We are a Dutch family with 3 teenage children. We have been traveling Italy all our lives. In 2000 our dream to build our own place in Italy became true. In 2006 we decided to move there with our small children for a sabatical year. One year became almost 7 years. We lived and worked in the area. In this period we made this house and the garden into a perfect family house that we enjoyed so much. For family reasons we moved back to Holland. We still spend our holidays in Civezza. I have been so inspired by the life and taste of Liguria that I am now writing a cooking book with Ligurian recipes.
Marlies purchased this villa in 2000
We fell in love immediately with Imperia and its unique green surroundings, so close to the mediterranen sea. We did not expect this area near the French Riviera to be this autentic. We searched for about a year to find the perfect land plot: quiet, near the sea a lively village and with good views. Here we could build a house as we liked it with large roofed terraces and lots of light among beautiful very old olive trees.
What we still enjoy are the views from almost every part of house:
The sea views from the kitchen table and outside from the portico. In the summer you see the cruise ships passing by. The sunsets are really nice and with full moon you see the sea glittering. On clear days you can even see Corsica!
We can spend hours on the terrace eating, reading or just relaxing. We often cancel our plans to go out, because the ambiance makes us want to stay.
From the living room, the studio and the terraces around the house we enjoyed the combination of olive trees, natural stone walls and the sea. From all our bed rooms you step out on the terrace and the green grass. On this level you also find the swimming pool. Most days in summer we started with a quick dive. Furthermore we are very blessed with our neighbors Maurizio and Angela. They run an agriturismo, which means that they serve food mostly from their farm. Angela is a fantastic cook who serves the ligurian specialties: la cucina della mamma. Healthy, tasteful and for a very reasonable price. We often said to each other that this one the best things of our choice for this spot. You can walk there so you don't have to drive. I also enjoy walking around our olive groves, enjoy the flowers in autumn and spring and the sea views from every corner.
The area is famous for its superb olive oil. You can taste and buy is at the agriturismo (eating at the farmers house), most restaurants or at the olive museum in Imperia. The sandy beaches of San Lorenzo and Imperia are serviced by bars and restaurants and sport activities (in summer). All year round you can do bike tours along the sea. From San Lorenzo to Bordighera/Ospedaletti you will find the longest cycle track along the coast in Europe. (24 km) Don't forget to stop in Sanremo. On the track you can stop in medieval villages for an aperitivo, a typical Ligurian lunch or a swim at a remote beach.
Beyond Imperia is one of the areas jewels the town of Cervo with its gorgeous Baroque church of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist) high on the hilltop. From the house you can start your hiking tours and find lots of wild flowers and herbs and enjoy the stunning sea views on the tops.
