Monterey House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Everyone says, 'WOW what a GREAT view' we have of the lake and we are only 40 feet from the water. Our home is well equipped and conducive to a comfortable stay. Enjoy our wrap around deck for relaxing or dining. The open airy living room/dining room combination with cathedral ceilings also features a full size wood fireplace for those cool summer evenings.

Stroll down to the lake to enjoy sunbathing or fishing from the large dock. Or canoe or kayak on the lake. The fishing is excellent and we have caught lake trout, large and small mouth bass.

The house is located on a quiet private road. It has a queen size bed in the master bedroom, a queen bed in one guest room and 2 twin beds in the second guest room.

Minutes from Monument Mountain and the Appalachian Trail for great day hikes. And we are close to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, and other cultural attractions as well as outlet shopping and other entertainment events.

Lovely view.

  • 3 of 5

I've been renting on Garfield for three years and on another lake nearby for 30 years. I thought that the cottage was in a nice location and had a great porch with a lovely view. The negatives are, it is small so don't try to have a bunch of guests. The kitchen table seats four. You CAN get a few more at the nice table on the porch. Technically, there are two bathrooms but the second bathroom is in the basement level, which is unfinished and kind of a mess. I let my husband use it occasionally. No one could sleep down there, very musty, too. Not finished. It COULd be nice if the owner decides to fix it up. It was great that there were kayaks there and a couple of canoes. However, maybe it's just 2016, BUT no one has mentioned in the reviews how icky the water is from the shore and the dock. So bad that I went in it only twice and my husband refused to go in at all. We went to the little public beach instead, which was very nice. But a big part of why we rent on the lake is so we can not just look at it but use it right from the cottage. That was a huge disappointment for us. I think that the quiet cove that the house is on may be a contributing factor in the milfoil, weeds and muck all over. Not only that but there is a weird tarp staked down in the water that feels like a spongy trampoline under your feet. I've never experienced anything like it before. The property is well maintained, although my daughter told me her room wasn't dusted at all, so she did it when we got there. Monterey is a great little town, the lake is pretty, the bedrooms were small but fine and people are very friendly. Nice neighbor, too. I think it would depend on what you are looking for. I've rented so many years that I have certain expectations: I want a larger table to eat at, maybe a half bath if not two full baths, and most of all, a nice clean lake to seem in. If you are a small group and don't mind driving over to the public beach, it's fine.

Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

We spent a week here with our son, daughter-in-law and twin 7-year old grandsons. The house is clean, well cared-for and comfortable. Lots of windows with good ventilation and natural light. The front porch has a nice roof overhang that makes it a great place for al fresco meals or games or hanging out in wet weather. Beds are comfy. Having 2 bathrooms is a plus with that many people in the house. Bring your own body wash and shampoo. Kitchen is in good shape, with a fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, and Mr. Coffee that takes ground coffee. (Don't expect to use your K-cups.) Washer and dryer in the basement. There is a TV and a satellite dish, but there was no signal while we were there. As a backup, there are a ton of DVDs for movies.

Lake Garfield is beautiful. Not very deep. Has a fair amount of bottom vegetation - but pretty good fishing and wonderful for boating - kayaks to powerboats. In front of this property, the lake is shallow and doesn't lend itself to diving or jumping off the dock. But the dock is a great place to sit and enjoy morning coffee.

There are two canoes and, I think, 3 kayaks. (We brought our own kayaks.) There's also a small aluminum rowboat that would be a good fishing platform.

There is a nice 4 burner gas grill and a firepit. Make sure to pick up dry firewood at the Monterey General Store downtown on the way to the place. DO NOT BRING FIREWOOD FROM OUT OF STATE. Massachusetts does not want you to accidentally import the invasive Emerald Ash Borer with firewood you bring from home!

I'm told AT&T phones work OK here. We have Verizon. Service at 1 bar is sporadic - and forget about 4G ... BUT isn't that why you go on vacation? to get AWAY from the darned thing?

Serenity Now

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week with my family and my dog at this beautiful lakeside home. We have been renting in the area for many years. This was the best by far.

The house is right on Lake Garfield. There is a dock for boating and swimming and it's a great place to take a swim. The house is on a quiet cove on the lake. Great spot to fish or bird watching.

The porch is outrageous. What a pleasure to go outside in the morning and enjoy the lake views and watch the birds at the many feeders. The perfect spot for coffee. We also used the gas grill often and loved having a fire pit.

The inside was very clean and comfortable. The beds were fine and the air conditioning was a big plus. The kitchen is fully stocked.

The location is excellent. Maybe a mile to town and the general store with it's delicious baked goods.

A short drive to Great Barrington, Lenox and Lee. Many good restaurants in the area and plenty of places to enjoy nature.

We loved this house and I will gladly rent it again in the future.

Lovely waterfront house on gorgeous lake

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with the charm of this lovely house right on Lake Garfield. The new blonde pine panelling was not only bright and clean, but it permeated the house with the lovely aroma of pine. The living room/kitchen area boasted windows on 3 sides giving glorious views of the lake. The house is clean and decorated in a cozy fashion, and the large deck was a joy early in the morning for that first cup of tea and throughout the day in either shade or sun. There were many bird feeders hanging on the porch and trees and we saw a great many birds. Lake Garfield is very beautiful and my family used the 2 kayaks and the canoe to explore it. This part of the lake is in a 5-mile an hour, no wake zone and was quiet and beautiful even when the lake was busier with boats. There is a beach directly across the lake from the house for swimming. The owner is very pleasant and he called after we had settled in to make sure that we had everything we needed. We enjoyed our stay at this house and would definitely stay there again.

Lake Garfield - GREAT!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week of fishing, bird watching, peace and quiet in this comfortable home right on the water! We loved the covered deck to "kick back" and watch the world go by. We explored Great Barrington and other areas in the Berkshires. We plan a return trip next year!

Great place for a vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Loved spending the week at this lovely house right on the lake. We enjoyed the fishing and boating. The boating equipment was wonderful - 2 kayaks, a canoe and a rowboat. Even when we didn't feel like being on the lake, it was wonderful to sit and relax on the porch and look out on the lake. The house is very homey and comfortable, especially the beds and the linen, and the kitchen was fully stocked with plenty of pots and pans and dishes etc. The house is centrally located so we were able to experience many other areas of the Berkshires. Had a great week!

PS.The extra bathroom in the basement was a plus - which is not advertised.
