The cottage is built 6 feet above ground on the front side (with 14 stairs up to the front door) and at ground level on the back side. It is all wood and glass with open beam construction. It’s tucked into mostly native forest of Hawaiian Ohia and Hapuu (Hawaii Tree Fern) that is glorious in the mountain sun. This little cottage has ten large picture windows to give it a beautiful, expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting room with an expansive outdoor view and a small bathroom with a tub/shower. There is an open veranda part way around the cottage as well as a back deck to relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The entire cottage is about 850 sq. ft. Very comfortable and spacious for two people
There are lots of nature walking trails and hiking trails in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with one to the summit of Mauna Loa Volcano at almost 14000 feet - a rigorous 3 day backpacking trip. When the volcano is active, you can hike to see lava flowing inland or into the ocean. When visiting you should be prepared for hot and cold and dry and wet.

This is our own retreat cottage. We love it. We hope you'll enjoy it and care for it as we do. It is a place for quiet contemplation and meditative retreat with a feeling of serenity both inside and outside.
Whether you decide to visit with us or not,

We use vrbo rentals a great deal for our travels and vacations, and I have to say that this property is by far the best provisioned unit that we have ever stayed in and perhaps one of the most charming units we have experienced.
The cottage is situated in the Mauna Loa Estates, a small sub-division of Volcano village and deep in the verdant fern forest. It is a short 2 minute drive into the village for great dining, and is a mere 5 minutes from the Volcanoes Park where you can spend days. Keaau is about 20 minutes drive. It’s a great location. There are no expansive views because you’re surrounded by lush rainforest. The days are filled with bird song and the night with the sound of coqui frogs.
Candice and Richard have built so much personality into this property. It is well decorated and is full of small details to make your stay all the more memorable. We loved it here. They have thought of everything. Some tips so that you don’t make the same mistakes we made: don’t bother buying and bringing bottled water. The tap water is filtered, and then filtered again. The coffee, honey and sugar that they provide is delicious and not cheap junk. They have plenty of paper product, cling wrap, ziplock bags and plastic cutlery so that preparing picnic lunches while you hike in the park is a breeze. Furthermore, we appreciated the wall safe and security system for the cottage while we were away hiking each day – it meant that we didn’t have to carry valuables with us. There are flashlights, gloves for hiking on the Pali and a pair of walking poles. At 4,000' elevation it can get cold at night, so there are heaters and even slippers available. Like I said, they have thought of everything.
Of particular note, Candice and Richard have their own guide book available for you to read in the cottage. It is full of step by step guidance for hiking and touring in the park. I will go so far as to say that their book is by far better than Doughty’s “Revealed” book. Take it with you while you drive the Chain of Craters road and use it to find all sorts of hidden gems on the trip.
If you are planning a stay in the Volcano area, then THIS is the place to stay if you’re looking for quaint charm and character, peace and quiet, and a chance to reconnect with nature.
Excellent home with all the comfort needed after a day or exploring. Local restaurants are superb as is the experience of walking on active volcano lava.
We enjoyed the quiet beginning to our days, drinking coffee on the deck while listening to bird song. The home was bright, comfortable, clean, and well ordered. Prior to our arrival, our hosts took a personal interest in ensuring that we had the necessary information about the house and the attractions in the Volcano area. We especially enjoyed the evening hike to the lava-viewing Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent. Couldn't have asked for more.
This property was in a beautiful location, surrounded by rainforest. Fully equipped and very quiet and cozy with a gas fireplace for heat whenever needed. Very close to Volcano National Park this is an ideal place for comfort and quiet.
Lovely, well-maintained and spotlessly clean property in lush , private setting. Timely, excellent communication from owners. Perfect easy 5 minute drive from Volcano Park.
I had more cottage time than I had originally intended because of the rough weather, but this was a lovely place to take shelter! I especially enjoyed the forest setting and the lovely picture window out back. Lots of nice touches in the cottage too.
