Hastings House Rental Photos and Description

1890-Built Cottage in Scenic Area, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Looking for lodging in Hastings or near Prescott, Red Wing, and the St. Croix/Mississippi Rivers? Why stay in a hotel when you can book this 1890 Cottage in the heart of Hastings!? The location is within easy walking distance to the historic downtown and the Mississippi River. It is also convenient to St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the many miles of renowned scenery in the river valleys.

****** NEED TEMPORARY HOUSING THIS WINTER? - We're currently looking for a preferred continuous renter from Mid-January through May 2017 (or a good part of this timeframe). If you have a temporary work assignment or a transition during this period, please inquire!

For shorter-term stays... SEE RATE BREAKS for staying more nights and please check for available dates (use the calendar buttons on this Web page). Also, NOTE: We will be happy offer a 2-night rental deal for an appropriate rate. ******

Built in 1890, and extensively remodeled more than 100 years later, the house has 1 BR on the ground floor (king bed), 2 BRs upstairs, and full bathrooms on both levels. It has plenty of space indoors and out for a small group, including a fully-equipped kitchen, dining room, living room, main floor laundry, front porch (with table and chairs), back patio, and an extra-large backyard. The location provides outstanding access to recreational and scenic attractions and is a great base from which to enjoy the rivers and many miles of exceptional trails.

Need to stay in touch and entertained? We provide a WiFi connection, basic cable TV (living room and main bedroom), a huge selection of DVDs, Netflix access, and many books. The house also features a classic 70s-era Yamaha stereo receiver with a connection for your portable and switchable speakers in both the living room and kitchen.

Hastings is a historic river community with vibrant downtown businesses, classic cars on cruise nights (every two weeks in summer), and many other special community events. Local and nearby attractions include shopping and dining, the 1860 LuDuc Mansion/Estate (open for tours in season), Mississippi River parklands, Vermillion Falls/Gorge Park, and many other cultural and recreational sites. Hastings is located ideally for access to the Twin Cities (30 minutes from the airport and the Mall of America) while also convenient to Minnesota’s most scenic rivers, including Lake Pepin and the bluff country to the southeast. Nearby river towns include Afton, Prescott (WI), Welch, Red Wing, Lake City, and Pepin (WI).

*** Summer 2017 News... New walking and bike trails on and around the Hastings Bridge are completed, as well as major downtown and riverfront park improvements. Several miles of other paved trails are also new throughout the area. Downtown Hastings and the bridge are located only blocks from the rental (see photos). ***

In addition to outstanding boating, fishing, and swimming, nearby parks/attractions include Levee Park next to the bridge, Spring Lake Park Reserve (Schaar’s Bluff), Lock & Dam # 2 (and adjacent trails/parks), Carpenter Nature Center, St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, Freedom and Kinnickinnic State Parks (in WI), several golf courses, and countless other parks with abundant paved and hiking trails. In winter, there are many miles of cross-country ski trails and downhill skiing at Welch Village or Afton Alps, both within about 20 minutes. For touring ideas, look online for the Great River Road, including the Wine Tour, leading you to many nearby wineries and orchards. Contact us; we’ll be happy to provide more information!

About Doug

Ann, Doug, & Family - We enjoy boating and swimming on the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers, bicycling around Hastings, and downhill or cross-country skiing at Welch Village and throughout the area. Doug was also involved in planning/design for the new Hastings Bridge since 2008, with the project completed in 2014.

Doug purchased this house in 2011

Why Doug chose Minnesota

We have a long family history of boating and canoeing on the area's lakes and rivers. We keep our boat at this house and enjoy the access Hastings provides to both the metro area and to the wilds and small towns in the river valleys. Please feel free to ask us about things to do.

What makes this house unique

The St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers provide the best recreation areas and scenery found in the Twin Cities Metro region. Hastings is an ideal location from which to enjoy the whole area!

Guestbook comments from the owner

From Guestbook: Jan-Mar 2013--Coldest winter in MN in over 5 years! I questioned my sanity for moving here; but this little house made it easy.

Perfect setup for my transition from Indiana to Minnesota. I brought clothes and that was about it!

Everything works - it was simply a great place to stay. My heartfelt thanks go to Doug & Ann for allowing me the privilege of staying in the Hastings Cottage. Please take care of my first MN home!

Warm...inviting...just like home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 11 nights in the cottage and found the property to be comfortable, warm, safe and very enjoyable! We came to Minnesota for the Ryder Cup and other sights in the area and our trip was everything we hoped it would be!

Thanks again for providing such an amazing place! We hope to come back one day!

The property was very conveniently located. Close to walking trails, downtown, and easy access to highways. The house was spacious and comfortable. Well-stocked. Quiet neighborhood. Would definite rent this again in the future.

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable cottage with everything you need! My son and I, and my sister and her daughter stayed for a week this summer and had a great time! Charming small town, yet close to the Twin Cities. Lots to do in the area. We walked by the river every morning. We enjoyed the fire pit in the back yard in the evenings. Bedrooms are spacious. Kitchen had everything we needed to prepare a few light meals. A/C kept house nice and cool. There was a great DVD collection for the younger one. Doug was so friendly, accommodating, and easy to communicate with. It was a pleasure to stay at their home. Will definitely be back!

Felt like home

  • 5 of 5

This accurately described cottage was quaint, clean, comfortable and in a friendly neighborhood. The modern facilities in this home combined a touch of history with life in 2016. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the evenings. We would caution anyone with small children that the street is the primary street into the larger neighborhood and is busy but there is plenty of room in the backyard for small children to romp worry free. The “rules” of the house were clear and indicated a well maintained home. Working with Doug was very, very easy. He answered our questions promptly and made himself available during our stay in case we had problems, which we did not. The City of Hastings offers many natural wonders on the Mississippi River. We enjoyed our daily walks in several parks that offered a tremendous view of the bridge and told the history of Hastings. We enjoyed our week there and we think you would too.

Owner's Response: Thank you for a thoughtful review! We appreciate that you reinforced the many features that come with the property and location. In the years we've been owners, there have in fact been many additions and upgrades to the area's parks, trails, and the historic-area streets. And more will be finished soon!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review! We did make a handful of upgrades to the property this year (kitchen, main floor bath, and furnishings) and we will continue to invest. Downtown Hastings also has nice projects in the mix, with new park/trail spaces fall 2015 and several new shops now open.

Hastings Cottage

  • 5 of 5

After looking for extended stay accommodations at hotels for a pending professional move to the area, I realized there must be another way to find long-term stay options that would feel more like home (not to mention less expensive). I searched VRBO and found the Hastings Cottage. The price was perfectly furnished for my 90+ day stay. The cottage was clean and just the right communication from Doug left me feeling more at home than other accommodations. The commute into the Twin Cities metro area was also reasonable when relating it to the price. Thanks Doug! I will mention this option if other new colleagues find themselves in a similar professional move situation.
