About Heidrun

About Robert and Heidrun

I am a teacher and I have a BA degree in Icelandic literature. My husband Robert works as a Pilot in Europe and has a BS degree in business administration. We have two little boys, 5 and 8 years old.

Heidrun purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Heidrun chose Iceland

We wanted to have a nice holiday home where we could relax and recharge the batteries.. and that´s precisely what we succeeded. Also the short distance to Borgarnes (swimming pool, gym and everything else) and to the Capital, Reykjavík.

For us, this place is heaven on earth.

What makes this cottage unique

Peacefulness - You can sit outside or walk around the house on the large patio and enjoy the nature and the amazing mountain view in the peaceful surroundings.

High Standard and modern – All the equipment in the house is high standard and you should find everything you need and more. The open space and the large windows give you the feeling that you are out in the nature even when you are inside.

Location - The location of the house is ideal for exploring the west side of Iceland. There are short driving distances to many beautiful places in the nature such as waterfalls and craters. Museums and historical places are also nearby. There is only a 15 minutes drive to the nearest town, Borgarnes, where you can find for example a swimming pool, golf course, shops, bakery, restaurants, library and health care.

Beautiful, relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 adults recently spent two nights at this beautiful property. After several days driving, hiking and exploring in southern Iceland and the Golden Circle area this was just what we needed to recharge. We rented both the main house and the guest house but the whole family was drawn to the open kitchen/living room in the main house. Preparing meals was a pleasure in the well equipped kitchen and even those who chose instead to soak in the hot tub were not too far away from the action and conversation. The blackout curtains in the bedrooms were a nice touch, but I couldn't resist peeking out on our last morning to watch the sunrise over the beautiful landscape. The property was also conveniently located for a day trip to the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Beginning with my initial inquiry last fall, Heidi was incredibly responsive, with nearly instantaneous replies. She provided thorough information on the house (including visual instructions for all the appliances) as well as info on recreation, shopping and cultural attractions. The only thing that would have improved our experience would have been more time to explore it all!

Amazing house, perfectly off the beaten path.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the area and had a magical drive to the house arriving around 2am - Iceland time. It felt like we were the only people in the country. After a couple hours of sleep we walked down the road to admire the beautiful Langa River - it's saphire blue color a striking contrast to the purple lupine dotting the banks of the river. We especially liked how we could all be together in a house-enjoying our time togther.. no tourists anywhere in sight...yet only a scenic drive away from the most spectacular sights I have ever encountered. We continued to get off the beaten path and took smaller roads through the mountains to Thinglevir, Geysir, Gulfoss, dinner in Reykjavik and back home to Borgarnes. A long, but perfect day! Another trip to Snaefellness netted equally special memories. Hit the road early and you can beat some of the busses out of Reykjavik!! We managed to arruve at a waterfall and hiked to the top before anyone else arrived. By 9 you are following the tour busses but it is manageable. After days of driving, Borgarnes offered just the right amount of history, museums, sculptures, churches and coffee shops to balance out a day hopping between the comforts of our home base and sightseeing,. I would absolutely recommend this rental. If you rent both spots the path between the houses is magical, where you keep hoping a fairy will present itself at any moment...of note - pass the road to turn for the main house and turn at the next dirt road to drop off luggage (or have you kids drag it down previously mentioned path.) Heidi was helpful and easy to communicate with. 5 stars!

Fantastic properties in an idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in these two beautiful houses. We were lucky enough to stay over Christmas for 4 nights. We visited Iceland with family in the hope of having a white Christmas and Iceland did not disappoint.

Unfortunately we arrived later than planned due to flight delays and following a 2hr drive in blizzard conditions finally found the main house using Heidrun's very helpful directions. The main house is stunning and everyone was wowed by it upon arrival. We let our parents stay in the main house while the younger adults (all in their 30s) had the guest house. The main house is larger than it looks in the pictures and easily accommodated the 9 of us for meals and relaxing in. It has a great bathroom, spacious bedrooms and a great open plan area for everyone to gather, not to mention a brilliant coffee machine! The guest house was ideal, and also had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Both houses had all the mod cons you could need and good wifi access. Both hot tubs were well utilised and there was nothing better than sitting in them with a drink in our hands as the snow came down.

Heidrun was really helpful and when we had issues with one of our hire cars, and the hire car company weren't much help Heidrun managed to organise some jump leads to borrow on Boxing day. Which meant we were able to visit the local waterfalls and caves an hour away.

We had a fantastic stay, the only downside was unfortunately we didn't get to see the Northern Lights - apparently they had been visible in the area the night before we arrived - but such is life and it gives us the perfect excuse to visit Iceland again!

We found Heidrun very helpful and quick to respond to our messages. We fell in love with the houses and their location, there was something very special about it all and we miss it very much.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this nice review. We think it´s so important to make our guests feel like they are welcome and get support from someone local like us, since we are used to travel ourselves. Welcome back and perhaps next time in our house on the South Coast, maybe during the summertime... :-) Sincerely, Heidi and Rob

Wonderful Stay in West Iceland

  • 5 of 5

The house was very well appointed, clean and comfortable. The guesthouse was perfect for my wife and I while our daughter and her family stayed in the house. The location was peaceful, quiet, and within easy driving distance of everything we wanted to see in West Iceland. It was far enough away from city lights for us to enjoy a spectacular Northern Lights show for over an hour on our first night.

The owner was very accommodating and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We would certainly recommend the property to any of our friends planning a trip to Iceland and look forward to staying there again.

Gorgeous place and great location

  • 5 of 5

Loved the house and cabin too! Great base camp for area explorations. Our only difficulty was the stove and microwave as we dont have these types in Canada but owners were so patient with our questions and Rob was very interesting to talk to!

Would stay here again for sure.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your nice review. The operation of the equipment might be a bit different from Europe and the US. The child lock is simply hold and wait and the microwave is turned on by turning the time selection and wait. Otherwise, the House Manual should cover the details. Nice meeting you guys and welcome back to Helluskógur. Sincerely, Heidi and Rob

A truly excellent property in a beautiful location and fantastically managed

  • 5 of 5

We rented both properties for our group of 12 for one week and were absolutely delighted.

Heidi and Rob were amazing from day one. We first inquired 12 months prior to our visit and they were extremely helpful and patient with my never ending questions, answers to which were sometimes only seconds away. Advice from key sights to the best supermarkets was freely given and so very valuable.

The houses are stunning. The smaller older property is quaint and practical, the new property (that I believe has been, at least in part, built with Rob and Heidi's own two hands) is stunning. They are close together and in a beautiful and peaceful area a little off the beaten track. Although being a little more remote we were still able to access the main sights easily. Driving in this stunning scenery was never a problem, in fact it was a privilege!

There are plenty of sights to see and walks to do. We traveled inland towards Gullfoss (the falls), down to Reykjavik and up towards Snæfellsjökull. I have to say 'towards' because in two cases the snow forced us to turn around when we were very close, which was a shame. We shall just have to come back :-), which will be a joy. Our trip to Reykjavic for the new years eve fireworks was AMAZING. You just have to see it to believe it. I love fireworks and have done complex and large displays myself but I have never seen anything like this. In reality the whole city goes bang from 11:35. it builds to a crescendo at 12:00 (mind blowing in sight and sound) and goes on, and on.

Returning to the house or staying put for relaxing days was always a joy. The hot tubs were heavily used, relaxing with snow all around, a drink in one hand, watching the night's sky was amazing! (we did get the northern lights one night). Rob and Heidi's attention to detail is impressive. The guide books you get when booking (directions and operational manuals) is the best we have ever seen and made life a breeze.

The local town, Borgarnes, has good supermarkets and great coffee shops and the Settlement Center (museum) has a lovely restaurant. There is also a local bakery made famous in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), Hollywood thought the scenery so amazing they filmed it (although the bakery became a pizza joint..)

We were all really impressed with the properties and the owners.

We can't recommend this enough and we would love to go back!

Don't wait. BOOK this property now or we might get there before you.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the nice review. We try to make the stay for our guests as comfortable as possible, good to know that the manuals and directions are helpful, that is the goal. We are here to answer all our guests questions, so that they don´t have to worry about things. Yes the fireworks on New Years Eve are amazing, Icelanders are known for going a bit crazy this last night of the year! Welcome again, next time you will make it to Gullfoss and Snæfellsjökull :-)

West Beach Where river Langá meets the sea

The house is located along the spectacular Salmon River, Langá, one of the greatest salmon rivers in Europe. There are walking paths from the house, where you can enjoy the peaceful nature and walk by the river. If you are staying in the late summer or autumn you will find blueberries growing near the river. You are welcome to pluck them, it´s delicious.

The house is a about a one hour drive north from the Reykjavík Capital and about 10 minutes from Borgarnes. In Borgarnes you can enjoy one of the nicest swimming pools in Iceland, play golf at Hamarsvöllur, visit the great Settlement center where you can learn about the Icelandic culture and saga and shop at the Bonus grocery store. In Borgarnes you will find the interesting Farmers market, Ljómalind, which sells food and products made in the area.

In the north direction, about one hour driving, you will find the old fishermen´s town Stykkishólmur, where you can go sailing, Whale Watching and enjoy Bird Watching paradise. In Stykkishólmur you can visit interesting museums like the Water museum and the Volcano museum. On the way to Stykkishólmur you will find the crater Eldborg which is an interesting natural phenomenon with lava all around.

Close to Stykkishòlmur, you'll find the great Snæfellsnes National Park. It was voted one of **Iceland Top Five** to visit. There you can enjoy Snæfellsjökull, and its magical and remarkable nature. On the way from Stykkishólmur to the National Park you will drive through a small town called Grundarfjörður. There is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland, called Kirkjufell. Drive on and you will find plenty of interesting places worth visiting, like Djúpalónssandur a beautiful pebbled beach, Vatnshellir Cave and the popular hiking trail by the cliff beach between Hellnar and Arnarstapi.

The beautiful Borgarfjörður area is close by Helluskógur. In Borgarfjörður you can find many interesting places to visit. The largest thermal spring in Iceland, Deildartunguhver, is located near a small town called Kleppjárnsreykir and is about 40 minutes drive from Borgarnes. Close by Deildartunguhver is the historical place Reykholt. There you can find Snorrastofa which we recommend visiting if you are interesting in Icelandic Saga. If you drive on from Reykholt towards Húsafell you will see the beautiful waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, which are absolutely worth a visit. From Húsafell you can go on a tour into the glacier Langjökull, one of Europe’s largest glacier. Amazing! There are horse rentals in Borgarfjörður if you are interested in the Icelandic Horse and would like to go on a riding trip.

You can say about the location of the house that it is midway between the two great National Parks, Snæfellsnes and Þingvellir. Þingvellir is located on the Golden Circle and is a popular tourist destination. Þingvellir is a place of historical, cultural, and geological importance. It is the site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is also home to Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. On the Golden Circle you can also visit the great waterfall Gullfoss and the hot spring Geysir.

We are here to help you plan your vacation and get the most out of your stay in Iceland. Later on we will send you an information package with the House manual and detailed directions, Restaurants and cafes in the area and Attractions in the area. We will also send you a few apps, like the Home Away Hospitality manager app where we have put in a lot of information. Also apps for Icelandic yellow pages, northern light forecast and Icelandic weather forecast. You are welcome to contact us at any time if you have any questions.
