About Steve Wood

Glenda and I were both raised in West Texas. We joined the corporate world and made our way through Pueblo, Co; Midland, TX; then on to the Austin area where we both recently retired.

Through many a visit, we found Fredericksburg an oasis of good, ole fashioned, small town living in the heart of our beloved Texas.

We had often thought of owning a small B&B as it seems we always had people at our home with Glenda feeding the neighborhood. Sharing Glenda’s creative and fantastic cooking with our guests just seemed to be the natural progression of our lives. Getting back closer to nature, raising chickens, enjoying “the farm”, having deer and longhorns for neighbors, and hosting our two quaint cabins has become a dream come true for both of us.

We hope you come visit and enjoy our Cabins Out Back as much as we do.

Why Steve Wood chose Fredericksburg

The Cabins Out Back are the consummate get-away location. Near to downtown, but far enough out to truly be in the country.

The Stars at Night are Big and Bright, Deep in the Heart of Texas! This certainly rings true at the Nest and the Roost where the dark skies, wide open places, and quite pastures resonate peace and tranquility. Come join us for a restful weekend, great breakfast, and fun visit to Fredericksburg in the hill country.

Fredericksburg, Texas always has something going on in town. We have a Christmas Parade that is huge and it is at night!...Have to see it to believe it when you have live longhorn steers with lights on their horns being ridden down Main Street in December.

A favorite with lots of visitors is the winery tours, many folks opt to let someone else do the driving while they sit back and enjoy the day. Did you know that the Fredericksburg area is second in wineries only to Napa Valley, California?

If you like the outdoors and an occasional hike up a solid granite dome check out Enchanted Rock Park, beautiful views and a nice way to spend a day...only 17 miles from our cabins north on Hwy. 16.

Our two cabins are on the back of our property and we are only 5 miles from downtown FBG, so you can enjoy the activities in town or in the surrounding areas and come back home and enjoy the peace and quiet of 'The Cabins Out Back'.

Wonderful, peaceful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Roost! Adorable tiny house with wonderful hosts and the daily breakfast was delightful! My husband and I loved that the location was far enough to feel relaxing and quiet but close enough to everything. We toured vineyards, explored Fredericksburg and then returned to the cabin for some wine around the chiminea on the front porch. The stars were gorgeous and the deer were everywhere! We look forward to coming back!

A Cozy Cottage and Happy Chickens!

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what I had hoped for - a quiet, cozy cottage where my husband and I could get away for a weekend and decompress. Close enough to Main St in Fredericksburg (a few minutes’ drive) but far away enough to see a blanket of stars at night.

Steve and Glenda are such gracious hosts! They welcomed us upon arrival and made themselves available if we needed anything throughout our stay. And omg Glenda makes the most wonderful breakfast! Everything made from scratch (mmmm biscuits) and delivered to our cabin every morning.

The cabin itself is thoughtfully appointed with everything you need. Honestly I could come back here and spend a couple of days just holed up in the cabin with a good book and a fire in the chiminea at night.

And did I mention the happy chickens? There are chickens roaming around the property all day and I swear one of them thinks she’s a dog! Be careful if you leave the front door open, she might walk right in. :)

Overall we had a great weekend in Fredericksburg and a big part of it was our stay at this property. Highly recommend.

Absolutely perfect!

As soon as you pull in the driveway you notice how clean & well kept this property is. Between the big beautiful trees and all the wildlife, you feel like you are miles and miles into the country. It is peaceful and quite. But, main street is only 5 minutes away! Just perfect for going and coming. We stayed in "The Roost". As soon as you open the door to the cabin you are greeted with a clean and fresh smell & then you instantly notice how immaculate it is! Ida has perfectly arrange the cabin to get the most out of the square footage. Just perfect for a couple! It is beautifully decorated and the bed was super cozy. Everything we could have needed was found in the cabin. She even provided real shampoo and conditioner not the small, cheap bottles found in hotels. We enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings and mornings watching a variety of wildlife. Deer were our favorite. We went from front to back porch to enjoy both views. If mosquitoes or bugs are not your thing the back porch is screened so it is always comfortable! The breakfast served each morning was absolutely delicious. My husband is an extremely picky eater and he enjoyed everything served. Ida really put thought into her breakfast and most of all, love. You could taste it and see it in her presentation. She and her husband were super friendly and we enjoyed our visits with them each morning when they delivered our breakfast. Sweet couple and lovely place. We will definitely come back if given the chance.

These cabins exceeded every expectation that I could've ever imagined. The cabin itself was so cute! The bed was the perfect softness and the pillows were fluffy and soft. The porch was also amazing to sit on and eat the AMAZING breakfast brought to you each morning. Ida and Bill were so friendly and their dogs were adorable. I couldn't say enough good things about our experience. I hope to be back very soon to stay there once again.
