About the property

Open & bright 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath. Wonderful indoor & outdoor space

The Cider House is our family run vacation rental. We have 2 vacation rental homes in addition to our house on our 6.5 acre property. Originally orchards and a larger farm, the property retains a rural character with close proximity to locally run markets, farm stands, restaurants, and hot springs. Cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, and plumbs are available to pick from the trees around the house in season. It is just 10 minutes from Durango and 15 minutes drive up the mountain for wildflower viewing, mountain trails, lakes, mountain biking, etc. The autumn colors are amazing.

The Cider House is a sunny open home with a sitting porch and a very large yard with lots of fruit trees. It comes with high speed (60mbs) Wi-Fi Internet, cable TV, board games, Bocce Ball, Ping Pong, and a library of 200+ movies including lots of classic and kids movies. The shelves are stocked with books for all ages, area maps, guide books on hiking, biking, and area activities and historical books on the train and Durango history. It is the perfect location for outdoor fun and just short drive to Durango or Purgatory.

Hermosa is just North of the City of Durango in the Animas river valley. Hot springs, restaurants, grocery, etc. are all nearby. The area has a rural neighborhood feel with houses scattered about and lots of open space, forest and farmland. We live in a house on the North side of the 6.5 acre property and are available anytime if you need anything.

The Cider House is a custom net-zero energy home. It was built with green and low VOC materials and paint. The master bedroom has a luxurious pillow top king size bed and is connected to a master bathroom. Also upstairs there is another full bathroom, the 2nd bedroom with a queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom that can sleep up to five with two full beds (bunk) and a pull out twin trundle bed. This beautifully furnished smoke free house has a fully equipped kitchen with granite countertops and bar, custom cabinets, high end appliances, coffee-maker, grinder, french press, micro, toaster, crock pot, stainless pots and pans, large bar-b-q, etc. etc. The kitchen has everything you need to make a great meal. A high efficiency boiler provides In floor heat throughout the house. Additional bathroom heaters and south facing windows make this a warm, bright and comfortable home.

The house has a large yard/orchard with beautiful mountain and cliff views. There is a Ping Pong table, Bocce Ball set, and other outdoor games. The covered porch with bar-b-q grill and seating opens to a large yard and orchard. In the yard you will find a horse shoe pit and ping pong table and chairs to sit under the trees. Cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, and plumbs are available to pick in season.

Past the orchard and fields you will see the D&SNG Train pass by on its way to Silverton several times a day. The Cider House is just 2 miles from Trimble Hot Springs with pools, massage, and great outdoor space. Drive 2 miles North and you are at James Ranch, the #1 rated restaurant in the area where you can also buy vegetables, meat, eggs, and cheese fresh off the farm. For breakfast or lunch the Hermosa Creek Cafe is just a short walk away. There is also a nice local grocery and a liquor store a few minutes away.

The house can sleep up to 9 in beds. There is queen sofa bed in the TV room that can be closed off via pocket doors from the living room if desired and a pac-n-play for the little ones. We often stay in vacation rentals and strive to make ours one of the best.

We do not allow pets.

We are local owners that live on the property a few houses away so you can be sure if you need anything or have any problems, we can accommodate your needs. We have 3 boys ages 12-14 that love making new friends, playing soccer, hide and seek, tag and other outdoor fun on the property.

About Chris Hall

I grew up in Durango and moved back in 2000. It's a great place to live and raise our 3 boys. Michelle and I love the outdoors and spend lots of time hiking, camping, rafting, etc. The winter brings skiing and hockey.

Why Chris Hall chose Southwestern Colorado

This 6.5 acre property was once a much bigger farm established in the 1890's. Despite the growth in this area it still retains a rural feel while being just a few minutes away from Durango. There are dozens of mature fruit trees on the property including apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, and cherry and lots of space for the kids to run around. We built our house in the north orchard in 2004 and I built the Cider House in the South orchard in 2011.

What makes this house unique

I built this home in 2011 using quality materials to create a comfortable and modern energy efficient house. In floor heating in stained concrete floors and good insulation keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All new appliances, furniture, beds, etc.. It is sunny and bright and it is just a comfortable house. The covered porch is so great for sitting, eating, and looking out at the trees, the mountains, and the steam train chugging by in the distance.

most excellent. We cooked many meals, ate apples until we were full, chased

chickens, enjoyed the bucks in yard, played in the "little rivers" in front

and loved it! I considered making my amazing apple crisp (we are from prime

apple country) but eh, who wants to buy all that stuff and cook on

The house was easy to find. We enjoyed our stay. The house location was perfect.

We had no problems at all and the house was stocked with everything we needed. We saw deer every day from the back patio. We had no problem finding the house . The city of Durango is very easy to navigate. Chris was very helpful and gave suggestions about the best pizza.

The Woodlands

Train Trip for mom and kids

The house was cozy, well appointed, and utilitarian. The location was prime, for viewing mountains, seeing narrow gauge train pass by, to grocery store, Durango, and other other sites. I only had a minor issue, the grass needed to be cut according to my dad, but it does not change my overall impression. The owner was easy going and communicated well throughout the week.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you had a good stay. We were out of town on vacation before your stay and my dad was supposed to come over and mow but hurt his knee. We did get it mowed during your stay, but I do apologize for the few days it was high and not mowed.

A perfect home base in Durango

The cider house was great. It was by far the most "like home" place we stayed on our trip (which included four HomeAway homes). Comfy beds. Good pillows. Well furnished kitchen. Everything we needed and all within ten minutes is Durango. We could not have asked for more. Thanks!

Our White Christmas at Cider House

I loved Cider House in Durango. The owner was very nice & personal. He also told us not to hesitate to call him if we needed anything. The house is very comfortable. We are a family of eight. The kitchen has everything you need. All appliances are top quality & all worked great. The floor heating works really well & we were totally Nieve about it. It was easy. We watched the deer come up to the house every morning & evening. Multiple birds also visited including the comical magpies. I would like to go back when the orchard is blooming. I know it's beautiful. I recommend staying at Cider House if you're in Durango. Cider House is a home away from home. I teared up when we departed.

Beautiful home!

Chris's house is gorgeous and well-appointed. It is a very convenient drive to Durango and it was fun to hear the train going by in the morning and afternoon. The house is beautiful--new and perfectly clean. The woodwork is fantastic and everything was even more lovely than in the pictures. We had a great stay and Chris was very helpful with recommendations. We stayed a week and ate at the nearby Hermosa Creek Cafe and James Ranch and enjoyed both. Hermosa Creek Trail was very close and a great place to walk the dog. The house was fully stocked with dishes and appliances and books and DVDs. What a great base for Durango adventures!
