About Jeanette Gretsch

The Smith Family consists of Mamaw and Pampaw, owners of the property, and their 4 daughters and their families. There are a total of 10 grandchildren. Green Cove Cottage was purchased as a place where the family can get together and get away from it all.

Jeanette Gretsch purchased this house in 2014

Why Jeanette Gretsch chose Virginia

The eldest Smith daughter lives in Raleigh. The rest of the family loves visiting her because North Carolina is so gorgeous and green and not too hot (they mostly live in Texas, where it is too hot) and has stunning fall colors, actual snow, and beautiful clean running water. When contemplating a place for everyone to get together, it was unanimous that it should be this part of the world, and the Creeper Trail was the final attraction.

What makes this house unique

It's right on the Creeper trail for easy biking and walking for the whole family, and only 3 miles down the trail it crosses the Appalachian trail for the more adventurous. The quiet and restfulness of the location are unparalleled. The stars are magnificent at night. And the views from the top of the ridge are breathtaking. Plus there is a wonderful hill perfect for sledding right next to the house.

This was a wonderful place to spend a weekend with the family. Everything we needed was provided. It was a clean and beautiful property in a wonderful location right next to the rail trail.

Perfect mountain vacation getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth year in a row that we've rented this property, and we will certainly be back again next year. Access to the Creeper Trail for biking and hiking could not be better, and the proximity to local trout fishing streams is superb. The house is in great shape-- clean, comfortable, and able to accommodate a large family or small group. The yard is large in both front and back, and is perfect for BBQs, games, picking guitar, and just relaxing and enjoying the views from the back patio. We saw deer under the apple trees in back of the house, and renting the small loft apartment on the same property was a bonus, allowing us to expand our group of mountain bikers and fishermen enjoying a long weekend in the country. The Gretsch family are kind and helpful hosts, and made sure we had everything needed for a relaxing stay.

Delightful place!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a perfect weekend here with friends. The close proximity to good hiking trails and immediate access to the Virginia Creeper Trail made this home an ideal location. Everything is well maintained, and the owners are knowledgable about the community and surrounding area and offered helpful suggestions about places to visit, good bike rental companies, and other activities. The home was neat and clean, and we appreciated having multiple rooms with queen-sized beds so that all the couples could sleep comfortably. Additional sleeping arrangements were available, which we didn't end up needing. The grounds are beautiful and provide a restful place to relax and unwind. We highly recommend it!

Great place to spend a family weekend together. The house was larger than I expected and a nice surprise. Everything you would need was available and very organized and clean. Will be staying here again in the future.

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we've biked the Creeper Trail. The first time we stayed at the Biker's Loft. We had such a great time that we came back this year with more of our family and stayed at the main house instead. Both places were clean and had everything we needed.

Hopefully we can make this an annual tradition. Children as young as 6 (5 last year), biked the trail themselves. Adults much older did as well. Three generations enjoying the same activity during the day and a fire pit with s'mores in the evening. Win, win for sure. We can't wait to return.

3 miles down the trail from the Appalachian trail. Day hikes from the driveway are available to Grayson Highlands to see the feral ponies, pick wild blueberries, or simply enjoy the beauty of the mountains. Fly fishing is available in the river a few minutes walk from the front door and at Sarge's Pay Lake just down the road. Make sure you check schedule the visit during one of the many festivals that celebrate the traditional music of the mountains.
