This is a fun, unique unit with a casual treehouse feel. Perfect for the relaxed guest looking for a beautiful place to chill. We use it as a music studio and hangout, for teaching, jamming, watching the game and hanging out with friends. It's the kind of place where you can really relax, spread out, and put your feet up on the furniture. You don't have to worry about playing the TV too loud or knocking over any antiques. Guys, hipsters, free spirits, teens and families with young children tend to love it.
The Studio consists of an older one-bedroom quest cottage with a new great room added on. This great room is quite astonishing, with 20' ceilings and walls of windows on three sides looking out over woodlands. It has a large HD flatscreen TV with premium cable package. Off the great room is small deck with a new Weber grill and seating, looking out over the woods.
The whole unit has a cool, rec-room/ man-cave vibe, with prints by Banksy and a beat-up painted wood floor in the great room. It has several fun, offbeat features: a leftover exterior window between rooms, 1970's kitchen cabinets that look like they were designed by the Flintstones, etc. We've made sure the unit is entirely set for comfort, though: the bedroom features a new top-quality full-sized latex mattress, for example, and there's newly installed HVAC.
In the bedroom there's a dresser but no closet; guests hang their clothes on a portable garment rack. The bathroom is older and definitely needs renovating but is clean, with a shower.
Sun streams through four french doors with a garden view into the eat-in kitchen, which seats 4. The kitchen is small and older but fully stocked and fine for basic cooking. Adjacent is a small sitting area. There is reliable wireless internet throughout.
There's a twin bed with trundle in the far corner of the great room, that sleeps an extra two people. The trundle bed is best for a child as it has a typical trundle mattress (not very thick). It's in a quiet, private, dark corner - good for sleeping, though not sound isolated. In another corner of the great room is a small office area.
The Studio is totally private but in a sweet, upscale, safe area with neighbors on all sides. The location couldn't be more ideal. It is a minute from the main thoroughfare Sir Francis Drake, two minutes from charming downtown Kentfield, 5 minutes from the highway, twenty minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, 30 minutes from San Francisco and 40 minutes from wine country. It is in the prettiest part of one of the most beautiful counties in the country - Marin - and close to everything. But here's the kicker: it feels totally removed, with no traffic noise and total privacy. A secret oasis!
The Studio comes with one designated parking place. Street parking nearby is extremely limited, and parking of additional cars on the property even for a short time is not permitted. Laundry facilities are available on the property, in a small laundry room for rentals on the basement floor of the main house.
Please note: Most of the musical instruments in the photos have been removed for their own protection, sorry!
I am a native of Marin, and love everything about it! Hiking, beach barbecues on Muir Beach, Mountain Home Theater, burritos in the Mission, Fairfax Scoop, wine tasting in Napa... the list goes on and on.
I love Marin even more as I took a long detour from it. Our three children were born and raised in NYC, and I persuaded the family to move back here just last August. Quite the change, brownstone Brooklyn to nature-filled Marin! We love both but are so happy to have landed here.
I am an architect, an artist, and a stay-at-home Mom. I love yoga, hiking, hanging with the family, reading on the porch, and dinner with friends. My husband Sandy is a professional musician and teacher. We are a relaxed, creative family.
My motto? I guess it would be: 'Don't sweat the small stuff.'
Jenny Israel purchased this cottage in 2013
A huge attraction of this property is Marin County itself, one of the most magical places on earth. Marin is famous worldwide for it's astounding natural beauty and the huge amount of land protected for public enjoyment. There are few places on the planet where you can hike, mountain bike, surf, sail, horseback ride and camp on thousands of acres of untouched wilderness, all within an hour of a major city. The variety of fun to be had in the area is unmatched: all the restaurants, museums and shopping of SF, the stunning beauty and outdoorsy lifestyle of Marin, plus wine country just 40 minutes north.
Kentfield is a charming little town in central Marin, an area with the mildest, sunniest, most lovely year-round weather you can imagine. It has several very good restaurants, a gourmet market, bike paths, a school with a big field to kick a ball around, and loads of small town charm. It's one of a string of such small towns along the Ross Valley, all very special. I grew up the next town over, in Ross, and have always wanted to come back. Can you tell I love this place?
I first became intrigued with our property - a main house and two cottages, on two acres - when I heard of it's unique history. The main house was built in 1903 and originally served as a retreat for Catholic nuns and laypeople: pews filled the living spaces, and nuns ate at the long narrow dining table. When I visited, I could feel the serenity that permeates every inch of the property.
The cottages, including the Studio, we're built in the '70's during a very different phase of life. Apparently the property became something of a hippy commune, and these cottages were built to house the overflow of friends and travelers. We've kept some of the fun 70's features in the original cottage: hand-hewn open beams on the ceiling, funny cabinetry that looks like it's from the Stone Age, colorful tile in the bathroom. With the soaring great room addition we've tried to maintain the free-spirited, casual vibe.
And the surroundings! Every window looks out on green; almost total privacy; hummingbirds off the porch and the garden in bloom; our own redwood grove down the hill. Does it get any better than this?
This is a lovely cottage for a couple or a single person with easy access to Marin, San Francisco and the North Bay. Everything works well and the owners are very helpful and attentive to any problems. The decor is clean and bright - the kitchen and bathroom have not been remodeled in a while but there is plenty of hot water and complete privacy. I would definitely stay here again.
Beautiful area, nestled in trees providing peace and privacy. The unit was spacious for a studio. Overall very happy with it and would rent again. Small issues: dirty and old pots and pans (maybe fault of cleaner or last renter), tv with basic direct tv cable (no premium package), dirty rugs, one single pretty tight parking spot. These were minor issues and the overall size and location more than made up.
We loved this studio in every way. It offered a very happy mood with large and plentiful windows. It is very open and free feeling. At the dining room table each person had a great view of the beautiful trees or grounds. We also loved the comfort of the bed and quality linens! We had everything we needed in the kitchen and bathroom. The owners are very nice and were very accommodating with all of our needs! We had a wonderful Honeymoon in San Francisco!! 10/21-10/29
We have vacationed and travelled in Europe, Mexico and extensively throughout the US and this is the best! I have told everyone how fabulous this place is. My husband and I were looking for a place to relax; wine tasting by day, then finish up the evening with a home cooked meal (or not) and newly purchased wines. Plus. We make our own breakfasts. It was perfect.
Looks just like the photos; minus the instruments. Nestled among California Oaks - like a treehouse; tranquil and comfortable, in a gated compound. You'd never know that it's right off the main drag and convenient to the 101, shops, Larkspur Ferry - thus San Francisco and day trips into wine country. No noise at all. Private. Peaceful. And an added bonus, when we needed to reach Jennifer, she was available. No wait.
There is only one private bedroom, so consider your needs. And one bathroom with a shower; otherwise, it's open concept. I could live there so easily. We will be back!
I loved the musicians studio - yes it is a bit funky and it is a work in progress - but I will readily stay there again. The wall of windows and feeling privacy in the great room were very relaxing! Comparatively, however, the kitchen and dining room - also have a wall of windows - but it faces the driveway. While beautifully landscaped, it is not quite as private. Location is great!
The location and setting were wonderful. I would have to say my biggest concern was the lack of privacy due to no widow coverings, especially in the bathroom. We could see the neighbors in their backyard. You can also see the bathroom through a window in the livingroom. If you can see thrm, they can see you. I realize that part of the charm of this studio is the outdoors, but I would sacrifice that for some bathroom privacy.
Property is centrally located in the charming town of Kentfield, in gorgeous Marin County. Convenient to restaurants and shops, 30 min from San Francisco and 40 min from wine country. The house is 2 minutes from Kentfield town center, with Ambrosia Restaurant, Half-Day Cafe and Woodland Market. We are two minutes from bike paths and a 10 min drive to gorgeous hiking trails.
So much to do here! Check out the restaurants, museums and shopping in SF, only a half-hour drive away. Rent mountain bikes in the next town and explore Marin the high-adreneline way! Take an all day hike on Mount Tamalpias or Point Reyes, through redwood groves and chaparral and huge ocean vistas. See the sea lions, red-tailed hawks, maybe a bobcat if you get lucky! Kayak or stand-up paddleboard on the Bay. Stroll to downtown Kentfield and have one of the best brunches ever at Half-Day Cafe. Take leisurely walk in the lovely hills behind Kentfield. Take a wine-country tour and ship some of your favorites home. Grab dinner and a show at nearby Terrapin Crossroads, and get your Dead on. Or have an elegant dinner at Insalatas, 10 min away. Truly, this property, in this part of Marin County, is just wonderful.
