I'm an independent consultant and have the luxury of living and working nearly any place. Family circumstances have taken me away from my favorite place in the world - the Oakland Hills - but I come back every chance I get. This home is a reflection of my tastes and my travels and has been created with a great deal of thought and care. When I travel I prefer to stay in homes or apartments over hotels if I possibly can. I've tried to make my home in Oakland an ideal place for a vacation and at the same time be a 'home away from home' for my guests. Everyone who stays here feels that way.
Tina McGurk purchased this house in 1997
The Oakland Hills is one of the best places to live on the planet! And the close proximity to Montclair Village makes it heavenly. I love walking the trail behind the village, the friendly folks who live and work in Montclair and easy access to anywhere in the Bay Area. The street is a cul-de-sac which makes it quiet and I love my neighbors!
Montclair Village is known for its friendly family vibe and it is just a two block walk from my home. There you'll find great coffee shops, boutiques, fabulous restaurants and wonderful walking trails. You'll also have great access to San Francisco buses and the BART station is just five minutes away.
I had the pleasure of staying at Cabot House for the summer of 2015 from June through September. It was a beautiful two bedroom house in the hills with a beautiful garden in the front yard that the local hummingbirds found delightful. The beautiful views from the large kitchen, the dining room and the living room were of the town in Montclair. The house had every amenity that I could ask including a garage. The fireplace in the living room was a nice addition and would have been used if it got cold enough.
The block was peaceful and quiet. I would sit on the porch at night and bask in the warmth of it all. It even had an open deck on the second floor outside the bedroom. The wrought iron railings in the stairs were beautiful.
Being a recent implant to the area from NYC it made me feel more than welcome, I felt at home.
The place is so popular that the regular fall/winter guests had it booked or I'd still be there.
My husband and I have stayed at this great home a few times. You literally just need to bring a suitcase- the house is equipped with everything you need to be comfortable. Love the fireplace, wood from the yard was generously included and even has a washer and dryer. We spent Thanksgiving and Christmas at the house and it felt like home. We'll definitely be back!
We have rented this house for the past three winters, and we consider it our second home. The house is clean and comfortable. The living and dining rooms are generous. The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped, which is important for big foodies like us. We host an annual college reunion, and our guests are always impressed with the house. The two upstairs bedrooms are large; the bathroom is great. The neighborhood is quiet and very safe. Montclair village is a short walk away. The village hosts all the needed neighborhood services: two grocery stores -- you don't need to drive when you run out of milk or bread, -- two drug stores, numerous restaurants (including two excellent Mexican restaurants), several banks, a real, local donut shop, dry cleaning, Starbucks, Noah's Bagels, etc. There's also an excellent Farmer's market every Sunday morning. Great local produce and bakes goods! The owner is great to work with; she also has a very responsive, live-in caretaker in a separate, downstairs apartment. We always look forward to our annual stay here.
We have rented this Montclair village house for three winters now, and we consider it our second home. The home is clean and very comfortable. And it is a short walk into Montclair village with its two grocery stores; great for when you just forgot a quart of milk; you don't need to drive to pick it up. My husband and I spent 2 months here when we first moved to the area. It was absolutely fantastic. The house is fully stocked with everything you might need! Even your own garage. We honestly were able to live there for 2 months out of one suitcase and not miss a thing. Also, the house itself is so charming and welcoming. Nice future throughout, and really interesting art-- not like some rentals where the owners have left just the bare minimums... And although you are steps away from Montclair Village, and several other great areas (and around 25 minutes to SF, with no traffic), the house is perched on a hill, giving the wonderful feeling that you are tucked in the trees away from it all. Highly recommend for a family or couple looking to try somewhere new for a short while. Probably isnt best for very small children though.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! We were very sad to leave.
We had been looking for a temporary home for ~2 months while we were waiting to close escrow and finish renovations on our new home in Piedmont. The kids had started school and we needed a nearby location for easy commuting to their school and also to our new home. We found this rental to be the perfect solution. Tina (owner) and Meg (niece of owner that lives in the downstairs unit) were very helpful in getting us situated as we were new to the area. The home was the perfect size for our family of four (our kids shared a room; we used a blow up mattress as a second bed), and it was fully furnished --- down to the first rolls of TP, paper towel and tin foil etc. We cook a lot and we used all her appliances and cook & bakeware and found she had pretty much anything in that kitchen one could need, although the items weren't always necessarily the latest models. The bathrooms were pristine and the garage and driveway provided the parking we required. Our kids also enjoyed Meg's 2 cats --- Amadeus and Thomas Jefferson were often there to greet us when we returned from our day at work/school. The home is also very conveniently located (even more than I thought!) to local supermarkets, pharmacies, dry cleaners, tennis courts, even the Montclair railroad hiking/walking trail, all of which are just a 5-10 minute walk to the Montclair village. The home is also just a 3 minute drive to Route 13 which takes you to Berkeley or south to Hayward etc very quickly. Tina and Meg were very responsive if any issues came up. The photos accurately represent the home. Thank you!
Close to University of California Berkeley, lots of local hiking trails
