About Sophie Clarke
I am a garden designer in Spoleto Italy but I grew up on the property and went to school in Cooperstown. The beauty of the lake and hills here make it a natural garden.
Sophie Clarke purchased this Cottage in 1920
Why Sophie Clarke chose Cooperstown
The property has been in my family for several generations and has been used as both a summer holiday retreat and a year-round home. It is both a peaceful place to immerse oneself in nature as well as a stimulating cultural center.
What makes this Cottage unique
Quiet days enjoying nature can be interspersed with world-class entertainment at the opera and visits to the fascinating museums of Cooperstown. And a stroll downhill brings you to the charms of the golf course, one of the 10 oldest in the US.

Cute home with lots of character
Loved staying here while attending Cooperstown. Enjoyed getting away from all the chaos everyday as we headed back to this cute home located in the woods and near the lake. The owner was always very responsive. We had a great stay!
Lovely place situated amongst gorgeous views of the mountains and lake
Character and charm
We stayed at the cottage while our boys played baseball and our husbands coached. The drive was beautiful and although it took over 25 minutes to get there it was a very peaceful drive. The house has a large sitting area and enough bedrooms to make the six of us comfy. I’d like to stress that It is an old cottage with a lot of charm. Do not come in expecting hotel like accommodations. The bedding and towels were new, but the fixtures are dated. The property allowed the other boys to fish and golf for the little time we were off the ball field. The property manager was very friendly upon check in and responsive when we locked ourselves out. (Door locks on its own, so carry a key even if you all leave to walk the property). If charm and character is your thing, I’d most definitely recommend this cottage.
Great baseball getaway!!
We had an amazing time at the Phoenix Cottage! We were about 20-25 minutes away from Cooperstown Dreamspark which was just fine with us! My parents ate at the club house and says it was delicious and my dad and husband played a round of gold between games! Hyde was very helpful and so friendly! We would definitely stay here again! Thank for your hospitality!
Convenience of Phoenix Cottage
Spacious cottage, easily accommodates 6 people. We were attending the "Glimmerglass Opera" (2 matinees) We had a 4 min. drive to the Opera house- couldn't be easier. WiFi was slow, but this is country living- so just relax. Got to try some of the craft beer at pub in the golf course clubhouse- right next door- only downside- pub restaurant closed the first day of our stay- timing is everything- waitstaff returning to college- all in all, Phoenix Cottage made our opera weekend enjoyable.
Perfect quiet retreat with beautiful views
Phoenix Cottage was a terrific rustic retreat which gave us a quiet place to relax between baseball games at the Dreams Park. We truly enjoyed the history, charm and character that the house had to offer...it made us feel far away from home. It was wonderful to have so many bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate our group, and we enjoyed talking and spending time together in the large living area. The window AC units in each bedroom were a lifesaver, as we had temperatures in the 90's each day during our week...apparently an unusual heat wave for upstate NY;) It was terrific having Hyde close by to welcome us and answer questions and address issues that popped up during our stay. We would definitely recommend the cottage to family and friends.
