About Ellen Glew, owner

Having vacationed for many summers in coastal Maine, I decided to build a permanent home there, where I can enjoy weekends and summer vacations with my daughters and their friends (for now) and where I plan to live during retirement. I fell in love with the natural beauty of Harpswell - with its many fingers and islands, and I love the fact that it is 'off the beaten tourist track.' Everywhere you look there are water views that change with every turn in the road. Harpswell is peaceful, yet so convenient to the amenities of Brunswick, Freeport, Bath and even Portland (just 40 minutes away).

Ellen Glew, owner purchased this house in 2002

Why Ellen Glew, owner chose Portland and Casco Bay Area

It is easy to get to -- just over 2 hours from my primary home in Massachusetts -- and it is situated in one of the most beautiful coastal communities in Maine or anywhere in the U,S. Harpswell has more coastline than any community in the United States -- some 230 miles of shoreline and dozens of islands.

What makes this house unique

It is a wonderful place to just relax, sit on the float and read a book and watch the last rays of the sun playing on the water. I love eating breakfast out on the balcony, watching the lobster boats and all the wildlife on the water, hiking along trails with spectacular water views; enjoying the warm waters of Harpswell Sound, either swimming or just floating on an inner tube. It is also a great base location from which to explore the many attractions of mid-Coast Maine. For the more adventuresome, it is also a do-able day trip to Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We absolutely loved our stay at your house. The local lobsters and clams are to die for. The layout of your home is so open and airy, and we loved dining on the balcony. The kitchen nook and furnishings are cozy. And the waters of Harpswell Sound are warm -- you can actually stay in the water! Good family fun hiking up the Fairy House trail across the street up to that spectacular cliff walk. Lots to do with nearby shopping at Bean's and the outlets in Freeport, as well as the shops of Bath. Wolf's Neck State Park in Freeport also great for hiking. And for sand and surf, excursions to Reid State Park and Popham Beach are terrific. It's fun to explore the entire mid-coast region -- with trips to Boothbay, Pemquid Light and farther up to Camden and Rockland - best to do that on weekdays to avoid the Route 1 weekend traffic. Movie theaters, mini golf, and bowling in nearby Four Corners also good for family fun.

Truly unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best locations and homes I have ever rented. Fully equipped, tastefully furnished, truly a home away from home. Never felt out of place . The owner is one of the most caring owners I have ever dealt with, thoughtful and attentive. Available to talk live if anyone has any questions

Lovely spot, relaxing and convenient

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home, with well-equipped kitchen and comfortable beds. Easy access to the water via a secluded cove. Just a few minutes' drive to Brunswick or to a number of area lobster shacks. Kayaks and canoe available for fun. There is road traffic noise during the day, but not at night. Our biggest concern was the presence of (at least) one rooster not too terribly far away, and he was quite vocal during waking hours, a bit annoying.

Great house in convenient location

  • 3 of 5

This is great house in very covenient location. Close proximity to Freeport.

House is nice, very clean, spacious, kitchen well equipped. Our dogs loved it too.

Just few comments on negative side.

It is on busy street and we woke up to heavy traffic noise. That was bit surprise for Maine.

The waterfront is only at hight tide.

Mattress in master bedroom is uncomfortable. Could not sleep on it.

Owner's Response: Mountain Road is the access/connector road between Harpswell Neck (the mainland), Great Island, and Orr's and Bailey Island. This is why the house is conveniently located to Freeport, Brunswick, and Bath. Road noise largely an issue if cars are speeding. Harpswell is made up of several peninsulas or fingers of land and sounds/fjords. Therefor, much of the town's waterfront is tidal. So boaters, kayakers, swimmers adjust their schedules to the tides. Generally water activity is best 2 1/2 - 3 hours either side of high tide. Travelers might wish to check tidal charts when selecting dates and planning activities. Bed in master bedroom has custom-made, extra firm mattress. Guests who like a softer option might want to use either of the second floor bedrooms.

It's an incredibly beautiful and well-maintained property and I'd go back in a heartbeat!

  • 5 of 5

The house caretaker is so responsive and helpful and the property is amazing. It was easy to completely relax and feel at home there. The view is beautiful and we ended up spending all our time on the dock. I hope we'll be able to go back again next year!

Beautiful house, great spot in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this house. The location was an easy drive to Freeport, Brunswick and Bath, with some beautiful trails nearby.

The house and view of the water are just as lovely as the pictures. We loved being able to see the water from the kitchen, living room, one upstairs bedroom and the upstairs office nook.

We appreciated the thoughtful amenities available in the house (a well-stocked kitchen, boats and life jackets, a board game library, a folder with tons of information on the local area). The house layout was great for a multi-generational family (grandparents can sleep on the first floor with a private bathroom, kids have plenty of space to play upstairs or in the basement).

Owner's Response: Am so glad you and your family enjoyed your stay and that the floorplan/layout with all "necessities" on the main floor made the accommodations work for the senior member of your family.
