Poynton Lodge sits on 7 secluded acres near Smith Point (at the mouth of the Potomac River on Chesapeake Bay). Built in the 1930's by noted Virginia author James Branch Cabell, this five bedroom waterfront cottage was beautifully renovated in 2008. The cottage was designed to embrace the sights and sounds of the Bay. Wake to the putt-putt of a waterman's boat, heading to the crab pots. Enjoy your morning coffee on the front deck. Serve breakfast al fresco at the picnic table on the 45' long screened porch. Settle into an Adirondack chair to savor a good book. Take a picnic lunch down to beach. Kayak down to the bird sanctuary. Shower in the outdoor shower. Try your hand at bocce or croquet. Toast the sunset at the water's edge. Dine on the long porch or, if the temperature has dropped, in front of a fire in the dining room. Roast marshmallows over a bonfire on the beach. Retire to your comfortable bed, drop off to the sound of lapping water.
Amusements: We have a collection of beautiful jigsaw puzzles and classic board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Clue and Risk), Yahtzee, Connect Four, and Battleship, Dominoes and Mexican Train, Set, poker chips, and enough decks of cards to play a giant game of Hearts.
We have Bocce and Croquet Sets, and a net that could be used for volleyball of badmitten, and enough space to have all three games going on simultaneously.
We have five single kayaks, and a large double sit-upon kayak you are welcome to use. We have life vests for four adults, but please supply life jackets for your young guests.
Dogs: Well-mannered dogs are welcome guests. (Due to owner allergies, we cannot accommodate cats.) We have a moveable pen, dog dishes, and various covers for furniture for your use. Our dog Simon likes to keep watch from the upstairs daybed. Our property is secluded but not fenced so dogs that tend to wander should be supervised. Guests are encouraged to treat their dogs with tick, flea and heartworm preventive before visiting. There is a security deposit of $100 per dog.
Local Attractions: Tour local vineyards. Discover the history of the 19th century fishing industry at the Fishermen's Museum in nearby Reedville and enjoy the charming Victorian mansions built by local sea captains on Main Street. Go antiquing in nearby Kilmarnock. Step back in time with a boat trip to Tangier or Smith Island, or join one of the local captains for an exciting day of fishing. Visit an 18th century architectural treasure, historic Christ Church designed by Chistopher Wren. Take a hike in Hughlett's Point Nature and visit Shiloh Schoolhouse.
When we bought Poynton Lodge as a weekend house, it was a funky summer cottage with a killer view and minimal amenities. We drove down from Washington DC most weekends from April to November. Renovation (in 2007) and retirement (2012) have made it possible for us to spend much more time at Poynton Lodge.
Phoebe Mix purchased this cottage in 1985
'Just one look, that's all it took.' From the first glimpse of the water as we walked around the house, we were hooked.
Opening all the windows to sounds of the waves lapping on the shore. Sitting with a cup of coffee on the front porch watching the sun rise. Following a pod of dolphins as they work their way up the river. Tracking soaring eagles as they wheel overhead. Paddling a kayak out to the fish traps. Settling into an Adirondack chair with a good book.
This is our third, multigenerational vacation at Poynton Lodge. We enjoy this property so much and we have become so comfortable here, like snuggling in a familiar chair when you go home again. We had lots of room for all of us. My grandsons got to see stars, moon jellies, dolphins, and eagles. We played board games and croquet, went kayaking and played badminton, and ended the day with scrumptious meals using fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden. Cocktails at sunset and coffee with the sunrise were fabulous! And this year we had a great rainstorm with thunder and lightning across the water, followed by wonderful sea breezes and sunshine the rest of the week. Poynton Lodge is a great family vacation and this year we did some history based tourist ventures to Christ Church and Stratford Hall, both located on the northern neck on VA. It is a wonderful place and a good thing!
What a great time we had at this house. We went with my family, my mom and my husbands brothers family. The kids (all 7 of them) really had a blast, age range 5-19. It was so nice to see all the kids enjoying the outside and not sitting around the TV all day. They loved to explore the land and sea!
The garden was more than anyone could ever imagine! I'm not sure who enjoyed eating from it more, the adults or the kids.
Very well stocked kitchen we had every thing we could possibly need and then some, the house was clean and more then enough room for all of us.
Thank you for a wonderful time.
we were really there Aug 2014. I forgot to write a review and could not go back any further...
We just spent a week here on the Chesapeake Bay. It was the greatest! We had so much fun just hanging out in the beautiful surroundings. This place has everything. We kayaked, read, worked our annual puzzle, relaxed and took showers in the bamboo grove. The home itself is beautiful and there was always a breeze blowing through, but it was nice to have air conditioning if needed. The grounds are so well kept you feel like you have just arrived in an oasis. We are talking about going back next year. Our grown kids, nieces and nephews loved it as well. You will not be disappointed!
Our entire family, ages 3-69, had a super vacation at Poynton Lodge! Sun and sand, waves, bonfires, kayaks, croquet, and eagles every day. To our delight we had only one slightly stormy afternoon, which proved useful for game playing. We lived on the screened in porch for meals, conversations and game playing, not to mention staring at the beautiful bay. We enjoyed the garden with vegetables and herbs galore. The sunrise over the bay was breathtaking, followed by the busy hummingbirds flitting about all of the beautiful flowers in the gardens. Our grandsons are avid golfers and there was lots of room for putting balls. We introduced them to croquet and must have played for hours!
Every adult on the trip said we wished we could stay another week!
We had three generations of our family staying at the Poynton Lodge. There was something to do for everyone and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The beautiful scenery and wildlife -- eagles, osprey, deer - - came together to provide a natural treat to the eyes every day. The garden provided plenty of FRESH goodness from the earth. In the large yard we played football, Frisbee, made smores, and took leisurely walks. For water fun we went boating, fished, and swam. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. We took a few day trips to Reedville, Kilmarnock, and Williamsburg. We played golf at Kings Carter in Kilmarnock, very nice course. For those that need it, internet service is acceptable but I recommend unplugging from the ‘net to enjoy more of what the Lodge and the surrounding area have to offer. A month later, our family is still talking about what a wonderful time we had.
Highly recommended! THANK YOU for such a wonderful place to spend our vacation. - JLD
Poynton Lodge was the perfect vacation home for our extended family of 11 from ages 81 to 5. The house was beautiful with the bedrooms overlooking the Bay. We saw dolphins every day and the sunrises were breathtaking. The kids played on the beach (we did not see another soul on the beach all week), and we went paddle boating, kayaking and canoeing. We had a family Olympics in the spacious yard and played volleyball, kickball and softball. The bamboo shower was a hit - especially with the 5 year old, who took about 20 showers that week as she yelled for everyone to join her in the "jungle!" Kids founds tons of seaglass on a remote beach nearby - a bottle bottom from Scotland and one dated 1861. The garden was an added plus - the biggest blackberries we have ever eaten - delicious. You have to be willing to be "remote" though to enjoy this property - 20 min or so to nearest grocery and probably 2 hours to places like Williamsburg. Wifi is iffy (Dish.net) and cell service goes in and out. The caretakers live nearby and were extremely friendly and attentive.
We loved Poynton Lodge and we will return again:)
The Northern Neck is a hidden treasure on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, with wide water, abundant wildlife, and tranquil seclusion. Less than 3 hours from Capitol Hill, it is miles from the urban frenzy. Explore quaint small towns, bike on quiet country roads, or kayak up meandering creeks.
Or just sit back on the deck and watch the water, which never ceases to fascinate. At dawn, local watermen harvest crab and fish in traditional flat bottom boats. After dark, brightly lit cruise ships steam down the Bay toward the Caribbean. Herons pose on the jetties, pelicans and cormorants circle the fish traps, and eagles soar overhead. You may even spot a pod of dolphins swimming along the shoreline.
Our cottage sits on seven secluded acres, with 360' of private sandy beach. Our family has been building fabulous memories here for the last 27 years. Come build yours today.
