy for each visitor... and I enjoyed the limited conversations I had with other travelers about their favorite experiences on the island. This is not a resort... and those are not for me... instead, it is a serene place lovingly created by Matt & Rose for those who want to explore the island in a setting that is as close to natural as possible while still enjoying some luxuries.

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
