TSUBARA - a restored 90 year old Machiya in Kyoto - Elegant.Calm.Lovely

Overview

About the property

2 bedroom, 1 outdoor bath, traditional Machiya close to Kiyomizu temple.

Machiya Tubara is in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto.

There are so many sightseeing spots, famous historical places, temples and shrines in this area. And are many shops of Kiyomizu pottery and neighbours are very friendly.

Also there are many wonderful restaurants, easy eating places(izakaya, ramen noodle restaurant, yakitori restaurant...), bars, local shops, convenience stores, grocerry and public baths near here!

you can go to many places like that from Tsubara on foot.

The house is convenient for transportation(bus, train, taxi).

Tsubara was 90 year old Machiya called 'Shimotaya' once, we lovely restored all possible to original style using antique fittings & materials by traditional craftsmanship.

Tsubara has many Machiya's features ~'Doma' long Japanese corridor from the entrance to the garden, 'Hibukuro' open ceiling in the kitchen, old hand made window glasses, window lattices...etc.

And we prepared new comfortable equipments in it - air conditioning ,internet, microwave, washing machine, IHcooker, clean comfortable Futon ....more.

Especially, we set up 'Roten-buro' out door bath tub(Shigaraki pottery made) and 'Suikinkutsu' in the Tsuboniwa garden(small Kyoto garden)!!

'Suikinkutsu' is a decoration device in a Japanese garden that generates a sound like the Koto-Japanese harp~with drops of water. You could have relaxed bath time hearing its sound!

'Tsubara' is a very old Japanese word from 'Manyousyu' (the oldest Waka poet collection over 1200years ago!).

It means 'enough' or 'detail'or 'calmly'.

I thought it perfectly matches the house!

Experience a fascinating, peaceful, amazing your Kyoto stay in Tsubara !

About Koji

Hi, my name is Koji, I'm Japanese. My family and I were born and grew up here in Kyoto.

I like car, motorbike, eating, drinking, etc.

My wife Eri likes eating Kyoto cuisine, seeing Kabuki, music(singing & listening soul music, Stones, Clapton...),Kimono, seeing Maiko-san&Geiko-San dance....of course we like, no, love Kyoto and traditional culture so much!!!

We hope our guests will have a fantastic days in my house in Kyoto.

Koji purchased this townhome in 2013

Why Koji chose Kyoto

Although this machiya has gone by such a long time, it was been remained keeping quite original Machiya style.

I thought I'll give it a new life as a guest house.

What makes this townhome unique

Outdoor bath, beautiful Japanese garden, Suikinkutsu, long Japanese corridor......

Above and beyond - we would love to come back

  • 5 of 5

Our family of two adults, a 14 year and a 10 year old stayed 4 nights at Eri- and Koji-sans lovingly restored Kyoto townhouse April 15-19th.

The photos of this lovingly restored traditional townhouse speak for themselves and the information binder in the house is packed with useful information and tips.

The tub and the garden is a great evening treat in all weather.

The kitchen is small but has what we needed for preparing breakfast or smaller meals and the coffee maker with its stock of gourmet coffee pods was very welcome indeed.

The aircon/heater and the washer/dryer is as quiet as the neighbourhood, so don't do the laundry in the evening or you'll be surprised and embarrassed when the spinning/drying cycle starts a little too late for comfort.

The neighbourhood is a brief walk from Gion corner and just around the corner from the Gojushuin (?) busstop on the pink Raku bus route (easy transportation to the sights in Northern Higashimaya)

But the highlight of our stay in this particular place was Eri- and Koji-san who took the time not just to receive us the first day, but also to help us with some amazing restaurant bookings on an extremely short notice during our stay and spot on recommendations on this and that as we went along.

Thank you

Cecilie, Mark, Linea and Jarl

Owner's Response: Dear Cecilie, Mark, Linea and Jarl, Thank you very much for your staying. And thank you so much for your hearty comments. We're so happy you had a great days in Kyoto and Tsubara! This house is in really best area on sightseeing! Gojozaka bus stop and Kiyomizugojo station(Keihan train) are very close. Japanese traditional houses are made of wood, soil walls, glasses and Japanese papers and more natural materials. Also each of them have characteristic beautiful and sensitive forms and designs. We love this house so we want to protect it forever. And we also love eating so much, so it's no problem to recommend wonderful restaurants for our guests. (In fact there are so many splendid restaurants in here Kyoto!) You were lucky that you were able to take reservation at some popular restaurants in this time. We're looking forward to seeing you again. Many thanks, Koji and Eri

This is a truly special accommodation for anyone's stay in Tokyo. Absolutely lovely, traditional outfitting with perks like beautiful local ceramic touches and an outdoor bath and relaxing garden. It is a history lesson in and of itself! Koji and Eri were so helpful and responsive throughout, and the Machiya comes with tons of brochures, maps and suggestions. We very much enjoyed this experience.

This year's Cherry blossom was quite late, so fortunately it was best for you seeing it! Tsubara's special bath tub is made of Shiga prefecture earthenware. It makes guests amazing relax for their tired body by sightseeing. Please come again other season in Kyoto. We're looking forward to seeing you. Many thanks, Koji and Eri

What a wonderful experience!

We loved staying at this traditional Japanese house. The owners met us there at check in and showed us around. They were so nice and friendly. They can speak English fairly well which helped us understand many things about the house. We wanted to stay longer and wish we would have planned to do so. I would definitely recommend this ryokan to anyone visiting Kyoto.

Beauty, serenity, history and more

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful place in the heart of the ceramics hub of Kyoto. There were so many beautiful things in this place...from the lights to the water harp. Koji and Eri were so thoughtful and definitely took pride in their Tsubara and it showed.

Also a great location for transportation, bakeries, cafes, market and wonderful shops specializing in Bamboo implements, to Bonito. So convenient. We looked forward to the bath at the end of the day shopping and visiting temples.

My husband and I would definitely come back to Tsubara in a heartbeat!

A relaxing oasis

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Tsubara was the highlight of our two-week trip to Japan. We spent five nights at Tsubara and loved every minute. Eri and Koji were incredibly thoughtful hosts and insured we got the most out of our stay. They were kind enough to make a reservation for us to see a Maiko, made recommendations for dining, what to see during the pre-Gion Matsuri festival preparations, and even told us about a short-cut in walking to Gion. They were available to answer any questions we had and really went above and beyond to make sure we were having fun sight-seeing. Their love for Kyoto is evident and they want to make sure visitors experience what makes the city so amazing.

Tsubara is nothing short of fantastic. The home is just beautiful and incredibly comfortable. The futons and pillows were quite comfortable (they had every sort of pillow you could imagine so you can find just the right one), the sitting area was ample, the kitchen easy to use and came complete with a coffee machine and electric tea pot, and the garden-side soaking tub a welcome way to relax tired toes after a long day of walking around the city. We were also grateful for the washer/dryer! Staying at such a beautiful restored home allowed us an authentic Kyoto experience. It just wouldn't have been the same to have stayed in a hotel. We would definitely recommend Tsubara to anyone!

Owner's Response: Dear JoAnna, Thank you very much for staying our house Tsubara. And we're soooo happy to hear your wonderful comments! July is an exciting Gionmatsuri festival month, you were lucky at your days. Koji & I love Japan, Kyoto and Tsubara so much, so we always want all our guests have a great trip in Kyoto. But Kyoto has so many historical sights(17 world heritages and other many temples & shrines!), many kind of delicious restaurants, many interesting places(Geisha & Maiko town, Manga museum, monkey park, food market, etc.) and many events as festivals. So we recommend the guests the better way for spending efficiently as we can...(but sorry, sometimes it might be Eri's personal favorite point!?!) Because it's our pleasure foreign people would love Kyoto..... In fact, meeting Maiko girl regularly is very expensive, but we know some places where you can see it a little reasonably. Did you take photos with Maiko girl? Tsubara is very old house, so it might be not so convenient. But it's really old good days style! ( Kitchen, bath and toilet are new style, comfortable, we think.) It makes us calm & relax, even Japan native! Also we're always thinking about Tsubara's display or arranging flower (changing as season...). Thanks again, JoAnna & Your family. We're looking forward to coming back to Tsubara again. Next time we recommend Cherry blossom season! Best regards, Koji & Eri
