Hop on a bike and join the Creeper Trail at the end of the driveway. Located between mile marker 29 and 30, Green Cove Cottage sits on 23 beautiful acres of meadow, forest and Christmas tree farm. Walk up on the ridge for a beautiful 360 degree view of Green Cove and the Jefferson National Forest. Sit on the front porch swing or rocking chairs to glimpse the bikers through the trees or relax on the back patio and gaze up at the hills.
For extra accommodation, there is a 1 bed/1bath granny flat over the garage about 50 yards from the main house which is listed separately, property # 3877695
The Smith Family consists of Mamaw and Pampaw, owners of the property, and their 4 daughters and their families. There are a total of 10 grandchildren. Green Cove Cottage was purchased as a place where the family can get together and get away from it all.
Jeanette Gretsch purchased this house in 2014
The eldest Smith daughter lives in Raleigh. The rest of the family loves visiting her because North Carolina is so gorgeous and green and not too hot (they mostly live in Texas, where it is too hot) and has stunning fall colors, actual snow, and beautiful clean running water. When contemplating a place for everyone to get together, it was unanimous that it should be this part of the world, and the Creeper Trail was the final attraction.
It's right on the Creeper trail for easy biking and walking for the whole family, and only 3 miles down the trail it crosses the Appalachian trail for the more adventurous. The quiet and restfulness of the location are unparalleled. The stars are magnificent at night. And the views from the top of the ridge are breathtaking. Plus there is a wonderful hill perfect for sledding right next to the house.
Great place to spend a family weekend together. The house was larger than I expected and a nice surprise. Everything you would need was available and very organized and clean. Will be staying here again in the future.
Very clean, really nice home with all the necessary amenities and I personally enjoyed no cell service for our 2 days!
This is the second time we've biked the Creeper Trail. The first time we stayed at the Biker's Loft. We had such a great time that we came back this year with more of our family and stayed at the main house instead. Both places were clean and had everything we needed.
Hopefully we can make this an annual tradition. Children as young as 6 (5 last year), biked the trail themselves. Adults much older did as well. Three generations enjoying the same activity during the day and a fire pit with s'mores in the evening. Win, win for sure. We can't wait to return.
The house was very clean when we arrived. The kitchen was perfectly stocked for cooking meals and lots of places for everyone to sleep. The owners have made lots of updates to this older home. The yard had lots of places to run and play and a super cute playhouse. We loved being right on the Virginia Creeper trail and would stop at the house for a snack or lunch on our way down. We hope to be back!
My friends and I spent a lovely weekend at this house. It is located on a beautiful piece of property literally steps away from the Creeper Trail. Everything was as pictured and clean when we arrived. The house is surprisingly large and is nicely divided for privacy within the house. The owner was easy to work with. My only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very spacious, welcoming, and clean. The setting is peaceful and beautiful, plus very convenient. They had everything we possibly needed and more. Definitively recommend booking Green Cove Cottage for a visit to Damascus.

3 miles down the trail from the Appalachian trail. Day hikes from the driveway are available to Grayson Highlands to see the feral ponies, pick wild blueberries, or simply enjoy the beauty of the mountains. Fly fishing is available in the river a few minutes walk from the front door. Make sure you check schedule the visit during one of the many festivals that celebrate the traditional music of the mountains.
