This is the sixth year our family and friends have rented the house. We love (1) it's proximity to the ferry, (2) it's proximity to Vineyard Haven town center, (3) the size, (4) and the layout of the house.
The house is located one block from the town center and two blocks from the ferry. Each bedroom has a private bath. There's a lot of "hang out" space indoors and outdoors.
Over the past several years we've noticed that the house has not been maintained properly. There are many pesky concerns: not working blinds, missing closet door knobs missing, mold growing in the air vents and refrigerators, televisions not working in certain bedrooms, insufficient numbers of night stands, no toilet brushes in the bathrooms, broken garbage disposal, broken wine cooler, broken front door lock, broken roof deck lock and more. We tolerated these relatively minor annoyances.
This year we had to bear the brunt of years of plumbing neglect. The septic system was clogged. Our water had to been turned off and we were unable to use the basement shower and toilet for several days.
Our annoyance was compounded by the fact that the parts needed to complete the work were on hand (meaning: he understood repairs were needed and did not complete them before we arrived or upon our arrival). In addition, it took three days for the plumbing to be fixed -- which resulted in one or more of our party remaining on site to receive the plumber.
When we asked the owner to adjust our bill he responded by letting us know he'd given us a deep discount (not true) and the plumbing work cost him $2,500 (a reflection of the level of repairs that were needed).
Our family and friends will be returning to the vineyard next year. It's out most anticipated vacation. However, we will not be returning to this house.
