About Deerview

I retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2009. I worked as an Air Traffic Controller in seven different FAA facilities, including my home town of Providence, Rhode Island. I love pets, especially dogs, with cats being a close second. It's hard for me to pass by someone walking their dog in my neighborhood without stopping to pet them or scratch their ears (the dog - not the owner). One of my daughters has a cat, who I love to have lay on my lap, and purr while I'm brushing him.

We are the original owners of this house at Wintergreen and have been enjoying the mountain since 1984. It may not be as fancy as some of the houses on the mountain, but the kids, grandchildren, and our pets are always comfortable and have a good time.

Property in disrepair

  • 2 of 5

We found the letter about leaving everything the way we found it funny, Because there were dishes in the dishwasher so we didn't use it the toaster was gross so we didn't use it. We did however clean up some dust sweep the floors and clean bathrooms. Although it was not filthy I think the cleaning crew needs to be replaced and the whole place needs remodeled and updated. with that said we had a very good time .

Owner's Response: As you would expect from any property owner who rents, it is very disappointing to receive a review like this. Let me reply to all concerns noted: First - the title "Property in Disrepair". Look at the pictures - they represent what you will see when you arrive. I admit there are some repairs that need to be done (specifically molding around doors and windows), but they are not showstoppers. I have already started replacement of the windows and expect to be finished by the end of summer. The molding will be replaced along with the windows. Everything in the house is operational - nothing is broken. Second: Dishes in the dishwasher. Yes, I did see them there when I cleaned up, but I forgot to take them out before I left. There were two plates and a couple of wine glasses. THEY WERE CLEAN! I just forgot to put them in the cabinet before leaving. Third: Toaster? It was sitting on the counter top (see picture of kitchen). I looked at it and do agree it should be replaced. Sometimes I need items like this called to my attention by my guests - I missed it and I apologize. The toaster has been replaced. Fourth: Dust and sweep. I cleaned the house myself, as I didn't have enough time to schedule my regular housekeeper to come in due to a quick turnaround. I did the best I could, but perhaps I missed something - I apologize. I contacted the guest after I read the review and asked why I wasn't notified. I would have had someone go to the house and take care of this. Her reply was that she did not want someone in the house she didn't know. Fifth: Bathrooms. I cleaned them myself. This included sinks, toilet, floors, mirrors and tub. They looked fine to me. This past ski season, I had some water damage and had to replace the vanity. I did so, but I had to make a temporary repair (behind the toilet). Perhaps this annoyed this guest. I am scheduling the downstairs bathroom to be remodeled, but until that is done, the photo you see is exactly how it looks. Again, if not satisfied, a call would have taken care of this. I will address all issues and make sure these items are corrected. I am puzzled however, by the last statement: "we had a very good time" ????? Finally: since I did the cleaning myself - "Marcus, YOU'RE FIRED!"

Delightful Family Vacay!

  • 4 of 5

This lovely property was the ideal location for our family of six to enjoy Wintergreen and all of the wonderful activities that were available. Located only blocks away from the activities was a nice convenience. The home itself was spacious and had everything we needed for our three-night stay. Sitting on the deck in the evenings was lovely and relaxing, and playing games and karaoke with the family was too much fun -- we literally stayed up until 4 in the morning on our second night, belting out songs (and probably scaring away the wildlife with our tone-deaf ballads).

Next year, we will plan to be up much earlier. The snow was a bit slushy and slippery and did not make for easy snowboarding, skiing and tubing. But that didn't hinder the fun! We all played until our bodies gave in. A couple of sore butts and bruises, but nothing that a couple of beers from the nearby breweries didn't fix! Did some grocery shopping beforehand and had most of our meals at the rental. The restaurants at the resort were mostly closed with the exception of The Edge (their food was mediocre at best).

Marcus was extremely friendly, although we never got the chance to meet him in person. He answered all of our questions promptly, and communicated with us clearly. He definitely made the planning and execution of this vacation very easy! Thanks Marcus!

We would have given this property a full 5-Stars but for a few little things. We had to clean the toilets (they were kinda gross), and there was mold on the shower curtains. We also were bummed because we couldn't get the grill working to cook the big hunk of meat that we had prepared. Everyone was looking forward to BBQ, but we ended up just baking it in the oven. Also, even though we were within walking distance of the resort, we DO NOT recommend walking the road to the resort. The winding roads, trees, and cars/trucks flying down the hill just seemed too dangerous.

That being said, we would STILL recommend this wonderful property to friends and family. The price is right, the accommodations & location was perfect, and tons of fun activities!

Owner's Response: I'm happy that basically these guests were satisfied with their stay, but I would like to respond to the "problems" they had. First - I don't think the condition of the ski slopes or the closure of restaurants should be included in a review. If you book accommodations late in the ski season, you should check out conditions and forecasts before you go. This is no different than going to the beach and blaming someone for rain while you're there. Some things we have no control over. Why write this in a review as if it were my fault. As far as housekeeping, if there is a problem, call the owner! Don't stay there for several days, then write a negative review complaining about your dis-satisfaction. There was no mold on the shower curtain - it was dried soap. This was inexcusable, and I humbly apologize. If I had been notified, I would have called my housekeeper to go there immediately and clean or change the shower curtain. The toilets - I don't know what the definition of "kinda gross" is, but I think this was exaggerated. I cleaned the toilets myself a few days before their arrival, and they were clean. Again - a simple call would have corrected this. As far as the grill not working, it is less than a year old, and I checked it immediately after the complaint was received. It fired up on the first click of the starter. I also keep a spare propane tank at the house to make sure you don't run out of fuel. Please call if you have a problem after you arrive, and I will take care of it. (Read some of the previous reviews).

Comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for three couples to get away... without the kids! We enjoyed our time skiing at Wintergreen, but I think we even more enjoyed our comfortable stay at this home. The house was well stocked for cooking up a few meals, and had a great table to play cards at. Marcus was very prompt with answering every little question. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to ANYONE heading to wintergreen!

Definitely going back!

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfect for our group...Two adults and 6 children ranging in age from 2-17; everyone had a blast! The house is in a perfect location, less than a mile from the ski lodge and has hiking trails within walking distance from the house. The karaoke machine provided endless entertainment for all of us after being exhausted from the days activities. Kitchen was well stocked to prepare basic food for several days, the washer and dryer came in very handy and the fire place was just icing on the cake. Marcus was very accessible and hospitable. We will definitely be back. Thanks again!

Great time

  • 4 of 5

Our family stayed this year over Thanksgiving week and enjoyed our time there. The PS3 and games were family friendly and the adults had a blast with Karaoke. The beds were unbelievably comfortable! And, we found the owner to be very courteous and generous.

Exactly as described - great for family

  • 5 of 5

Met Marcus upon arrival. He was very helpful. My family and I were in the area to attend a wedding. The house is situated perfectly from wintergreen condos and the base of mountain by Devils Backbone. There is a gas station on the mountain and a deli / market for small items so you don't have to go all the way into town. I sat on the back deck with my dog and coffee and a young buck walked through the yard and crossed over the street. Truly beautiful. Marcus had been wonderful to work with.
