About the property

Ten Acre, Very Private Estate W/ Five Bedrooms, Four Baths, Three Living Areas

Nonostante, is a beautiful, gated, 10 acre estate in Driftwood, Texas nestled into an extremely private, wooded forest, along the banks of a private pond. Only minutes from Dripping Springs, Wimberley and Austin make it very convenient to everywhere. The main house has five bedrooms, is adorned with antiques, exotic animal trophies and can sleep twelve comfortably. This Texas Hill Country property is unique, elegant, charming and very comfortable. Its best described as a TEXAS-FRENCH thing!

The tennis court with basket ball goal will keep you in shape while here....or try kayaking or canoeing on the stocked, private pond.

While only 8 miles from the Austin city limits, it feels like you are 100's of miles away from any urban area when sitting on one of the many stone patios or porches overlooking the pond and tennis court or lying in one of the hammocks or canoeing/kayaking. The home is only 20 miles from the COTA / Formula One track, 20 minutes from Down Town Austin and five minutes from various vineyards, wedding venues, wineries, THE SALT LICK BBQ. The historic shopping mecca of Wimberley is only a few miles away as is the Blanco River & Dripping Springs.

The ten acre estate offers walking trails where you will see deer, rabbits, squirrels, various bird species, the two barn cats, named cat one and cat two and Spike, a rescue dog that greets all visitors and will be part of your stay. He is 13, very friendly and stays outside. The three living areas in the home provide comfort and seating for many. The game room boasts a 72' tv, sound system, pin ball, billiards, xbox, card table and fully equipped bar. The tennis court is regulation size and completely fenced.

Depending on the season, horses may be housed at the on site barn, where, depending on the date, riding can be arranged.

Nonostante just feels good. It is quaint yet sophisticated, simple yet elegant, spacious yet homey. The estate has hosted various weddings, corporate events, reunions, art shows, wine tastings and more.

The master bedroom looks out onto the small lake and has its own bath complete with jacuzzi tub, shower, private exit and outdoor shower. The Hidden bedroom and the Study bedroom share a bath and each have a double bed and a roll away. The Study has its own, private entrance. The Front Guest room has a double bed and shares a bath with the Back Guest room which has two, twin beds.

The game room has two, large, comfortable sofas and two roll-away beds that are great for kids.

There are two, full service, pull through, 50 amp RV pads on the property. These located out near the barn and come in handy for extra sleeping areas for reunions or retreats.

Flooding in the Spring of 2017 damaged parts of the property. The main house, that is offered for rental, was not affected and is fully functional in every way. The grounds, including the tennis court, did sustain damage and are in the process of being repaired.

About JJ & Sheila Shaw (On Site managers)

The owners moved to Austin in the early 80s, married and raised their three children here at Nonostante, where they still spend about half their time. It makes them very happy to have others enjoy this beautiful piece of the world while they are away. I am JJ. My wife Sheila and I work exclusively for the owners and are the caretakers of their three properties. Nonostante is the only property offered for short term rentals. We are extremely familiar with the property and all its amenities and have managed it for over 10 years. We and the owners welcome our guests and our goal is to provide you with an absolutely great value while at Nonostante and we appreciate your business.

Why JJ & Sheila Shaw (On Site managers) chose Texas Hill Country

The owners chose this particular piece of property many years ago, when Driftwood and The Salt Lick were considered way out in the country. They wanted to escape the traffic & city lights and found this property on which to build. They cleared, cleaned out and contoured the rocky, narrow, wet weather creek and improved the 1940's era damn to make the three acre, private pond, whose lake level fluctuates based on the weather. They remodeled the 60+ year old ranch house, trying hard to preserve the 1920s, Texas Ranch-house look and feel. We think Nonostante is exactly that. It is warm, comfortable and inviting. The sprawling home allows many guests to be on site yet never feel crowded. The area in which Nonostante is located was, at one time, a large, 1,000 acre cattle ranch and dairy operation. It is said that the various, nearby springs that provide water to the many creeks, were the reason many Indian settlements existed in the area all the way up to the turn of the century. Now, with access to the best of both worlds, Nonostante is far enough from the city to still see the stars at night yet close enough to be downtown in just a few minutes. The large oak, cedar elm and pecan trees tower over the ten acres and add to the 'hidden resort' type feel that exists. The entire property is fenced and an electronic gate can be closed for ultimate security. Greyrock, a semi-private golf club, is almost walking distance and the Salt Lick, Trattoria Lisina and many vineyards and wedding venues are within a 5 minute drive.

What makes this estate unique

The privacy is unbelievable and the peacefulness can't be fully appreciated until you are here sitting on one of the many porches or patios or lying in a hammock under the giant trees. The close proximity to downtown Austin as well as Driftwood and all the vineyards and Wimberly make Nonostante a great getaway.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This place is unbelievable. We had 12 people in the home and nver felt crowded. It is beautiful. We had deer come up to the pond each evening. The home is a one story rambling ranch house and is a bit dated but really homey and spread out. The kids had a blast in the kayaks and swimming in the pond. we played tennis, basketball, horse shoes and made a big fire in the fire pit each night. Really cool place.

Excellent Customer Service

  • 5 of 5

After receiving a notification from another location that their property had been sold and was no longer available for our wedding in October, I contacted JJ about their location. This was a very stressful time for us as I had already booked all the vendors and need to settle on a new location quickly. JJ responded very quickly, was so kind and helpful. He provided an estimate for holding our wedding and all the associated information that I could have wanted. While we decided on a larger venue which could sleep all family guests, his customer service was just what I needed. I would definitely contact JJ about Driftwood.

Beautiful, but not luxurious for the price

  • 2 of 5

We rented this place for 7 adults and 4 kids to be conveniently near the Salt Lick Pavilion for the Old Settler's Music Festival. I expect to pay a premium for luxury. That is NOT what we got for the money at this rental. The owners have probably not set foot inside this house or spent any money on it for at least 15 years or more, and it shows. On the positive side, the outdoor space is lovely and well maintained by the property managers. Our kids and dog had a fun time running around. We went for a canoe ride, using the two canoes on the property. The back seat on the largest canoe was broken, so it was pretty difficult to steer. Bring your own life jackets if you have small children. There were two kid-sized life jackets available at the house. The pond is pretty overgrown, so I don't think swimming in it would be fun or healthy. But, there are some large fish that you can catch and release if you bring your own gear (we did not). Also, do not bother to bring your tennis racquets. There is no net on the tennis court pictured at the side of the house, which was really disappointing. There is a basketball net, but the basket balls available have no air in them or any way to pump them up. Bring your own if your kids like playing outside. Inside, the common areas are clean but filled with decor (think faux plants on every single surface) caked with dust. The bedrooms and bathrooms are another story. The bedding is very worn and looks like it came from a garage sale. The pillows were awful (unusable). The sheets did not fit the beds and came off of the mattresses easily. The blankets are tattered and worn, as were the limited number of towels. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very dusty. There was hair in the sinks and filthy waste bins in the master bathroom splattered with coffee and something sticky. There is a very strange air freshening system that seems to blow into the bathrooms and game room. We won't come back to this house next year. This place really needs a good freshening to be called "luxury".

Owner's Response: After reading your review I would like to apologize if you received any misinformation about the property. We have a full description of the property on all the short term rental sites. We pride ourselves on having a unique location and quaint rental property. Nowhere in the listing does it ever refer to the location as "luxury". Quite the contrary. We descried it as simple, quaint and comfortable. A few items in your review were a concern. The most pressing was the fact that you brought a dog on the property without paying a pet deposit or getting the approval of the owners. This is also after we accommodated your revision of the rental and gave you a discounted price. As far as towels and linens; they are replaced each year and the linen closet has an abundance of towels, sheets & blankets that are available to all guests. After speaking with JJ and Shelia, they did assure me that the cleaning crew had been there before you arrived and that the canoe was not damaged. There are two canoes and two kayaks available for guest use. I think it is also important to note that we keep only the "house side" of the lake mowed and manicured. The far side of the lake we leave completely natural, for the wild life. I am sure you were able to see many deer and other wild life ( raccoons, rabbits etc) in the mornings & evening, from the back patios. We enjoy this very much. As far as the tennis court; You were notified it is being resurfaced after the flood this last spring. We do not provide fishing equipment for liability reasons. We hope you find another rental to your liking next year and agree that you and your party are a better fit somewhere else.

Son's Wedding

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this location turned out to be everything we had hoped it to be. It served as an excellent central location for my son's wedding. We were only minutes away from the venue and chapel. For our stay to have been perfect we would have needed to be able to control the weather.

Great pre-wedding and family get away!!

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 12 had a wonderful time at this beautiful home and property. With all the pressures that come with our son getting married, we were truly able to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing time with him and our family on these scenic grounds. We had a blast watching our grand children feed, catch and release there first fish here. The older kids loved the game room, where many a pool games were played. There were deer grazing near the home in the mornings and evenings. The sun in the morning, moon and stars at night, made such a beautiful reflection off the lake. The location was perfect for the rehearsal dinner at Trattoria Lisina and the wedding at Duchmann Winery. It was really hard to leave and have already talked about booking this home again for a family vacation sometime. Thank you so much for sharing your home with our family. What a blessing it was for us.

Great, Relaxing, Beautiful, private

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time. We were blessed with getting to attend two weddings in one weekend and this place was very close to both venues and the Salt Lick and Tratoria Lisina, where we attended rehearsal dinners. The home is completely hidden from the rest of the world yet close to all the wedding venues. It is very, very spacious and roomy and comfortable and overlooks a quiet pond that is full of fish and a few ducks to entertain you. There are three living areas in the home which was great for our group. We never felt crowed or cramped and even got to ride the owners horses. We did not want to leave and are planning a couples weekend back to the home to fully investigate all the vineyards and brew pubs in the area and to do some shopping in Wimberley.
