Machiya Tubara is in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto.
There are so many sightseeing spots, famous historical places, temples and shrines in this area. And are many shops of Kiyomizu pottery and neighbours are very friendly.
Also there are many wonderful restaurants, easy eating places(izakaya, ramen noodle restaurant, yakitori restaurant...), bars, local shops, convenience stores, grocerry and public baths near here!
you can go to many places like that from Tsubara on foot.
The house is convenient for transportation(bus, train, taxi).
Tsubara was 90 year old Machiya called 'Shimotaya' once, we lovely restored all possible to original style using antique fittings & materials by traditional craftsmanship.
Tsubara has many Machiya's features ~'Doma' long Japanese corridor from the entrance to the garden, 'Hibukuro' open ceiling in the kitchen, old hand made window glasses, window lattices...etc.
And we prepared new comfortable equipments in it - air conditioning ,internet, microwave, washing machine, IHcooker, clean comfortable Futon ....more.
Especially, we set up 'Roten-buro' out door bath tub(Shigaraki pottery made) and 'Suikinkutsu' in the Tsuboniwa garden(small Kyoto garden)!!
'Suikinkutsu' is a decoration device in a Japanese garden that generates a sound like the Koto-Japanese harp~with drops of water. You could have relaxed bath time hearing its sound!
'Tsubara' is a very old Japanese word from 'Manyousyu' (the oldest Waka poet collection over 1200years ago!).
It means 'enough' or 'detail'or 'calmly'.
I thought it perfectly matches the house!
Experience a fascinating, peaceful, amazing your Kyoto stay in Tsubara !
Hi, my name is Koji, I'm Japanese. My family and I were born and grew up here in Kyoto.
I like car, motorbike, eating, drinking, etc.
My wife Eri likes eating Kyoto cuisine, seeing Kabuki, music(singing & listening soul music, Stones, Clapton...),Kimono, seeing Maiko-san&Geiko-San dance....of course we like, no, love Kyoto and traditional culture so much!!!
We hope our guests will have a fantastic days in my house in Kyoto.
Koji purchased this townhome in 2013
Although this machiya has gone by such a long time, it was been remained keeping quite original Machiya style.
I thought I'll give it a new life as a guest house.
Outdoor bath, beautiful Japanese garden, Suikinkutsu, long Japanese corridor......
What a beautiful place in the heart of the ceramics hub of Kyoto. There were so many beautiful things in this place...from the lights to the water harp. Koji and Eri were so thoughtful and definitely took pride in their Tsubara and it showed.
Also a great location for transportation, bakeries, cafes, market and wonderful shops specializing in Bamboo implements, to Bonito. So convenient. We looked forward to the bath at the end of the day shopping and visiting temples.
My husband and I would definitely come back to Tsubara in a heartbeat!
Staying at Tsubara was the highlight of our two-week trip to Japan. We spent five nights at Tsubara and loved every minute. Eri and Koji were incredibly thoughtful hosts and insured we got the most out of our stay. They were kind enough to make a reservation for us to see a Maiko, made recommendations for dining, what to see during the pre-Gion Matsuri festival preparations, and even told us about a short-cut in walking to Gion. They were available to answer any questions we had and really went above and beyond to make sure we were having fun sight-seeing. Their love for Kyoto is evident and they want to make sure visitors experience what makes the city so amazing.
Tsubara is nothing short of fantastic. The home is just beautiful and incredibly comfortable. The futons and pillows were quite comfortable (they had every sort of pillow you could imagine so you can find just the right one), the sitting area was ample, the kitchen easy to use and came complete with a coffee machine and electric tea pot, and the garden-side soaking tub a welcome way to relax tired toes after a long day of walking around the city. We were also grateful for the washer/dryer! Staying at such a beautiful restored home allowed us an authentic Kyoto experience. It just wouldn't have been the same to have stayed in a hotel. We would definitely recommend Tsubara to anyone!
The stay at this house was the highlight of our vacation. The owners provide a unique experience with the comforts of home. We will return to Japan just too stay here again. It really gave us a central place to see all that the city had to offer. Thank you !
My husband, mother, and I stayed in Tsubara for two nights and it was our favorite accommodation during our two week trip to Japan; we just wish that we had stayed there longer! The machiya is located in a convenient neighborhood- just a short walk to Kiyomizu-dera, the Gion district, and the subway. It was also easy to hail a cab on the day that we needed to go to Kyoto Station.
Koji and Eri did a wonderful job restoring and renovating the machiya, it felt both authentic and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the tub and listening to the rain fall in the beautiful garden. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sight-seeing. The futons were very comfortable as well, which we can't say for every place we stayed in on our trip. We also appreciated that there was a washer/dryer available to use, with easy to understand instructions provided by Koji and Eri. The only challenge we had with the house was with the steep staircase- my mother (who is in her mid-60s) did not feel comfortable safely going up and down at night to get to the bathroom, so she slept in the living room both nights. It worked out fine for us, but worth mentioning to older folks who might have similar issues.
Overall, we would definitely stay at Tsubara again- Koji and Eri are lovely people, very friendly and very easy to communicate with during the booking process as well as while we were there. Next time we will just stay longer, Kyoto is unlike any other city in the world!!
The listing description is accurate and the property was clean and well maintained. The 2 tatami bedrooms with very comfortable futons are divided by beautiful rice paper screens at the top of a classical steep Japanese staircase. The set up suits a family or couple .The owners met us at the house and made us feel so welcomed and were happy to answer all our texts with suggestions and advise on Kyoto.
A beautiful house ,everything about it was perfect. The location was wonderful for wandering around Kyoto close to temples, great eating streets and transport but tucked away in a quite local street. The house was so thoughtfully arranged with the owners family treasures, small vases of flowers ,beautiful Japanese furniture and a modern kitchen full of everything we needed. The garden has a bathing hot tub which was blissful in the evenings. I would highly recommend this property for a stay in Kyoto .
Thanks again to Eri and Koji for sharing their beautiful house with us
We were greeted by Koji and Eri at the house who gave us a brief tour of the house as well as providing us with some information about the area and recommending some good spots for cherry blossom viewing. The house is a mix of old and new with the beauty and charm of a traditional Japanese house with some great modern comforts (I highly recommend relaxing in the outdoor bath after a long day of exploring). The location is perfect, very central and then there's a subway close by if you feel like going somewhere further out of town. This was my first time using homaway thank you Koji and Eri for making it so easy and thank you for a wonderful stay!
