I live with my wife Arianne in Cíbola del Mar, across the road from the SURFING BEACH SAN MIGUEL, by the skirts of the city of Ensenada, 15 minutes from Rancho Bonito, and always ready to assist my guests in site.
Ricardo Olvera purchased this cabin in 1995
This property was part of the Rancho Bonito, founded and developed by my father and grandfather, who immigrated from California in 1950.
The most unique benefit and amenity of this place is its amazing and almost mistical dusk in front of the Pacific Ocean.
We really enjoyed our stay at Rancho Bonito. The view from the cabin was amazing, and it was a short trip to Ensenada where we could enjoy amazing surf, tacos, seafood, and (perhaps surprisingly) Mexican Craft beer along the ride, and still return to a serene setting for the evening.
Ricardo was very accommodating -- he met us at the toll booth and drove us to the cabin. We wanted to have more guests than the 8 specified, and he was happy to let us do so for an additional $25 pp/pn. There was ample room inside, but we brought tents and hammocks and felt very safe sleeping under the stars.
There are a few downsides to this place. The mile-long dirt road was quite manageable for our SUVs but would perhaps give a town car some trouble. Also, the water pressure is quite low and the electricity is spotty. The kitchen was fairly well equipped (Ricardo even left oil, which everyone always forgets!), but there were no bowls or a lighter to start the stove. Being somewhat accustomed to surfer hostel standards, we were well prepared and fully enjoyed our stay. I'd say it's a good rule of thumb when traveling in Baja to bring a long-stem lighter, a good knife or two, and a roll of duct tape wherever you go.
If you're looking for a five-star experience, look elsewhere. But, if you're happy to rough it a bit, I highly recommend Rancho Bonito.
Ricardo was quickly and politely responsive to calls and emails. He met us on the highway so we could follow him to the cabin. Arriving at the cabin, we were amazed at the unobstructed ocean views. Sunsets on the terrace were gorgeous. The location allowed us to enjoy both Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe wineries and restaurants.
The cabin was clean with adequate bedding and newly supplied kitchen utensils. It was rustic in that the water pressure was low and gets only slightly warm. Ricardo states the kitchen sink leak has been repaired. It was cold at night when we visited and the smoke from the fireplace came back into the cabin. This was the only source of heat.
If you enjoy adventure and can tolerate rustic touches, this is a special and unique place. We plan to return!
The cabin is 15 minutes away from SAN MIGUEL, the best SURFING BEACH of Baja. And also 15 minutes away from VALLE DE GUADALUPE, the famous wine country of Baja.
