Just steps from the water, Aloha Cottages are the quintessential oceanfront accommodations - comfy furniture, wide plank wood floors, warm salt air breezes, and ocean views to soothe the soul. The front porch of Sunrise Cottage is a favorite spot for watching the ocean's changing moods (and whales during winter months). A blend of east coast Cape Cod and Hawaiian plantation styles, our vintage cottages are spacious and light with simple furnishings - everything you will need for a relaxing, rejuvenating Kauai get-away.
Fabulous DATES available in SEPTEMBER!! While the summer and later fall are filling up rapidly September, my very favorite month on the island, is still (surprisingly) available. The weather is usually ideal with a peaceful, laid back atmosphere. Don't miss out, book your dates today!
THE INTERIOR: French doors and large picture windows in the living/dining room of the main house afford panoramic ocean views. Two of the three bedrooms have queen-size beds and the same unforgettable ocean view. The third bedroom, furnished with two twin beds (optional King upon request), is a quiet retreat. Sunrise Cottage comfortably accommodates up to six people.
NEED MORE ROOM?? Add Moonrise Guest Cottage for another bedroom and bath to accommodate up to 2 more people, a total of up to 8 in both cottages (4 bedrooms/3 baths). Please contact me if you would like to include the guest cottage in your reservation and I will send you a second payment request to cover the rental fees ($1050 per week), taxes and cleaning ($125). You will NOT be charged the VRBO reservation fee for the guest cottage. Use both cottages together for a group of 7-8 friends or a multi-generational family gathering.
Recently remodeled Moonrise Guest Cottage has the charm of a bamboo canopy bed and peek-a-boo ocean view. The open, white interior is accented with soothing ocean blues for a fun, tropical ambience. A spacious food prep area (with refrigerator/freezer, coffeemaker, toaster, blender, microwave) is perfect for simple meals, along with the large outdoor stainless steel grill with propane side burner.
The beautifully remodeled kitchen of the main house offers gourmet cooks as well as microwavers a spectacular oceanview. The stainless steel countertop, checkerboard floor, and glassfront cabinets are reminiscent of vintage cottage decor. The upgraded appliances and granite-topped peninsula make it a cook's dream.
Both cottages are equipped with WiFi, flat-screen TV and DVD player, all linens including beach towels, ceiling fans, down and faux-down bed pillows.
THE PATH: An exciting NEW feature is the Seaside Walking and Biking Path that runs along the ocean, right past the property. Visitors enjoy the Path for exploring the coastline, past Kapaa Town, beaches and amazing ocean vistas. Kapaa has been voted one of America's 15 Prettiest Small Cities (Aug 2013) by Forbes Magazine, come and see why.
THE BEACH: Just in front of the cottage, less than 30 steps across the front lawn, is the soft sand and warm waters of 'Baby Beach,' one of the safest swimming beaches on the island for small children. Here you can enjoy kayaking (you'll find a double kayak at the cottage), snorkeling, or even SCUBA for lobster in season. The quiet waterfront vintage neighborhood is just a short stroll from Kapaa Town, with charming shops and restaurants.

About Susan Hoerner
Charlie and I have been married for 48 years and have two grown daughters. We divide our time between our cottages on Kauai and Portland, Oregon. Charlie has retired from the high tech world where he was a consultant and trainer. I am a retired graphic designer. Now we like to hike and bike, read and travel.
Susan Hoerner purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Susan Hoerner chose Kapaa
We visited Kauai for the first time in 1996, absolutely loved it, and upon leaving fantasized about living here, if just for a short time. But unlike so many fantasies, this one came true. We rented Sunrise Cottage for 18 months and ultimately purchased the property, soon adding Moonrise Cottage as a second rental. The experience of being right on the ocean is like no other, we love watching the weather cross the sky, the colors and moods of the ocean change. The property is within easy walking distance of Kapaa Town, recently recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America's prettiest small towns (Aug '13), and central to all the many wonderful things to do and see on the island. We love to recommend our favorite places to shop and eat, locally.
What makes this Cottage unique
The front lawn of Sunrise Cottage is situated to enjoy the unforgettable sun and moon rises over the ocean, which we celebrate regularly. We use the new seaside walking/biking path almost every day to walk or bike into town, to Kealia Beach or just for some exercise. The short three mile drive to Sleeping Giant Mountain hiking trail is one of our regular expeditions, giving great cardio and amazing views of the entire eastern shoreline of the island. Our sweet little neighborhood is quiet and tucked away yet convenient for shopping, services and for getting around the island.

We found the perfect place!
Charged with finding's a beach house in Kauai for four couples approaching 70 years old was not easy, but I found the perfect place. Everyone was super happy with the Aloha Cottages - accommodations, location, everything! As a vacation rental owner in SoCal I was especially impressed with the coziness, and attention to detail, the owners accomplished. We all felt like we were staying in someone's home! I know that the idea behind VRBO but not everyone pulls it off like the owner's of this property did. I felt like this had been someones family home for generations, definitely not your typical beach vacation rental. Each and every couple told me they would love to do this again.
Such sweet words of praise, John, thank you so much! We spend several months a year at Aloha Cottages so we have a chance to impart that attention to detail that achieves the "family home" ambience you mention. Of course Kauai's awesome-ness and that fabulous ocean right out front add tremendously!! We would love to welcome you all back again soon!
Loved this house!
We enjoyed a multi-generational family stay at Sunrise and Moonrise Cottages which were perfect for our party of 6 adults and 2 kids. We were celebrating my 70th birthday and my husband’s 75th. As soon as we walked in the front door we felt right at home. The owners have thought of everything to make a stay here so enjoyable from the extremely well stocked kitchen to the beach equipment provided for guests to use. Kapaa is well located for exploring the island as it is in the middle and explore we did. Every day was a new adventure. But we also enjoyed just hanging out at the house, sitting on the front porch watching the ocean while the kids enjoyed swimming at Baby Beach. I am really missing having my morning coffee out on the porch and listening to the ocean as I go to sleep at night. The cottages are a perfect place to stay for a relaxing Hawaiian vacation.
It is so exciting for us to read how much you enjoyed your celebrations, your time on Kauai and our wonderful Aloha Cottages! Nothing could make us happier!! All the things you mention are exactly why we love it there ourselves! Please, come back soon to enjoy another coffee on the front porch! Thank you for taking the time to write a review and letting others know what a magical place it is!
Perfect location for exploring the island
I stayed one week in the Moonrise Cottage as my home base for exploring Kauai. The cottage is just the right size for one or two people. As it is located behind the Sunrise Cottage, there is plenty of privacy and little noise (other than the roosters!) I slept extremely well (mattress is perfectly comfortable) and found the whole experience restful and rejuvenating. The location of the Cottage on the east side, in a quiet residential neighborhood, works well, because it is not a long drive to either the north side or the south side. There are also plenty of places to eat in Kapaa, and you can take long walks on the path right in front of the cottages. I enjoyed waking up early and sitting on the wall next to the ocean as my start to the day. I would most definitely stay here again and would highly recommend Moonrise for anyone travelling to Kauai.
What a lovely review, Beth, mahalo! We are so happy that you so thoroughly enjoyed Moonrise Cottage and our quiet but convenient location. The East Side Coastal Path is one of our favorite things, we use it almost every day to walk along the ocean, stroll into town or to the market. I agree with you, what better way to start the day than relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching the ocean reflect the colors of dawn!
Be sure to rent bikes
Yep its a good as everyone says. We have never used both cottages, but I will tell you that it if someone is using the sunset cottage, they in no way lessen your enjoyment of the sunrise cottage. No need saying more, as the rest of the reviews will let you know its an absolute treasure. As the cottage is located along the bike trail, you get to some occasional people watching. The bike trail takes you along the ocean, past two beach parks, and down town Kapaa. Will be back next year!
Aloha Sheri, and thank you for your glowing review! The cottages are, indeed, a treasure, beloved by so many of our visitors who return year after year. That, to us, is the highest form of praise.
I want to clarify your review... I think you meant to say, "...if someone is using the Moonrise Cottage, they in no way lessen your enjoyment of the Sunrise Cottage." In 18 years all of our visitors have found that to be true.
We rented both Sunrise and Moonrise cottages to celebrate a special birthday with children and grandchildren. We were so pleased that we were able to stay here. It is a spot where people passing by stop to take photos and comment on the beauty of it. We agree. Everything is the highest quality, artistically decorated and completely clean. Susan was a great communicator and made it all easy for us. Thank you. We will always remember our wonderful week.
This kind of review makes us SO happy! It means that you have completely enjoyed yourselves and that you love the cottages as much as we do! We are thrilled that you chose Kauai and Aloha Cottages for your Big birthday celebration, bringing the whole family! Thank you!
Perfect 40th Anniversary Celebration
My husband and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and our duel retirement with a month long trip to Hawaii and Japan. We spent our last travel week in Sunrise Cottage; it was an experience I had been dreaming of since we began the planning of this trip. This home is gorgeous and sits at the edge of the ocean, with only a neighborhood street between the lawn and the water. There is no beach in front of the home, but that is not important. The sunrise and the moonrise are in full view from the veranda. It is just stunning. The kitchen has every gadget anyone might need for cooking. There is a wonderful laundry space with new Samsung washer and dryer. The home is immaculate! In the back, there is a grill (we did not cook) and a lovely private deck. The home is surrounded by palms so privacy is no concern, though the house is located in a neighborhood. Location is perfect for anything you might want to do. There are stores and restaurants within walking distance of the home. We loved the miles long pedestrian walk which began along the water's edge. We could not have been happier. Thank you, Susan, for the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful home in Kauai!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review... we know how valuable it can be to potential visitors to know about others' experience. It is an honor to be part of your 40th anniversary celebration, it sounds like quite a trip! We hope you'll choose to return soon.
At cottage or within walking: SCUBA Diving, Kitesurfing, Boogie Boarding, Whale-watching (in winter months), kayaking (tandem kayak provided); wonderful new Eastside Walking/Biking Path
