About the property

A 3 bedroom, 1 & 1/2 bath cabin with gorgeous ocean views available year round

Leave your stress at home! Bayleaf Cottage is situated just feet from the shore of Herrick Bay in Brooklin, Maine, locally described as the Boat Building Capital of the world! Completely renovated when we bought it, our 3 bedroom log cabin comfortably sleeps 6 people, or 8 with the sleeper sofa in the living room. Be enveloped by the rustic warmth of weathered pine while relaxing comfortably on plush leather sofas or recliners. Two bedrooms, with king and queen beds, offer expansive views of the bay and the islands beyond, while the third, with bunk beds, offers a view of the stars through a large skylight. Linger over meals at a comfortable dining table seating 8, or enjoy the breathtaking views from the front deck while feasting on lobsters or clams right by the waters where they were harvested. Dig your own clams if you like! Cooking will be a pleasure in the newly renovated and well-stocked kitchen, or stroll for ten minutes down the quiet wooded lane to enjoy fine dining at the Brooklin Inn or casual, local BBQ at the Brooklin General Store. Launch your canoe, kayak or small sailboat from the beach and explore tranquil Herrick Bay and its nearby islands. Hop on your bike and ride two miles to the Wooden Boat School, where individuals and families are welcome to take courses in sailing, kayaking, and all aspects of wooden boat-building.

Artists or craftspeople will also enjoy using the unfinished shed on the property or the full unfinished, daylit basement for studio space.

About Linda and Michael Soukup

After a career with the National Park Service, a job offer and love of Acadia National Park brought us from Virginia to the Maine coast five years ago. Despite early skepticism about this seemingly remote place, there has been no looking back. We've always lived on the east coast, but Maine's rugged beauty is unparalleled, whether in summer or winter, and we find that the pace and intimacy of small town living suits us very well. We live in nearby Blue Hill, where we moved for the high school in which we've enrolled our twins. We enjoy hiking, sailing, canoeing, camping, and skiing, as well as folk music, and more recently, bluegrass......Linda fiddles in a band. We most enjoy the Maine character and lifestyle--and the dramatic coastline.

Linda and Michael Soukup purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Linda and Michael Soukup chose Downeast and Acadia

People travel from all over the world to come to Downeast Maine, so we realized that owning a rental property would make sense. We set out to make a sound business decision and find a home in pristine shape, all ready to rent, and we searched and searched and found......Bayleaf, the first home we looked at. It met none of our business criteria, but in the end we knew we couldn't fool ourselves; we can only devote ourselves to what we love. We stood on the deck, looked out over the water and didn't see a single sign of human habitation, 'heard' the silence of 25 acres and no neighbors, felt the ocean breeze, watched the shorebirds feeding on the flats, smelled the fir trees, and knew it was special. We lived in a remote location once before, and realized that while liking the privacy we didn't like a long drive to get wherever we were going, so Bayleaf, which, while as private as it gets, is less than five minutes from town, felt like the perfect combination. It took lots of work to get it ready, but being there, even to work, was always a pleasure, and we furnished it with an eye to what we'd enjoy ourselves......comfortable, but not fussy or formal.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin was built by a highly successful and well-known sailboat designer. He designed nearly 200 boats while living there--perhaps at least partly a testament to the solitude and the inspiration the site provides.

This was the best home we have ever rented in this area. It was perfect in every way. It has beautiful water views in every type of weather and time of day, and is very quiet. The location was ideal for our dogs who could roam easily, and safely. The house was so charming, and so very clean. They had everything one needs in the kitchen, and the beds were comfortable. The heat worked well, and it was cozy on the colder days.

Owner's Response: Many people think of Maine as an ideal summer destination, but we're so glad that some brave souls are enjoying the beauty of winter here too. We think the snow and ice on the shoreline just make the scene more dramatic. The community is quiet this time of year, but we've been lucky to host guests who seem to relish the serenity. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay!

Restorative Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our fourth stay in three years at BAYLEAF this August. BAYLEAF offers a secluded and beautiful getaway right on Herrick Bay. Located in the quiet town of Brooklin, BAYLEAF is large enough for families and fully stocked with all the comforts of home. Enjoy kayaking, bird watching, badminton, volleyball, reading, exploring and relaxing right on site. Area attractions include a multitude of hiking areas, shops, restaurants and, of course, the beautiful coastline and Eggamoggin Reach. Owners, Linda and Michael, are responsive and attentive and a delight. We've enjoyed BAYLEAF with our four children - now all college students- and our dogs. I appreciate the fact that we can cook and enjoy our meals at the house. We eat healthier and can save our money for treats when we venture into area towns. We rent a slip at the Brooklin boatyard and enjoy exploring the Maine Island Trail. If you enjoy peace and solitude and love watching the tide ebb and flow, then BAYLEAF is a perfect getaway.

We love Bayleaf! The owners are wonderful and helpful. We look forward to a return visit. It is a favorite place for quiet, sailing and hiking opportunities and not far from Acadia. Brooklin is a gem of a town.

The MOST wonderful vacation we have ever had!

  • 5 of 5

It is my pleasure to write this review!

Our week at Bayleaf was pure heaven and exceeded our expectations!

The owners are amazing, Linda & Michael prepared the cabin for more than we could even do in a week! We had everything we needed to enjoy a quiet, relaxing family vacation including our own fire on the 4th of July while watching fireworks over the water in the distance! We spent much time on the deck watching the seals---a true delight! We also watched eagles, ospreys dive for fish as well as other wildlife. (The owners had binoculars of course!!) We played many board games and found a few brand new favorites I will be ordering for Christmas gifts--these will forever remind us of Bayleaf! We had everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare many fresh Maine Lobsters!

The quiet at Bayleaf was amazingly restful and the smell of the ocean seemed to sooth us immediately as we stepped out of our car upon arrival. Our stay at Bayleaf will never be forgotten by my husband, my 10 year old son and myself!

great place

  • 4 of 5

Great place, but if you want to make the best of it come equiped with rubber boots to be able to walk at low tide; we had a 17 month baby who knew how to go up the stairs but not how to go down so it was a bit stressfull for the old grand mother (even if I am only 65) since to get down to the bay there is a good long stair, the rocks as they say can get slippery; we had 4 other kids, they enjoyed the swing the long drive way with their bikes; lots of info in the place for moving around we discovered many great outings just the right distance for me and the kids; a great walk my favorite was in brooksville, but so many to choose from in the blue hill peninsula, easy to find with the instruction int the guest book, but be carefull of ticks specially ( sorry forgot the name) but we call it the blueberry field; we specially enjoyed deer isle and sand beach; Anna store in brooklin is nice, all the people in Maine are particularly friendly and easy going; impressive view and a wild mosquitoe ( millions) walk to harrimans point what an adventure that was ( we were there end of june ) we almost turned back, we smuged the kids with two inches of mosquitoe reppelent but they still swarmed, we must of been right in the high season; it was not a relaxing vacation, but what did I expect travelling with my two daughters and five kids under 7 years old , it will stay in my memory for ever; thank you Linda and Michael for sharing your haven. the house is super comfortable, thank you for the sturdy furniture ,not easy to keep kids sitting quietly; would surely recommend bayleaf to friends.

Owner's Response: I must agree with Danielle that Bayleaf was probably not the most restful place to stay with five very young children. The cabin is very close to the shore , which enhances the view but makes it easy for young ones to head that way, and the stairs are a bit steep. Like much of Maine's coast, our shore is rocky and can be tricky for very young children. Children do need to be very closely supervised, which is not always the most relaxing task (speaking as the mother of twins!). I told Danielle about two more gentle beaches five minutes from the cabin, and I think they enjoyed those, but if they were hoping to do lots of swimming from our tidal shore I'm sure they were disappointed. We never like our guests to be disappointed!

Bayleaf Cabin
Car: necessary

The town of Brooklin is located on the scenic Blue Hill peninsula; all roads leading to it hug the rocky, picturesque Maine coastline. Bayleaf is located near enough to access all three of Acadia National Park's units: the main park on Mount Desert Island, Isle le Haut, a short ferry ride from neighboring Stonington, and Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Harbor. Blue Hill peninsula is famous for its long tradition of fine arts and crafts, as well as organic farming; Brooklin offers a weekly farmer's market. The town is also home to the Wooden Boat School, which offers classes to families and individuals interested in all aspects of wooden boats. Brooklin is proud of its local general store, in business for 150 years, as well as its full library, fine or casual dining, and shops. Local lobstermen are happy to supply lobsters freshly pulled from the sea, and clams are easy to dig on the flats at low tide.

Those interested in outdoor activities will enjoy kayaking or canoeing; Herrick is a tranquil bay with long uninhabited coastlines and islands to explore. One can also travel ten minutes down the road and drop a boat in Blue Hill's locally famous reversing falls. The Wooden Boat School is a two mile bike ride along level roads. The Blue Heritage Trust maintains miles of hiking trails on the peninsula, and of course Acadia National Park offers an unparalleled range of hiking, biking, and riding trails. Charters are available in the area for fishing and sailing, and whale watching and puffin tours leave Bar Harbor daily. The nearby Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, in early August, is a sailboat race for wooden boats; with approximately 125 participants, it is a breath-taking sight to see.

Those looking for evening entertainment, beyond enjoying spectacular views of the stars in our unpolluted night skies, can find local theater at the Stonington Opera House, classical music concerts at Kneisel Hall in Blue Hill, or movies in Ellsworth at the recently restored Art Deco Grand Theater.
