The enclosed ground floor A/C bedroom contrasts in every respect with the open upstairs accommodation featuring pure Balinese unobstructed clear views down to the assure Indian Ocean over blinding emerald green rice fields bounding the exotic Hindu Temple Puri Mastima. The room's second floor height assures one of the best views on Bali and makes it a wonderfully private nest hidden up in the tops of the surrounding coconut and fig palms.
There is so much to do and see in and around Villa Chandra ranging from massages (reflexology to full-body) including day fishing trips with the local fishermen, private yoga and tai chi lessons and many, many things in between that we have produced several brochures to help our guests plan their stay in advance. A second brochure covers a range of Island tours with pricing, distances and short descriptions of the tours and the Balinese drivers that we have cleared to work with our guests for their English abilities and knowledge. Both of these brochures are only available after you have booked and your email address is accessible to us.
Villa Chandra is a very special and unique base to enjoy your Balinese experience from and we feel that we have succeeded in including as much of the world famous Balinese flair and style into it's construction and layout as we possibly could and at the same time fully embracing a maximum on western ideals of comfort and convenience. Our trained, gentle and loyal Balinese staff who have all been with us for many years will do everything in their power to assure that your stay with us is a happy, tranquil, adventurous and memorable one.
As owners and caretakers of this small piece of paradise along with the neighbouring Villa Surya we try to use our extensive local knowledge to assist our guests in getting the most out of their short time here and help make their holiday truly the experience of a lifetime.

We love Bali and all things Balinese from the people to the mountains and everything in between. Our goal is to make this available to our guests with our intimate local knowledge and happiness in meeting new and interesting people from all over this wonderful planet
Owner purchased this Villa in 2013
Why Owner chose Subagan
I built this property after constructing the neighboring Villa Surya and tried to include all the things that differentiate High End Luxury (Surya) from High End Joy of Living (Chandra) including a hang to the romantic which is all around us here in Bali.
What makes this Villa unique
The views alone are to-die-for but we hope you won't but hang around to thrive on Ketut's marvelous cooking which ALL our guests love and the offers she's had to decline to go home with them are almost a daily event. We are situated 150 yards/meters away from a Hindu temple and 200 away from the beach. Our tropical garden has coconuts, papaya, banana, mango, soursap, etc - lots of fruit. So you are living in the middle of a tropical orchard.

Beautiful, Relaxing Villa Chandra
Dear Mark and Petra,
Dennis and I had the most wonderful week at Villa Chandra. We both arrived a little under the weather, and this was the perfect "medicine" for us. We rarely left the property as it was so nice to just relax laying by the pool, swimming, reading, watching the ships go by, listening to the ocean waves crash upon the shore, watching the locals work in the rice fields, just being totally content.
Thank you for your hospitality as well. You are both so friendly and Dennis and I enjoyed the times we were able to chat with you.
Your staff is great!! Ketut is an amazing cook, and I am sure that I would have put on a few pounds if my ailing stomach would have cooperated. The men taking care of the pool and grounds were friendly and always smiling, as was the cleaning girl.
And the house... well, it was beautiful and gave us the "true" Bali experience. The grounds and landscaping are beyond gorgeous! LIke a paradise!!
I was sad to leave Villa Chandra. If I have one regret, it's that I couldn't stay longer (and make it to the beach!!)

What a grand review! We have passed on your very kind (but true!) compliments to all the people concerned and they we also happy - it makes it worthwhile for all concerned. Many people think staff are only motivated by their wages, we have found this to be completely untrue and perhaps why the staff here are so great is that they hear immediately what a good job they are doing and treat the guests like their best friends. But that's kind of Balinese too.
We do hope you come again as with your being a bit "under the weather" upon arrival you missed that there is so much more of Bali to see and experience. Next time book longer in East Bali (where ever you want to stay!) and let the "Island of the Gods" Bali enchant you like it has us.
Again many thanks (from Alit, Kadek, Made, Ketut, Mark and Petra) and we all hope to see you again. Soon!
Om Swastiastu (Balinese/Sanskrit for "may your God be with you")
Authentic Bali with outstanding hospitality
Let me start by apologizing for submitting this review so long after our vacation to this beautiful place. Mark and Petra, you two couldn't have treated us better and we truly appreciate you making our trip to Bali so memorable.
This was the first place we stayed on our first time to Bali and it was perfect. Their driver picked us up from the airport, and was happy to answer any questions we had during the ride back to the villa. He even offered to pull over at a local fruit stand to let us try a new tropical treat. We arrived at the villa just after sunset and were greeted as we got out of the car. The outdoor table was already set for our first dinner and we were shown to our room and given a brief description of our stay before settling in. Ketut cooked us one of the best meals we've ever had, while overlooking a gorgeous rice field with the beach just beyond it. This place was not among a busy, tourist filled town, but a true authentic village. It was quiet, relaxing, and gorgeous yet still had plenty of things to do within walking distance. Every morning and night Mark and Petra would ask us if we had any questions about the village (or anything for that matter.) They have lived there for quite some time and are extremely knowledgeable. Mark even took us to a beautiful temple about an hour from the villa, showed us the best places to stop for a bite, and even told us the best areas to visit for the rest of our vacation as we moved around the island.
The guest house that we stayed in was perfect. While we were there, we happened to be the only 2 people staying in our particular house (there are 2 on the property.) There is a bedroom downstairs, and one upstairs that is open with bamboo roll down shades giving plenty if privacy to the room. Breathtaking view. There is a large private balcony upstairs looking over the entire rice field, temple, part of the village, and onto the ocean. I can't begin to tell you how many pictures we took from this area. We stayed 2 nights in this room and one in the downstairs room. Each bedroom has its own bathroom that was spacious and well decorated. The upstairs shower has a window looking into the foliage.
I recommend walking a few minutes down the beach to Charlie's Chocolate Factory. This was another great recommendation given to us by Mark and Petra. Get the cold chocolate drink.
Overall, I would stay here again no questions asked, and I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Bali.
Thank you again
Thank you so much for your lovely revue and we will pass your kind comments on to Mark, Petra and the staff ( "Ketut cooked us one of the best meals we've ever had"!! Wow! Please don't tell Ketut it will just go to her head and the Balinese are so delightfully shy...
It's always a fine line between being helpful and intrusive and it changes with every guest so thank you for your encouraging words - we do try and make the short time every guest has the best that can be whether they just want to chill by the pool and drink fresh fruit juices or take a more active part in their holidays and see and experience as much as they can from our wonderful home that some call "Island of the Gods".
In your few days with us you managed to check out some ( but by no means, all) of the many things to do and see in our part of Bali from the "Floating Palace" in Ujung, the gorgeous beach at White Sandy Beach, to the local markets in Amlapura.
It's always grand for us to have adventurous guests that remind us what a wonderful place Bali really is. See you again next time.
Thank you Petra and Mark for making our stay even more enjoyable! Thank you for all your help and knowledge in planning our tours....it certainly made things much easier for us! You went out of your way to make our stay special! The villa is as private as you want it to be! Your staff is second to none....thank you to Kuduk (hopefully I spelled this correctly!) for cooking such wonderful meals....it was so much easier than having to buy your own groceries and then having it cooked! Thank you to Alit and his wife...they are both such an asset and we enjoyed getting to know them! I would definitely recommend this villa to anyone! We certainly enjoyed staying here and enjoyed the peace and quiet! We wish you all the best!
Having been to Bali numerous times we decided we needed something more authentic and what a great choice this was.
This is not your average type of tourist trap its the real deal with the real food with real people in the real Bali.
Imagine waking up in the morning looking out of your bedroom to rice paddies a temple and the ocean.
Then having your breakfast made by local village staff with a genuine smiles.
Make sure you get them to cook for you, the food was fresh fresh fresh and authentic.
Ask and you shall receive, these people go out of their way to make your stay memorable, we were even taken to the markets with them an what an experience that was.We also seen a local celebration.
My son loved this place and wasn't bored once there is so much to see and do very close to this place and its not full of tourists.
The property is quiet , peaceful and luxurious.
We used the driver on a few occasions ,I cant remember the price but it was super cheap compared to the last time in Bali and we went to some places the tourists do go to.
The owner picked us up at the airport and boy is this guy knowledgeable and has a love for Bali and the local people. It made the rest of the holiday easy as he told us what to avoid and made recommendations to us.Everyone is friendly helpful without being intrusive and the locals are not pushy
I could go on and on but I'll let the fact that we made another booking for later this year tell you that this place is very very good.
Far below expectations
Villa Chandra nearly ruined our trip to Bali. We checked out early and lost $600 because the place made us ill (see below) and is not "luxury" whatsoever. It is also not "romantic" because the owners have no respect for privacy and walk in whenever they please. Poor value for money, unsafe for children, and worst of all, an owner (who also manages Villa Surya) who did not care for the safety nor privacy of our family.
There are so many great villas in Bali--Villa Chandra and Villa Surya are not among them.
This place is not "luxury" as the ad suggests--Villa Chandra is more like a hot, sticky, cheap ecolodge in an overgrown garden, with critters (huge spiders, lizards, cockroaches, red ants) EVERYWHERE . Only one space (the unattractive downstairs bedroom) has A/C.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SORT OF HAY FEVER, POLLEN, OR TREE ALLERGIES, DO NOT STAY HERE. My husband and six-month-old baby had such bad respiratory problems that we asked to leave after three nights (of 10 nights). We hoped to get just a night or two refund. Mark refused to negotiate and returned none of our money. He did help us obtain medicine, but this--the strongest steroidal treatment--did not work.
When I did leave and attempted to share my feedback of the place with Mark, he slammed the door in my face in front of his staff while I was carrying my six-month-old son.
IF YOU HAVE SMALL KIDS, DO NOT STAY HERE. There are 5- to 15-foot drops with no railings in the upstairs bedroom, swimming pool , stairs, and the dining/living area. We couldn't take our eyes of our kids for a second. Beyond that, there were huge spiders on the beds, ants in the bathrooms, and a hornets nest over the pool.
IF YOU WANT PRIVACY, DO NOT STAY HERE. The owner Mark, who stays on site when his other property, Villa Surya, is not rented, enters the grounds whenever he wishes (usually wearing only a sarong). We booked this remote location to get away from people but instead had Mark and his partner Petra coming in and out any time they wished, from early in the morning until late at night. Some guests may enjoy this sort of hands-on, over-involved presence. We did not.
Many more problems beyond this that I won't get into (misleading pricing on food; raw bread served for breakfast with overcooked eggs; very unattractive dining/living area; and more). All in all, a horrible experience. We were thrilled to leave.
Thank you Naomi for your review...
We disagree with almost everything in it but if for no other reason it does prove the veracity of the Home Away review system.
Where to begin?
For starters Mark and Petra don't own anything and were simply living in the next door Villa Surya and did their level best to help a young family with 2 small children in any way they could. I've passed on your gratitude.
After a wonderful start when you said the villa was "fantastic - the upstairs bedroom is the most beautiful I have ever seen in all my years in Asia" the view "spectacular" the food "excellent" and that you were all happy to have a wonderful 10 days of doing nothing in Bali.
Unfortunately it all went very quickly downhill when we learned that your husband was suffering from serious allergies THAT HE HAD ALL THE TIME IN CAMBODIA, WHERE YOU LIVE.
Imagine our surprise and delight after we spent an entire day driving from pharmacy to pharmacy to find your husband's special medicine to hear that with his pre-existing serious condition and 2 very small children you had neglected to either bring his normal medicine with you or found it necessary to have ANY TRAVEL OR MEDICAL INSURANCE!!!
You then pointed out that being a travel writer you would make it very difficult for us unless you got your money back - no mention was made of 1 or 2 days. I don't react well to threats, particularly ones made by people who cause their own problems so I pointed out that you had read our cancellation policy, were unprepared for a pre-existing medical condition, had no insurance to cover your medical problems or the cancellation of your holiday due to medical grounds that any doctor could have attested to. At this point everything that was previously "wonderful" and "fantastic" was now ... well, the reverse. Hence this glowing review and my reply.
For our future guests (should anyone ever be that foolish again):
1) it is absolutely necessary to have travel/health insurance. There are so many different bugs here and unfamiliar dangers that to come here without is very, very foolish. Price should not be the guiding factor.
2) If you come to a jungle area (pretty much anywhere below Korea and above Darwin be prepared to share you life with "creepy crawlies". Geckos are everywhere and keep down the bug population a treat but bugs are still around.
3) Look at the pictures of where you are going to stay!!! They don't lie.
We had a wonderful time during our stay at Villa Chandra. We enjoyed the rooms, the marvelous view, the pools, the breakfasts, the garden, our hosts and many more. A great place in Bali away from the crowded touristy areas.
