About Jeanette Gretsch

The Smith Family consists of Mamaw and Pampaw, owners of the property, and their 4 daughters and their families. There are a total of 10 grandchildren. Green Cove Cottage was purchased as a place where the family can get together and get away from it all.

Jeanette Gretsch purchased this house in 2014

Why Jeanette Gretsch chose Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

The eldest Smith daughter lives in Raleigh. The rest of the family loves visiting her because North Carolina is so gorgeous and green and not too hot (they mostly live in Texas, where it is too hot) and has stunning fall colors, actual snow, and beautiful clean running water. When contemplating a place for everyone to get together, it was unanimous that it should be this part of the world, and the Creeper Trail was the final attraction.

What makes this house unique

It's right on the Creeper trail for easy biking and walking for the whole family, and only 3 miles down the trail it crosses the Appalachian trail for the more adventurous. The quiet and restfulness of the location are unparalleled. The stars are magnificent at night. And the views from the top of the ridge are breathtaking. Plus there is a wonderful hill perfect for sledding right next to the house.

Another great year of biking on the Creeper Trail!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time staying at this property. It will not be the last. You cannot beat the location right on the trail. We left from the house and enjoyed a gorgeous trip down to Damascus. The kids played at the park. The family enjoyed ice cream in town. We traveled back to the house and grilled out. The evening ended with a campfire complete with s'mores. The house and location lack for nothing. The entire family agrees this must remain a yearly tradition. Our youngest cried when it was time to leave. It is a perfect way to relax and unwind in an outdoor setting. Everyone appreciates this, young and old. I hope this house will remain available for years to come.

So much space & just steps from the VA Creeper Trail!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a wonderful stay at the Green Cove Cottage. It was spacious and had everything we needed. The property was beautiful and just steps from the creeper trail! We've never rented a house before and this was a wonderful first experience. It was so nice to have a place all to ourselves instead of cramming into a hotel room. Our boys loved exploring the property. The owners were helpful, quick to respond and provided us with all the information we needed before our stay. We'd definitely rent this property again!

Cozy cottage escape with family

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! The setting is so serene and quiet. We LOVED the lack of high speed internet! Our 3 teens were forced to interact with us 😊 So convenient to the Trail. Excellent movie selection, well stocked kitchen, fabulous views, big fire pit. We hope to return some day! Thanks, Polly and Jay Burrows
