Tranquil and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful spacious home that easily accommodated our family of 5 adults and 3 kids. It was a great place to base out of for the various coastal towns we visited daily. However, we could have very easily lazed the day away and hung out at the house and been just fine. The backyard is great for games and hanging out, fishing off the rocks, or playing in the water. The views are amazing. Bring insect repellant because the state bird of Maine, the mosquito, is prolific in the area.

Beautiful site and home

  • 4 of 5

Overall a great home to rent. The house get 5 stars! The washing machine was fussy and seemed to not work well, and one downstairs bedroom was a bit stuffy. Be ready to use stairs since the hous is on 3 floors (as described). Beautiful wood work, clean and much nicer than the average rental. Worth 5 stars if the washer behaved better.

The house is just great, spent a week and had a great time! Nicely placed in the state so one can travel both directions easily. Would tell everyone to take advantage of this place.

Lovely, quiet home on the water

  • 5 of 5

Five friends each had their own bedroom in this home with so many architectural details. We enjoyed sunrise and sunset at the waterfront while we watched the locals tend to their lobster pots. The home is located in a quiet community, but has access to all of the tourist spots along the coast of Maine. We thoroughly enjoyed this location, and would recommend this home to others.

Great location...a true Maine vacation experience

  • 5 of 5

First and foremost the location of the house was prime. The amazing breeze coming off the bay and the nice porch on the back of the house was always nice to sit at, day and night. The kids loved the rock, catching hermit crabs, lobster, and crab right off the rock for fun.

The house was nicely equipped with all that was required, including the lobstah pot! The owners were nice and responsive. Books and information was available for all local places of interest, especially the location of the lobstah guys....(which are not there on Sun, or past ~5pm during the week)

Some minor items were discovered with appliances, but the owner addressed as needed. The beds were ok, and we felt two of the beds needed new mattresses, as there were large lumps in the middle of the bed. The deck furniture was comfortable, although worn, and could be replaced. Furthermore the finishing touches I the house, wood floor in the bottom level floor, molding in numerous places in the kitchen, and what looked like a removed fireplace in the floor of the dining room need to be finished properly. We spent a decent amount of money and we expected it to be finished.

Although these items were noted, it didn't take away from our great vacation. We would do it again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review and for your useful comments. It is always wonderful to hear how much our guests enjoy their stay. In response to your comments - regarding the mattresses, three of the mattresses are new high quality selections replaced within the past two years. We will certainly evaluate the condition of all other mattresses during our annual off-season maintenance and enhancement program scheduled to begin in October. As for the Pottery Barn deck furniture, all of the cushions are scheduled for replacement this fall. Concerning the lower level woodwork, you actually caught us in the middle of a refinishing project that was anticipated to be complete by the start of the 2016 rental season. More specifically, the dining room and kitchen woodwork to which you refer was prepped in the spring to be stained with non-pigmented water-based dyes and finished with natural shellac (all wood finishing in this home is done only with natural “old-world” products and techniques). Unfortunately, the rental season came upon us before we could apply the final treatments, none of which are quick and easy and all of which are quite odorous. Therefore, unfortunately, we had to re-schedule the finish to a time when lingering odors would not be intrusive to our guests. The project will be complete before the next rental season. Finally, what looked to you like a “removed fireplace” in the basement is actually a hearth space that has been prepared in anticipation of a future fireplace intended for the dining room. You are most welcome to come back and "do it again" to see how things have progressed!

Clean, comfortable, incredible views and outdoor space

  • 4 of 5

Overall we had a wonderful time at this house—the very best part about it is the incredible view out the back. We were there with our small kids, and they delighted in observing the tides, scrambling all over the giant rock in the water at low tide, tossing pebbles in the water, taking out kayaks, swimming and splashing, and also just running around the lawn and surrounding woods. The house itself is really quite nice, and was comfortable and well appointed for the most part. The kitchen is on the compact side, and not super well equipped if you're going to be making big meals for a crowd, and the layout of the house is also kind of odd - for instance, the living room has no direct stairs to the backyard, so we hardly used it at all, and ended up mostly in the tight kitchen and low ceilinged dining room, which were less lovely places to hang out indoors. The bedrooms are on the small side, and two are in the lower floor also with low ceilings and little light, so I'd say not great for claustrophobes. All in all though, the outdoor space made it completely worthwhile, and it fit us all without feeling like we were stepping on each others toes. Only as we were leaving did a neighbor mention that there's a couple mile hiking trail right outside, to the left if you're facing the water. (We might have missed that in the otherwise helpful welcome binder.)

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Addressing your comments regarding room size and ceiling height, we can only imagine that your dissatisfaction with the first floor level of the home must relate to the cozy and comfortable feel in this space. The rooms are actually not small with the Serenity Blue Bedroom measuring 14 x 18’, the Roman Romance Bedroom at 8 x 16’, the dining room at 16 x 18’, and the kitchen in a space that measures 12 x 18 feet. Factually, all of the first level rooms, with the exception of the “Roman Romance” bedroom, have ceilings that are 7’9” in height, a nominal reduction to the more typical eight feet, but one that we feel adds measurably (and positively) to the intended “feel” of the rooms. In addition, these rooms also feature beamed ceilings and 4 ½” wide beautifully carved window and door trim, carefully selected design elements intended to make the lower level rooms “feel” small and cozy. We believe these deliberate design choices serve to nicely complement and contrast the very large and voluminous rooms on the second and third floors, all of which are a minimum of ten feet in ceiling height and many of which are quite dramatically vaulted to as much as 30 feet. The more-than-adequate kitchen is well-equipped and benefits from an efficient design that serves nicely in the preparation of large meals, as stated in reviews by several of our other guests. Finally, regarding the location of the second floor living room, it is actually quite accessible to the waterfront lawn by way of the center staircase. It is too bad that your family chose not to take more advantage of the living room with its beautiful and expansive view as it is a wonderful spot for large groups to gather.
