About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms

Do you ever long for days past when life was simpler? Or wish your kids would have the same simple pleasures you enjoyed when you were growing up, like sun soaked days with no clock and nowhere to be, reading a book in the gazebo (which is 12 steps down from the house), or fly through the air on a tire swing?

Surf Cottage welcomes you back to the simple life…a true retreat from busy city life. Located 10 minutes from St. Joseph & 15 minutes from South Haven.

This renovated vintage cottage is situated on a wooded ravine overlooking Lake Michigan.

Enjoy fresh flowers from the garden or follow the wooden path through the quiet woods to one of the most pristine beaches this side of the Big Blue. Fill your days with sun, sand & surf then enjoy a candle lit dinner with your loved ones in the rustic dining gazebo on the bluff. House is best suited for 6 adults & 5 children including 1 in the crib. Fire pit conversation area being added in May 2016!

Guestbook comments from the manager

e came to beat the heat and to show my kids the wonder of Lake Michigan. We were not disappointed. The property is lovely. We had a large family gathering on a Sunday. The large yard accommodated a volleyball net, frisbee and football tossing in the front yard. The gazebo, fire pit and hammock, overlooking the lake were fabulous. The house is small, especially the kitchen, which will not accommodate many cooks. The second bathroom is off the kitchen which also caused some flow problems. All the bedrooms are spacious, well appointed with comfortable mattresses, pillows and bedding. Both bathrooms are updated. South Haven is 20 minutes by car and we enjoyed the sailing cruise and fishing charters.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This charming cottage is the perfect escape from busy Chicago life. The yard is huge, which is perfect for kids to run around and the view of the lake is outstanding. The walk down to the beach is so fun through all the beautiful, trees. The private beach is great. I felt as if I were somewhere more exotic than Michigan. I really liked eating dinner in the gazebo. You can enjoy nature and the sunset while still being enclosed.

The interior is super cozy and I love the decor. Each bedroom has beautiful fabrics and the beds and linens were very comfy. The master bedroom is a dream, so tranquil, with a stunning view of the lake and back yard. There is a lovely seating area just to relax. The perfect spot to read a book. The kids bedroom is huge, a great place to sleep and play. The room can sleep four with room for sleeping bags.

The Living Room fireplace is also a nice focal point, surrounded by 2 leather club chairs. The kitchen table expands and can be moved just into the next room to be placed along the banquette if you want to enjoy a meal by the fire.

I will definitely go back!

Nice location but too many compromises

  • 2 of 5

For the price, the house required a lot of compromises that were disappointing.

For context, we had five adults (one of whom is elderly) and six children (13 to 1.5 years.)

- View of Lake Michigan from the yard, the beach and the house was amazing.

- Front yard was huge and great - we brought a lot of yard games

- Beach was beautiful, clean, private

- Master suite and bathroom are exactly as perfect as the pictures look

- Kids' bed room was great--plenty of room for four kids and their stuff, plus a fifth on the floor, and it was nice to have legos and books to use as well.

Common areas: There common area consists of two small rooms that adjoin the kitchen. The layouts allow each room to fit max four people at a time. Kitchen is basically working-room-only. The only place to comfortably play a board game or card game is in the outside gazebo or move some furniture to play on the floor.

Dining areas: You can get three people at the kitchen table if nobody's cooking or needs to get to the bathroom. The only other joint seating is the outside gazebo. It's beautiful but it's no replacement for an indoor dining table for meals. We spent most meals eating off of plates balanced on our laps.

Gazebo: The gazebo is a very short walk and down @12 steps. The gazebo is well screened in but hot weather or rain will reduce its usefulness. The gazebo could probably have fit 10 people but there were only five functioning chairs in it (two were precariously balanced on broken legs.)

Elder-accessibility: The listing says "Elderly Accessible" which is factually correct but not friendly to Grammy once she got in the door. There are four steps to get into the house, the bathroom closest to the living area is very tight, kitchen floor has an odd slope.

Washer/dryer: Very small for the advertised number of adults the house can hold. When we arrived, the washer was broken because the prior tenant had overloaded it. We arrived on Friday, washer was fixed by Monday. (Thank you, Tonda!)

Odds and ends:

- Outdoor shower didn't work

- Dirty dishes in cabinets when we arrived

- Hammock and rope chairs were completely rotted out, unusable

- No pot holders

- Beds were lumpy

- Limited common area windows had no curtains - squintingly bright from 3-7PM

- Immediately ran out of laundry detergent and trash bags, had to run out and buy our own

- Advertised high chair so we didn't bring one but there wasn't one

- etc.
