Having vacationed for many summers in coastal Maine, I decided to build a permanent home there, where I can enjoy weekends and summer vacations with my daughters and their friends (for now) and where I plan to live during retirement. I fell in love with the natural beauty of Harpswell - with its many fingers and islands, and I love the fact that it is 'off the beaten tourist track.' Everywhere you look there are water views that change with every turn in the road. Harpswell is peaceful, yet so convenient to the amenities of Brunswick, Freeport, Bath and even Portland (just 40 minutes away).
Ellen Glew, owner purchased this house in 2002
It is easy to get to -- just over 2 hours from my primary home in Massachusetts -- and it is situated in one of the most beautiful coastal communities in Maine or anywhere in the U,S. Harpswell has more coastline than any community in the United States -- some 230 miles of shoreline and dozens of islands.
It is a wonderful place to just relax, sit on the float and read a book and watch the last rays of the sun playing on the water. I love eating breakfast out on the balcony, watching the lobster boats and all the wildlife on the water, hiking along trails with spectacular water views; enjoying the warm waters of Harpswell Sound, either swimming or just floating on an inner tube. It is also a great base location from which to explore the many attractions of mid-Coast Maine. For the more adventuresome, it is also a do-able day trip to Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island.
We absolutely loved our stay at your house. The local lobsters and clams are to die for. The layout of your home is so open and airy, and we loved dining on the balcony. The kitchen nook and furnishings are cozy. And the waters of Harpswell Sound are warm -- you can actually stay in the water! Good family fun hiking up the Fairy House trail across the street up to that spectacular cliff walk. Lots to do with nearby shopping at Bean's and the outlets in Freeport, as well as the shops of Bath. Wolf's Neck State Park in Freeport also great for hiking. And for sand and surf, excursions to Reid State Park and Popham Beach are terrific. It's fun to explore the entire mid-coast region -- with trips to Boothbay, Pemquid Light and farther up to Camden and Rockland - best to do that on weekdays to avoid the Route 1 weekend traffic. Movie theaters, mini golf, and bowling in nearby Four Corners also good for family fun.
We really enjoyed our stay in this house. The location was an easy drive to Freeport, Brunswick and Bath, with some beautiful trails nearby.
The house and view of the water are just as lovely as the pictures. We loved being able to see the water from the kitchen, living room, one upstairs bedroom and the upstairs office nook.
We appreciated the thoughtful amenities available in the house (a well-stocked kitchen, boats and life jackets, a board game library, a folder with tons of information on the local area). The house layout was great for a multi-generational family (grandparents can sleep on the first floor with a private bathroom, kids have plenty of space to play upstairs or in the basement).
My family and I have enjoyed our vacations at your home for the past five years and this past summer was no exception! I always found the home clean and comfortable. Bitsy greets us like a old friend. We have never found the rules to be a problem. After all, you are staying in someone's home. The house is so well appointed, we lacked for nothing. We always find ourselves down on the dock where we sit and enjoy a glass of wine or watch the grandkids fish or even better, take the canoe out.
Yes there is some road noise, but there is also a rooster crowing (we look forward to hearing him each year!) and the sound of the breeze in the trees. That same road gives us access to church and the farmers market and many other wonderful things.
The best review I can give, is we keep coming back ---five years and more to come! Thank you Ellen for sharing your home.
Our family of four had a wonderful stay in this beautiful and well-maintained waterfront home. The house is absolutely lovely. Furnishings are interesting, charming, and thoughtful. Floors are gorgeous. The kitchen is well-equipped. Even the dishes are pretty. Beds were great. Everything feels new, clean, and tidy. The amenities were plentiful (an outdoor hot and cold shower for rinsing off, 2 brand-new kayaks plus an old canoe that was perfectly seaworthy although the seats were a bit worn out). There was great internet (we wouldn't have noticed TV screens as they don't interest us, especially when the view out most windows--the water, light, sky-- is far superior). And accessibility to food shopping, to excellent hikes, to ice cream and tourist sites was very, very good. My husband swam in the cove, we kayaked and canoed with seals popping up around us, and we rarely glimpsed any powerboats in the area, leaving it feeling bucolic and private. Most days we had the cove entirely to ourselves. Yes, as a previous reviewer noted, the rules given at the start are a bit daunting, but admittedly most of them make the place better for all. And the tides, as they do in so many houses we have stayed at in Maine, do mean that you have to time boating and swimming to the rhythms of the ocean. Finally, although the house is located on one of the few roads that joins two Harpswell peninsulas and, thus, does have cars on it during the day, the house is situated for living toward the rear and is buffered by trees on both sides, so you have a great sense of privacy -- a rarity for waterfront property. Plus, it's also fantastically located for cyclists who don't want to struggle up a long dirt road every day for their daily ride and makes zipping into Brunswick -- a lovely college town --- a quick and easy excursion. You do hear cars passing during the day, but it did not detract from our enjoyment of the house ands its glorious view. All in all, we highly recommend this house and would gladly return.
This rental was very much of a disappointment. We have vacationed in this area of Maine for 25 years..and have rented through VRBO all over the country..at least 30 times. To begin you had to meet a person to get the key and drop off the key..rather an inconvenience. On arrival the caretaker spent at least 45 minutes telling us everything we were not to do and a huge list of what to do. Including if I had lobster remnants on the weekend I needed to take them to the dump myself. We were also required to wash all towels, fold and dry them before we left at 10am and empty the clean dishwasher. The bed is hard as a rock and the sheets were old and polyester. The two TVs are so small, about the size of a computer screen..maybe 14 inch. But the two worse aspects were that the house sits about 50 yards from a highly trafficked road where the speed limit is 45mph. The road noise was constant and very loud..even down at the dock. Living in quiet Vermont I was undone by the constant traffic noise. Finally the beautiful dock and float for kayaking swimming etc. sat on the mud flats at lower tide..in our case from 9 am until about 5 pm. We were not able to use the dock for kayaking, or swimming, unless it was 7 am or 7pm. The middle of the day was super hot, and you would be sitting on the mud. The pictures are very misleading and the description of a private swimming cove is as well. I do understand tides..but this should have been mentioned...as well as the road. We basically left the house everyday to get away from the road noise and to go swimming at a beach 6 miles away. We left early the last day to spend the day on lovely Ogunquit beach...the best part of our vacation. I would not recommend anyone stay here if they don't like road noise and if the tides are against you,
Lovely long weekend in this well-appointed home. Easy access to the first floor bedroom for my elderly mother-in-law and to the front lawn to enjoy the amazing view of the private cove. Kitchen was well equipped, house nicely decorated and furnished. Close to local amenities yet felt away from it all!
Owner and caretaker a pleasure to work with and we look forward to an opportunity to return.
We had a beautiful long weekend in this well-equipped home. The view was amazing, access to the front lawn was easy for sitting and enjoying the view too! The kitchen had everything we needed and more. Easy, quick access to amenities. Both the owner and caretaker were wonderful to work with. I would recommend this rental!
