The traditional “cracker house” was built in 1915 and has been lovingly restored. It is a charming 1200 sq. ft. self-catering holiday cottage, 100 yards from Sarasota Bay, 0.3 mile from Bradenton Beach and minutes from Anna Maria Island. This self-catering rental cottage with sun deck, screened porch with new outdoor furniture in 2013 and BBQ sleeps 1-4 persons, has 2 bedrooms, 1 traditional sleeping porch, 1 large family shower room, open plan living/dining area with new sofa in 2013 and cook’s kitchen all with central heat and air conditioning. The hardwood floors, bead board walls and fireplace are just a few of the original features. In addition, The Shack, a studio cottage is an additional 280 sq. ft. with air conditioning, sleeps 1-2 persons, on 1 sleeper sofa and has 1 complete shower room.
About the Village of Cortez: Historic Cortez Village hugs the coast of Sarasota Bay and is one of the few surviving fishing villages on Florida’s west coast. The waters offshore are known as “The Kitchen” because of the bounty of fish harvested from these waters in the early days. Today Cortez has become a haven for artists, writers and fisherman who enjoy the unspoiled environment and slow pace of life.
Cortez is really a world all its own. In many ways, it is like taking a step back in time. You will be charmed by the old bungalows and cottages, many dating back to the 1920s, situated along short, narrow roads dotted with palm trees.
There are neighboring commercial fish houses on Sarasota Bay, where anglers dock their fishing boats and unload their fresh catches each and every day.
Bradenton: Bradenton is a friendly town offering historical attractions and outdoor activities for the young, and young at heart. It is located on the southern most part of Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg and Sarasota. From the dazzling white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, to the banks of the Manatee River, Bradenton offers swimming, fishing, boating, parasailing, canoeing or kayaking. A half dozen beautiful golf courses are located in Bradenton, where the weather is not an issue and you can play sun up to sun down.
The Orlando attractions such as Disney World, MGM Studio and Sea World are just an hour and a half away from Bradenton.
Anna Maria Island: Anna Maria Island is located off the west coast of Florida between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. It’s accessed by two bridges from the mainland and is the northernmost of a string of barrier islands that stretch south to the Florida Keys. Anna Maria Island supports three cities, Anna Maria at the northern end, Holmes Beach in the center and Bradenton Beach at the southern tip. The island boasts a seven-mile long beach rimmed with tall and graceful Australian pines, some as high as 60 feet. There are three fishing piers, charter and sailboat rentals, as well as any number of beach activities to enjoy. Parasailing is a fun way to get a unique look at the island, and there are public tennis courts in Anna Maria and Holmes Beach. If golf is your game, Anna Maria Island is just a short drive to more than 45 championship courses.
There are many beachside restaurants, just a bridge walk away, with wonderful views where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean.
Cortez is one of the last working fishing villages in the state of Florida. It is a piece of history that has not been allowed to die. The locals are proud of there homes and and the unique place it has in Florida's fishing history.
The pictures online did not do this delightful cottage justice. It had a bright and airy feel with an eclectic mix of old and new. Every wall and corner had something interesting to see. I absolutely loved it!
Gigi came by to make sure everything was to our liking, with bottle of wine in hand. The cottage, the quaint location, and the personal customer service ensured that we will most definitely be returning.
We were only there for 4 days, so there is so much more to see. Cant wait to go back!
We fell in love with William Guthrie Cottage the moment we walked in and did not fall out of love in the five weeks we stayed there. The cottage was perfect for our needs with a nice airy feel from the vaulted ceilings, great a/c plus ceiling fans, comfortable seating, plenty of table space for us both to work (we do a lot of our business online), and lovely areas to relax either on the front porch (great for morning coffee, slide the windows open) or the lanai at the back. It's on a quiet street, with friendly locals around. And what can we say about Cortez itself but this is our kind of place! It has a small village feel and it's very easy to walk around. We bought fresh fish or seafood at Starfish most days (only 1 min walk away) which also has a restaurant (best sunsets, but make sure to get there early) and there are other great restaurants within 10 mins walk. Great, cheap breakfasts at Cortez Cafe which became our weekend haunt. And the cottage is well-situated for sightseeing - we saw so much during our time there, like the Ringling Museum and the stunning Ca' d'Zan, Myakka Park, Ana Maria Island, and more. What more can you want? I also want to say that the hosts are amazing too: friendly, helpful and there when/if you need them. We will definitely be back next time we are in that area of Florida.
My winter get-a-way at The William Guthrie House was wonderful in every respect. The quaint little historic fishing village of Cortez is like stepping back in time to when children play on the street and little dogs come over just to welcome you. You can walk to three incredible "fish joints" and enjoy the freshest seafood , live entertainment and where the tourist are treated right by the friendly locals.
Just minutes from the sandy beaches or shop til you drop. Enjoy the best of Anna Maria Island or sit in your back porch and be amazed at the moon and stars. No light pollution here!
The William Guthrie House feels like home. The owners make sure your needs are met so that your holiday will be the best. I wish I could keep this little Gem a secret just for my family to revel in but ...the word is out. I have stayed here two years in a row and will always come back. Cortez and The little yellow house is the place to be.
Thanks Gigi...see you soon.

Our group including 2 adults and 4 college/high school aged young adults felt at home in this clean, quaint and roomy rental. Everyone had their own space when needed and yet there were larger group areas for eating and playing games. The location, within walking distance of restaurants and a market were convenient and the beach was within a quick 10 minute drive. We would stay again!
We stayed at the William Guthrie House for 4 days and found it to be a great place to come back to after a day at the beach. The home was much roomier than we expected. We had our two teenage daughters with us and everyone was able to find their own space. The décor and overall interior was very nicely done. Everything in the home worked great and was good condition. The home was very clean and up to date.
The "shack" is not really a shack. It had it's own bathroom, pull out couch and plenty of room for an extra guest or couple to spend an evening and still have privacy. The washer and dryer set (located in the shack) was great to wash and dry beach towels.
The location is walking distance to the local fish market (we cooked fresh shrimp and mahi mahi on the grill). Everything you need for cooking is provided at the home. The beaches on Anna Marie Island were just a short drive over the bridge.
After spending 3 nights in a hotel in Orlando, this home was exactly what we needed to relax and spend some quality family time.
We fell in love with this cottage and with Cortez. There are several really good places to eat and drink within walking distance. We only went over to Anna Maria Island twice, once to go to Walgreens, and once to watch football on Sunday. Everyone we met, locals and snowbirds, was friendly. Our first day there, we walked to the end of the block (toward the water) and there was a man in a boat with a big fish in his hands. He asked us if we were looking for something, and directed us to the closest best open restaurant/bar and it was so good, we went there every day for the week we were in Cortez. The cottage itself was immaculate and very nicely decorated. It was much more spacious than you can tell from the pictures. Having bicycles for guests to ride was really great. I have nothing but good things to say about this property.
