The Lokilani Hale is located on the dry and sunny side of Waimea (Kamuela). Our peaceful, two acre retreat is ideally situated 5 miles up from the best Kohala Beaches and 5 miles down from quaint Waimea Town.

There is a fully equipped kitchen and indoor dining area or the option of cooking outdoors on the gas BBQ and Al fresco dining on the lanai.

A comfortable queen size bed is adorned with luxurious linens.

A flat screen television is provided in the living area and there is complimentary WiFi.

Enjoy the luxurious spa bathroom complete with copper soaking tub for two and private garden lanai.

There is also a private outdoor shower garden to enjoy after the beach or under the stars.

The Kohala mountain views are enhanced by the mild temperature our 1700' elevation provides. This private hale is a serene and romantic honeymoon hide-a-way and perfect home base for Island exploration.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. Tranquil Retreat for Exploring the Island

I spent 5 nights at Hale Lokilani as a solo traveler in celebration of turning 50. The property is peaceful and beautiful and the location at 1700' is perfect for the sound of chirping birds, cool breezes and amazing night time star gazing. You are 10 minutes to beautiful beaches and 10 minutes to the town of Waimea which has some casual places to eat (Hawaiian Style Café for breakfast and Pau for lunch/dinner). Lokilani is very clean, simply designed, has nice natural light, and is quiet and relaxing... and the tile/stone shower and tub are a wonderful place to rejuvenate after a day of exploring the island. I ate out a lot being single, but the kitchen is more than equipped to cook up something from the local store or farmer's market. You are within an hour of visiting some of the most amazing places - Polulu Beach, Waipio Valley, Umauma Falls, Kolekole Beach, Akaka Falls, Hilo, Mauna Kea... the north part of the island consists of many microclimates and diverse landscapes. I also enjoyed a great massage from Renee (Big Island native) who comes out to Lokilani to share her healing energy. Matt was a pleasure to converse with... and they are a text away for assistance... but they also leave you to your space. Lynette (Matt's sister) was super easy and pleasant in addressing the reservation and any questions. I'm blessed to have found this place for an adventurous and relaxing trip to the Big Island. There are other rental cottages on the property... but the landscaping provides privacy for each visitor... and I enjoyed the limited conversations I had with other travelers about their favorite experiences on the island. This is not a resort... and those are not for me... instead, it is a serene place lovingly created by Matt & Rose for those who want to explore the island in a setting that is as close to natural as possible while still enjoying some luxuries.

Present Description Needs some Revisions

We have successfully rented from this website on many occasions. Once again we relied on the owner's description was well renter reviews. Lokilani is listed as a 1 Bedroom 1 Bath house or cottage. We were not happy to discover it is actually only a large bedroom and large bath/dressing room with no living room. Not comfortable to entertain guests in bedroom. The "fully equipped kitchen" had no stove or oven as listed - only a toaster oven, couple of hot plates, one fry pan, one pot. This 2 acre parcel in fact has 4 rental units as well as owner unit sandwiched between 2 of rentals. I believe the entire listing should be more accurate.

I do not wish to take away from all positive comments by others regarding the owner Matt and his sharing of lovely organic produce.

Owner's Response: I am really shocked at this review. We have had 33 reviews from previous guests. Twenty four are 5 star and nine are 4 star. This is the first time we have received anything less. First and foremost the description and photos are absolutely accurate! With regards to the kitchen, you were sent photos of the newly remodeled space. It clearly shows in those pictures a large convection/toaster oven and a state of the art double burner induction cook top. The pictures also show a full size refrigerator and service ware. While the pots and pans and prep tools are in a cabinet and not in the pictures…..we provide more than one pot and one pan. In addition to the indoor kitchen there is a gas BBQ on the lanai. With numerous farmers markets in the area we know our guests will be preparing delicious meals from local products and we supply the tools. I’m sorry you didn’t feel the space adequate for entertaining guests but you and your husband were the guests of this double occupancy unit. There is ample space on the lanai for more than 2 guests. Yes our beautiful 2 acre retreat has four vacation rentals. Each one is very private, quiet and serene. In fact Sally, when you first inquired about Lokilani you mentioned in your email that you had a lot of family coming to the Island and asked if we had additional accommodations for them. Our home is not just “sandwiched” between two of the rentals. It was architecturally designed with much care to compliment the other units. Because we live on the property we are able to provide service to our guests when needed. Because all the units have private entries and outdoor spaces everyone enjoys an abundance of privacy. I am happy you enjoyed the complimentary organic fruits and eggs I provided while you were here. We like to share with all of our guests. As Sally has said, she relies on the owners descriptions as well as posted reviews when deciding on a vacation rental. I can confidently say that the description of Lokilani and all of our rentals is accurate. The Lokilani is a beautiful, private and quiet retreat that offers all the amenities needed for a short visit or an extended stay. Inside and outside we strive to reflect our love of Hawaii and this property and find much joy in sharing with our guests. Perfect Home in the Perfect Location

I can't say enough great things about this place it was clean on a beautiful property in the perfect location.

I absolutely loved this house the bed was comfortable and felt like home the bathroom was luxurious specially with the copper soaker tub in the middle of the huge bathroom.

The location is in the perfect spot close to the best beaches the island has to offer an easy trip into Kona as well as to Hilo. We spent almost 2 weeks and made many trips to Kona as well as Hilo.

Waimea is a beautiful town with lots to offer a great brewhouse exceptional restaurants fabulous farmers market. I fell in love with this town during my visit and found myself often talking about retiring here

Thank you for the exceptional hospitality during our stay if we visit again we would definitely stay here again hands-down

Very nice!

The condo is very quiet and very well equipped. It is located in a very quiet area with a lot of nature around. Matthew is very helpful and friendly. It's not far to the beach; quiet and secluded beaches can be reached very quickly with a rental car. Waimea is a nice quiet town and the weather there is perfect. Contact to the owner is perfect by email and we found everything as described. German Translation: Die Wohnung ist sehr ruhig und sehr gut ausgestattet. Es liegt in einer sehr ruhigen Umgebung mit viel Natur drumherum. Matthew ist sehr hilfsbereit und freundlich. Es ist nicht weit zum Strand; ruhige und einsame Strände kann sehr schnell mit einem Mietwagen erreichen. Waimea ist eine schöne, ruhige Stadt und das Wetter ist perfekt. Kontakt zum Eigentümer war völlig problemlos per E-Mail und wir fanden alles wie beschrieben vor.

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
