Post Maria Update

Our local friend Abdon, a devout Christian, came by before Maria and said, “Maria is nice lady. She’ll be gentle to us”. And sure enough, she was a no-blow. There was very little wind, significantly less than a tropical storm, and only a small amount of intermittent rain. The skies were powerful - dark and gray with an incredible vibe but nothing really happened. We had a hectic couple of days preparation and then - a day off as we relaxed, talked with friends, ate, slept, and generally enjoyed.

Now that Maria’s gone we are full tilt unpacking the property and bringing things back to normal. We’re almost there. The plants were hit hardest by Irma – most of the vegetation without leaves, we lost some trees and many of the trees tilted over. Luckily all the palm trees on the beach survived. But we’ve been able to bring the trees back (mostly) to vertical and the nature is just incredible how its springing back to life. Within a few days of Irma the plants started sprouting new leaves! Now, over two weeks later, the entire property is the most psychedelic green with new life everywhere. The color and vibrancy of the nature is just amazing. How do they do it? How do they know? Hopefully another few weeks and we’ll hardly know a hurricane has passed through.

Our buildings were amazingly spared. We had quite a few minor damages: roof tiles and gutters a few roof leaks that need repair and a couple of spots of ceiling drywall replacement, repainting of sandblasted areas. but otherwise no major damage.

We have two extra ‘crews’ here on the property when the hurricane hit - we had a group of friends from Europe who were working on a book with us, and we had a construction crew who were doing a renovation. Both groups really jumped in both before and after Irma. We can’t thank you all enough. You helped us so well prepare and so quickly get back on our feet!

We have been without electricity, Internet and TV. There are still poles down in Long Bay and it seems they may be that way for a while. That said, we have generators so we have power and are comfortable. The city water has been on throughout so no issues there, as well as having a full cistern. Our normal high speed internet is down but the cell phone internet works fine, if a bit slow - good for emails and Skype but expensive if you want to stream movies. No TV but we’ve plenty of downloaded movies.

We had our first kiting session yesterday. Yeah! Windguru shows the winds coming back this week to the normal trades so… lots of fun between the work sessions. The beach is beautiful as always. The sands have shifted a lot and we have new dunes. There is still some seaweed to rake out but that’s almost gone now too. And there is NO ONE on the beach in Long Bay. We are so much enjoying the quiet.

This part of the island is generally fine. Grace Bay is up and running again - they have electricity and internet there, the stores are open, the ships are coming in and the super market is fully stocked. I’m proud of our island’s infrastructure and its ability to withstand even a category 5 hurricane. I’m guessing we were impacted less than other islands because we have a newer infrastructure, probably better built, and as an upscale island, better engineering, equipment, management, etc.

There are still plenty of people in the less affluent areas who are struggling. Many houses without roofs or some houses completely destroyed. Fortunately, Fortis the electrical company is giving priority to these areas and many are having power again. The churches have been incredibly helpful with distributing food and household basics. Samaritan Purse a charity has been very active a good place to donate funds for those that have asked us. There has been no ‘civil disobedience’ as far as we know

This is a very special moment on the island and we find it a rich experience to be here right now.

For those of you who are scheduled to come down or are thinking to do a last minute – you are welcome. Esencia is up and running - guests have been coming - the vibe is peaceful and beautiful. We look forward to see you soon or the near future.

Ritama and Kabir

About Ritama Davidson

Ritama Davidson purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Ritama Davidson chose Long Bay

We looked around the world for a place that was quiet and natural, yet easily connected to the wider world, and had a good infrastructure. Provo has all of that. And Long Bay is a stunning beach with gentle and warm waters, gorgeous colors and peaceful ambience.

What makes this cottage unique

There is something about jumping into this ocean that in 10 minutes so deeply relaxes us.

Don't mess with perfection...

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is AS advertised. Very private, very quiet and perfect for a couple looking for a getaway. You are on property with other rentals, but you feel like you have the entire world to yourself. I'm not going to say "well equipped", instead I'll say "fully equipped". Everything is there ready for you. The appliances are new and in working order, the dishes might be better than what I've got at home, the cooking pans, etc, they are better than what I've got at home and everything else is there - wine opener, salad spinner, knives, place mats, dish towels, you name it, it's there. Oh and another thing, expecting cheap hotel towels? Oh no, not with Ritama and co, may be the nicest bathroom towels I've ever seen in a rental. Beach towels provided too and not those crappy things you see at the resorts, these are _NICE_ beach towels. There was a washer/dryer unit that we didn't use although we did use the "solar" powered dryer on the side of the cottage.

Bottom line, this is a great place. I will be pushing hard to come back to TCI and stay here again, loved it.

We loved this place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the cottage and it was really nice, very secluded and just a great romantic little getaway amidst the flowering bushes. The cottage has it's own dedicated path, so no other guests even walk by while meandering about the grounds. The path to the beach is a short walk, about a minute and a half, through the nicely landscaped grounds. We were on the island on a very windy week, and it was indeed very windy on Long Bay Beach. It was windy on all other beaches we visited as well (probably 10 or so between Provo and other islands), but Long Bay Beach is a degree windier than most, hence the kite-boarding mecca status. (we are not kite boarders, but it does look fun and is cool to watch). The beach was beautiful with soft sand and clear waters. I should also note that despite the high winds on the beach, the bushes around the cottage and the other areas of the property (hot-tub and main pool) created an excellent barrier. Even on our extra windy week, it was calm and serene at the cottage and at the pool area, with only light breezes coming through the vegetation. The cottage bed is super comfortable and the place is kept in tip top shape. Very clean and welcoming. This is a great spot, with very easy access to the resorts and shopping at Grace Bay (5 minute drive). Thanks Ritama and Kabir !

Cozy cottage for two with a short walk to the beach. A Must for people who love kiteboarding.

  • 4 of 5

Upon arrival Ritama greeted us warmly and gave a tour of the property and layout of cottage. She is an excellent host and very helpful.

THe cottage is quite small but tastefully decorated and has updated appliances including vitamix blender and espresso machine. As many others have stated it's secluded outdoors by tall lush tropical landscaping which makes for a peaceful getaway. The outdoor pool, chairs and lounge area is a wonderful spot to relax and soak up the sun or read while in the shade of the pergola.

You can hear dogs barking occasionally..Goji & Seven are their names. Other guests can be heard thru the trees upon arrival and departure to their villas but can't be seen. But overall serene, cozy and romantic.

We don't kite board but apparently this is the perfect place. The winds were pretty gusty during our stay and the beach did get congested a couple days with kite boarders. There was a "traffic jam" of sorts one day as the guests awaited their turns. The beach in front of the villas is a popular launching spot. We did enjoy watching them but didn't like the fact that people left their kites right beside the chairs and umbrella areas we were sitting in. Maybe one day when we return we'll give the sport a try but will be more mindful of the other guests in the area. As you walk further down the beach you will find a more quiet area with very few people if any at all.

The water is crystal clear, has gentle waves, and just a small amount of seaweed that washes ashore. You will not find many seashells but will see a lot of conch shells and coral. Conch is served at most all restaurants in varies forms.

Ritama suggested the Turkish kebob restaurant on our first night and It did not disappoint. We had takeout from their twice. Service is very slow so be prepared for island time responses.

We ate at Cocovan food truck and enjoyed duck tacos and local Turks lager beer while sitting amongst the twinkling lights and beautiful landscaping. We also enjoyed the local coffee shop Lemon2go and the florist that shares the space. The meatball pizza at Bella Luna was quite good. We didn't enjoy the food or atmosphere of crackpot kitchen. Service was terrible and food not up to par. Ristorante Via Veneto was another disappointment after reading the great reviews we tried the lasagna and it was mushy and bland.

Bring plenty of sunscreen & bug repellent. The sun is very strong and we did have to fight with mosquitoes daily inside the cottage.

Highly recommended if you are seeking peaceful seclusion

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented The Cottage at Villa Esencia and have nothing but high praise for the accommodations, location, and owners. When we were searching for options for our trip our primary goal was seclusion, as we wanted a chance to relax and recharge in a private setting. Upon finding The Cottage it looked like everything we wanted, and the result held true to our expectations.

The thick vegetation around the house/pool provides optimal privacy, and the house it is situated in a way that others on the property don't pass by in a manner that you can see them. It's a short walk to the beach, and the beach which feels private as, in our experience, you essentially only see others staying on the property if they go at the same as you. There are plenty of chairs on the beach and the sand is as soft as you'll find. The water is aqua blue and you literally can walk a mile out in the water and still only have water just above the belly.

The Cottage is very new and comfortable. Lots of ceiling fans to keep the air moving and the size if perfect for two people. There is a lot of comfortable outdoor furniture to enjoy, and the small pool is private this this this house. I will note that because of the height of the vegetation, the pool only gets a couple of hours of direct sunlight, so the water is a bit cooler than the larger pool on the property (which you can also use). However, with the sun on the pool it was enough to enjoy. An air conditioner exists, but was used very little during our stay.

The owners (Ritama and Kabir) were very welcoming, but they let you enjoy the space in peace unless you need assistance. The restaurants, resorts, beach, and shops near Grace Bay are all a very short drive. If you want to pick up some food I suggest Graceway Gourmet. There is a full fridge, stove top, toaster, and coffee maker available. We ate most of our breakfasts and lunches at the house, and drove to Grace Bay area for dinners.

I think we had some unusually calm winds during our stay, but I think the beach would be just as comfortable even with the winds that draw kite surfers to the area. Our stay was during the last week in March.

Again, I would recommend this property very highly to anyone that wants some seclusion and doesn't require everything to be within walking distance.

Private paradise with the BEST property owners I've ever stayed with!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided on Villa Esencia to celebrate my 50th birthday and it was the best decision we could have made. We were greeted by Ritama who showed my wife around the property as I unloaded our car. She gave us the grand tour of our vacation home and all the bells and whistles of this gorgeous property. Everything inside the cottage was practically brand new with top of the line appliances and all the privacy we could ever ask for. The private pool was a perfect addition to this cottage. Long Bay beach was a short walk away through lush gardens full of flowers and plants, humming birds and sunshine. Long Bay Beach is a mecca for kite boarders so we were treated to a lot of entertainment while at the beach. We had a small issue with the water on day two and the very next day it was fixed! We did not feel like renters, Ritama made us feel like family. If you are looking for a perfect place for sun, sand, privacy and the BEST owners you will ever rent from, PLEASE book here. I will be back just so that I can talk to Ritama more. She really is an AMAZING person!! Thanks for ALL you did for Janet and I. :-)

Heavenly getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week in this wonderful garden cottage and could not be happier with our choice. While long bay is best for kitesurfing and less so for swimming, other beaches are just minutes away, as are restaurants and the grocery. Grace Bay is beautiful but lacks the quiet and serenity of this property. We enjoy dense jungle foliage and the garden around the cottage and pool have brought hours of happiness. I recommend the cottage highly.
