Every Angler’s Dream Right on the Chesapeake Bay!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is ideal for a couple or a small family and is heavenly for anglers! If you’re into fishing search no more! This is the place for you!

The cottage was clean and cozy, has the biggest screened in porch on Deal Island and the fishing couldn’t have been better! The TV had all the channels that we love and the owners couldn’t have been better! Bob gave us the WIFI password; WIFI is quite rare at Deal Island rentals. At Bob and Maureen’s cottage, it works best by the window next to the dining table, get as close as possible to the window. It also works well behind the cottage, like where we had our car parked.

We must have caught over 100 fish during our 4-day stay right from the dock a few feet from the cottage!! We caught 13 different species!! Tons of spot, sometimes even two per cast, over a dozen croakers, 1 eel, 2 rays (a sting ray and a cow-nosed ray), the cow-nosed ray weighed no less than 50 lbs and took 41 minutes to get on the dock and release, we actually timed it!! One smallish striper (released), one huge speckled trout and another smaller one, two black drums, 2 flounders, one crab on a spinning real!! 2 puffers, 1 bunker and two oyster toadfish!

We couldn’t believe the number and variety of fish we caught from Bob and Maureen’s cottage!! We were so excited all throughout our trip! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook some of our freshly caught fish and the dock had a fish cleaning table and 4 dock holders!! We couldn’t have wished for anything more. Thank you so much Bob and Maureen for sharing!

A simple, quiet, cute little cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at the cottage! For being a young family of 5, our little ones were never bored. We wanted relaxation and peace and we got it. My only concern for this place was the comfort. The cottage is very simple, maybe a more comfortable couch would do the trick but otherwise it was fine. We did get what we were looking for for our first family vacation. We made sure our little ones had plenty to do besides just fishing, there was plenty of outdoor space to play . We would definitely come back again.

Birding, kayaking and hospitality on Deal Island

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week of the best kayaking and beautiful sunsets. Maureen & Bob's cottage on Deal Island is just as described -- a vintage waterfront cottage. It is clean and kept in good repair, but it is simple and rustic. I don't hesitate to rate our stay as 5-stars, but the cottage itself is not the 5-star part, because it's, well, simple and rustic. The waterfront end of the cottage is a very large screened porch, one of our top priorities on vacation. From the porch we watched watermen hauling in and re-setting their crab pots in the early morning. The fishing dock is beautiful, even if you are not fishing. You can buy fresh crabs from the local dealer. The cottage's kitchen is basic, but it does have a big crab pot -- the most important item. This is a great place for birding and seeing wildlife. A pair of ospreys were nesting in the pines down the road. Bob and Maureen were gracious hosts, inviting us to go kayaking with them along a well-marked marsh trail (well-marked thanks to Bob, by the way). We brought our own kayaks, which gave us flexibility to go to several locations. Bob was THE source of information on where to kayak and where to put in. The marshes are amazing -- blue sky above, the sound of grass in the wind and marsh wrens singing, the dark water bubbling with blue crabs, a water snake zig-zagging by. For a very different experience, the Pokomoke River is shaded by tall trees. We put in at the Winter Quarters municipal golf course, where you can use the restrooms and get a snack, then kayaked up the Pokomoke to the Dividing Creek. We also recommend the hike through a cypress grove in Pokomoke State Forest. So, in summation: a clean, no-frills cottage for nature-lovers and those who love the peace and unique character of the Eastern Shore.

Loved the dock! Fishing, sunsets and relaxing!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay so much! We sat on the dock and fished and read and watched the boats go by. We used our crab pot and caught some nice sized crabs! The tall pines out back provided a wonderful setting to read. Such a laid back kind of place. Last time we came we rented kayaks from our host and enjoyed a wonderful trip he sent us to!

Total Relaxation

  • 4 of 5

The sunsets were absolutely breathtaking! We were able to relax, unwind and disconnect--just what we were looking for. The AC struggled a bit to keep up with the excessive heat (indexes in the 100s) but the breezes off the water on the screen porch were absolutely delightful. We saw Eagle, Osprey, Dolphins and crabs and enjoyed watching the boat traffic--barges, crabbers.... We loved the natural setting and were so pleased with how pleasant Bob & Maureen were--even to the point of Bob bringing us a flashlight and oil lamp when a storm knocked the power out--at 10:30 at night. What service!!!

Deal Island is on the Southern end of Maryland's Eastern shore, on the Chesapeake Bay. It is often said about the island that 'it is not the end of the world, but you can see it from here.' The island is home to many birds. In our front yard we have seen eagles, herons and brown pelicans. Egerts , red winged black birds and blue heron cranes are just of few of the species that inhabit the island. The island has a large protected wetland area. There are several areas to launch a boat or a kayak,my favorite. The fishing is great out on the Tangier Sound. The kayaking is awesome. It brings you face to face with the many birds on the island.

Needless to say we think we have the best crabs available, fresh out of the water. The soft shell crabs are in high demand by restarents and seafood houses. If you are fortunate enough to be on the island during oyster season, you can enjoy the famous Chesapeake oyster fresh off of the boat.

Other Activities: visit a live crab shed and see the crabs at all stages of development
