Bar Harbor Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 king bedroom suite, second bedroom, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps total of 3

'Thankful Cottage' is located in the Village of Bar Harbor near the Town Pier, Town Beach, historic Shore Path walk, and the Museum in the Streets self guided walking tour. Built before the Civil War, the cottage has been lovingly rehabilitated and features the perfect blend of nostalgia with modern amenities. The cottage has off street parking and is walkable to boating, shopping, dining and cultural activities. Bar Harbor is named for the 'bar' to Bar Island which forms the harbor. Bar Island, portrayed by David Maitland Armstrong in his late 1800's painting, 'The Bar, Bar Harbor', is visible from the cottage.

The top floor of the cottage is master suite with king bed, sitting room with water view, walk-in closet, full bath and deck with water view.

The first floor includes a modern kitchen, living area with gas fireplace, den with pull out twin bed and a second full bath.

Wonder why the cottage is named, 'Thankful'? We traced the deeds back to a woman named Thankful Rodick who in the mid-1800's lived in the cottage. While Bar Harbor is thankful that this little cottage has survived for 165+- years, we actually named her after the person Thankful. The cottage is on the Bar Harbor historic

properties list.

We hope you will be 'thankful' that you picked 'her' for your stay in downtown Bar Harbor. What could be better after a day of boating and hiking, followed by a gourmet dinner, than a walk home to your own historic cottage in the heart of Bar Harbor?

About Sherry Rasmussen

We, Sherry and Ivan Rasmussen, have been involved the ARTs in Bar Harbor since the early 1970's. We own galleries and artist studios on the Bar Harbor Waterfront near the cottage. Ivan, who was once Bar Harbor Harbormaster, has spent most of his life near the ocean in his native Oregon and now on Mount Desert Island which is home to Acadia National Park.

Growing up, Sherry's beach was Virginia Beach in her native state. She traveled extensively as an international flight attendant.

Though her travels took her to many beautiful destinations, she

says that Mt. Desert Island, home to Bar Harbor, is truly one of the world's great treasures...and Acadia's Sand Beach surrounded by mountains is now her beach.

Ivan captures the beauty of the island in his watercolors that he

sells in his own 'ART on West' and other galleries.

We live right in the Village of Bar Harbor which is one of Maine's most walkable communities. And just like many of our Thankful Cottage visitors, we walk or bike into Acadia National Park from our home. A free bus runs from mid-June to mid-October from the Village of Bar Harbor into Acadia National Park and to neighboring Villages. The Village of Bar Harbor is surrounded by Acadia National Park and the nearby Bar Island is just a short walk from the cottage. Did you know that the 'bar' across the 'harbor' to Bar Island is the reason for the town's name of Bar Harbor? You can see the 'bar' and Bar Island from the cottage.

We love to share our community and island with visitors from around the world. You check in for your week at our 'ART on West: Gallery. We are there to get you started on a perfect vacation.

Why Sherry Rasmussen chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Rare is the opportunity to rent an 1850's cottage in a perfect resort location. For your convenience there is private, off street parking and the amenities of the world renowned Village of Bar Harbor are all walkable.

Because the cottage rents Sunday to Sunday, it is a perfect honeymoon hideaway after a Saturday wedding. It has also become

a favorite for anniversary celebrations.

You will delight in the historic maps and collectibles that take you back to another era, yet you will enjoy the modern conveniences that make your stay enjoyable. Following the history of Bar Harbor, you can jump on the 'Museum in the Streets' free, self-guided walking tour at the near by Bar Harbor Club or other locations around town.

What makes this cottage unique

Location, location, location. The cottage is near the water and close to Bar Harbor's most upscale hotels with their fine restaurants. There are also many wonderful restaurants and galleries just a short walk away. Right near the cottage are a group of artist owned and run galleries and studios.

Come home after a busy day of shopping, hiking, and exploring to your own cozy cottage with gas fireplace.

Thankful Cottage - a wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Sherry and Ivan Rasmussen have restored this historic home into a delightful refuge. My sister and I agreed we had stepped into our own little home. Set back from West Street along the bustling harbor, Thankful Cottage is in a great location, giving guests access to everything Bar Harbor has to offer: You are in the midst of Acadia National Park -- able to enjoy the beauty of the water and the land.

We strongly recommend this as the perfect get away. We enjoyed walking around town, listening to the town band, eating fresh lobster, whale watching and sea kayaking. Sherry and Ivan provided plenty of information for us to experience Bar Harbor to the fullest, and they go out of the way to address every question or concern you may have. Though my sister and I traveled to Bar Harbor to visit family and spend time outside hiking and exploring the harbor, we are also avid fans of the Olympics. One of my former students was competing in Rio and Sherry made sure that the cable TV in the cottage was in tip top working order. We are most thankful for a wonderful week and have already signed-up to return next summer.

Thankful Cottage .....The Best

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Thankful Cottage. We wouldn't even venture to look anywhere else!!! This for us, is the ultimate stay. Right in the middle of beautiful Bar Harbor. Sherri and Ivan are most helpful and so down to earth friendly. Every morning, I, personally look forward to sunrise. I can just walk out the front door, across the street, and have numerous places to just watch the beauty. The backdrop of the harbor is breathtaking as well as my daily walk to Bar Island when the tide was out. We spent each day hiking in a different location. The Island Explorer bus depot is right up the street so we can ride for free to our hiking destinations. There is absolutely nothing negative about this little cottage. We will be coming back for as long as we are able, which we hope is a long long time. Thank you Sherri and Ivan for providing this perfect spot in our favorite vacation location. The cottage is clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. We LOVE Thankful.

Thankful Cottage - Bar Harbor, Main

  • 5 of 5

5 stars for sure. All we expected and more. Location allowed us to walk to every meal we wanted to eat, and we had our own private parking spot. Can't wait to go back. Love this cottage. Highly recommend it. Owners are great people and we enjoyed their company. My brother came up for a few days and he was able to use the downstairs room with a pull out couch bed as his bedroom, he even had his own bath. 10 minute walks to the most far away restaurant. We never drove our car to a single meal in a week. Everything in the cottage was as described and we loved coming home to it every night. We didn't cook there, but all the appliance were at our disposal, as was utensils, washer, dryer, tv, internet, etc. We have no complaints. The cottage is only about 5 miles from the entrance to Acadia, which is why we went to Maine to begin with. The park was so enjoyable, but also downtown Bar Harbor was a delight. Plenty to do and eat and everything only a couples of minutes away by foot. Please consider stay here or in their other 2 bedroom property which is right next store. We will consider renting that one next time as well so that we can bring a few more people.

Owner's Response: Wow...what a nice review of the 1850's cottage that is so loved by many from Bar Harbor and from away. This was a great family that was our pleasure to host. They came to hike Acadia so it gave us great joy to see the group walking with the three walking sticks that we provide for hikers!! We look forward to seeing them again.

A wonderful mix of the old and the new.

  • 5 of 5

Having been to Bar Harbor 20 some years ago, thix was the best relaxing vacation. Sherry made sure to keep you informed of things happening while we were in the area even before you arrived. E-mails and phone calls were always answered promptly. You could not want for anything once you arrived. Bring groceries and you are done. We have never stayed any place that was more prepared for what ever you wanted.

The location was perfect you never need to drive once you park. Busses to Acadia, Carrage Rides, Whale Watching are right at your door, and the sun sets are breathtaking.

We would definately recommend "Thankful Cottage" to any one and hope to visit again in the near future.

Thank you Sherry and Ivan for such a lovely place to call home for the week.

Lovely cottage in great location in Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

My wife and Elizabeth had a wonderful week in Thankful Cottage in Sept. It is a great combination of a period property from the 1800s coupled with modern interior with all facilities.

Sherry was very helpful and friendly during the booking process, before arrival and when we were there, and made everything very easy.

We were very fortunate with weather and spent most of our time hiking and biking. Acadia National Park is really stunning, and we had great weather. For dining out (if you want to take a break from cooking), we'd recommend Mache, Havana and Fathom - we found after our first night that reservation is a must during the busy period.

Would thoroughly recommend staying here, and would definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to come back to the area.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 15 month old daughter stayed for a week in August. It was wonderful being so close to town. You could walk everywhere! The cottage was perfect for us. Parking in front of house, in town location, & the roof top deck was great to watch the sunset. Just bring your groceries! Sherry was so lovely to work with. You can tell her and her husband took great care to think about every detail a person would need in their home.
