Summerland Beach Retreat - Fun in the Sun and on the Beach

This wonderful tri-level beachfront home was originally built in the 60's, and is furnished in classic, comfortable beach style. With walls of glass, 25-foot ceilings and a neutral color palate, the home takes full advantage of the coastal views and gives a feeling of being suspended above the bright blue horizon.

Wake to a crimson sunrise at Summerland Beach Retreat. Play all day in the surf and on the sand. Fall asleep to the sound of rolling waves, and feel the ocean breeze. Life on the beach in Summerland is all about relaxation, rejuvenation, and fun in the sun!

From the entryway, step down into the Living Room that features plenty of seating for every guest. Open and spacious, the ocean awaits through sliding glass doors. A fireplace, TV, and grand piano are all nice additions to this welcoming space. An expansive upper deck spans the length of the home. Step outside and enjoy unobstructed ocean views, a dining table and a barbecue; this will be the main gathering spot from sunrise to sunset.

The country Kitchen is bright and fully equipped with large center island, prep sink, and even holiday tableware for those with reservations during the Christmas holidays. Flanking the kitchen, the Dining Room is on one side and one of two Laundry Rooms is on the other; the layout is perfect for busy families. On this same level is a Guest Bedroom and Bathroom, each with an outside door that leads to the upper deck and lower Lanai, as well as the walkway to the beach below.

A unique feature of this home is the spiral staircase that connects all 3 levels. Ascend the stairs to the upper level and find a generous size Master Suite. This beautiful space offers sweeping ocean views and a fireplace, and -in true loft-style- is fully open to the Living Room below. With the addition of a cozy Bedroom with twin bed, a second Bathroom and a desk area for work or study, the loft is an ideal Family Suite.

Descend the spiral stairs to the lower level that features 3 Bedrooms, a second Kitchen, Bathroom and second Laundry Room. Each guest room conveniently opens to the Lanai through French doors. The French Room is reminiscent of a hotel in Paris, with European style furnishings and sparkling chandelier over the queen-size bed. The Seaside Room with king-size bed offers plenty of space, day bed, and doors to the terrace outside.

The Mission Suite, with outside entrance, offers a bit more privacy, a comfortable couch, a wet bar and coffee maker. The newly remodeled Bathroom features bright white subway tile and glass block, and a large walk-in shower. It is important to note that this Suite cannot be accessed from within the home as the entrance is from the Lanai.

The Lanai is a comfortable place to dine and relax under the protection of the balcony above. Guests can also venture to the edge of the property to enjoy seating built into the rock wall that overlooks the beach below the property. There is even a fire pit for enjoyment after dark and under the stars. Out the private gate, walk directly down to Summerland Beach. Only local residents venture to this end of the beach, making this unique location feel more like your own private piece of paradise. Take one of the kayaks or boogie boards and paddle out, or simply take a relaxing walk along the wide beach where dolphins often play in the surf.

The quaint seaside town of Summerland is full of wonderful antique shops, local eateries and upscale shops, and is a 5-minute walk from the home. Situated just two miles south of Montecito and five miles from Santa Barbara, Summerland Beach Retreat boasts a feeling of being "away from it all", yet is close enough to enjoy the sights, sounds and scenery of this World Class stretch of the Central Coast. Escape to Summerland, where life is easy, and the beach is right at your doorstep!

We have been dreaming for many months about our stay in the beach house in Summerland and it did not disappoint. Wonderful views, yes we also the dolphins and had a great last night at Lucky's, which we will be an omen for the future. Great house, very comfy, welcoming--we would love to return to Summerland again.

Beach Life

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week's stay at this house by the beach..Everything was very clean and organized...We had a few sunny days which was bliss and then unfortunate fog rolled in...this has nothing to do with the actual home though! The piano was a lovely treat if you have a musician in your family..and it was amazing to be so very close to the ocean with actual whales swimming by and dolphins too !

Disappointed Don

  • 1 of 5

Horrible experience. Thought we were renting a "beach house" but all we got was a view. The water was heavily polluted with oil, the air smelled like a refinery. We had to load up the car and drive to a clean beach 5 miles away. This, even after we asked them if there was oil in the water., before we took occupancy. Their response was "no your beach is fine, the oil problem is miles away"! Kitchen attacked by ants every day. Had to leave house half of one day to allow fumigators in. Refrigerator broke, lost $500 worth of food. Master bedroom temp and air suffocating and no AC and not one window to open to allow air in. Train woke us up at 4:30 in the morning. DVD player broken, Asked for our money back after 2 days and Rental company, Paradise Rentals, would not respond to our request until after our departure. Absolutely the worst experience renting a short term beach house ever. And the hilarious part is their guest book is filled with similar experiences from previous renters. This company is just out of touch with reality. Renter beware.

Owner's Response: We at Paradise Retreats are sorry that Don was disappointed. One factor that may have precluded him to be disappointed was that he wanted to cancel his reservation a week before his arrival but our policies do not allow for cancelations at that late of a date! The issues with the oil seepage at the beach is beyond our control, we did recommend the beautiful Carpinteria beach just a 10 min drive from this home that was not affected by the seepage. We have since visited this beach and the seepage is cleared and in mid October 2015, people were happily playing on the beach, in the water with no oil problems to be seen! (And yes it is still warm in October! Beach weather year round this year!) The ant issue was brought on by hot weather, which is not the norm for our area, the ants were seeking water and we did send a service to spray and resolve, we realize it was an inconvenience but this was an unforeseen issue. We sent our maintenance team to repair the fridge as soon as we were notified. Fortunately this home has 2 fridges. Nonetheless we issued him a credit for his food. A/C is not a listed amenity for this home, many homes don't need air conditioning in Santa Barbara, especially ones right on the beach, but summer 2015 was a hot one and everyone felt the heat! We don't like to see guests disappointed and sad, we will go above and beyond to do all we can to resolve any issues that arise for a guest, we want our guests to experience a wonderful vacation with their families. We want guests to enjoy this place we are all lucky to call home!

Where do you live?

This place is unreal! My girlfriend and I had an incredible time staying at here. Kevin was totally attentive, nice, accomodating and a great guy to work with. I appreciate the opportunity to have stayed at this place and we hope to make this an annual trek!

Private and gorgeous property

  • 5 of 5

We rented the downstair units of this home. The most amazing part of our stay was the incredible patio, its comfort and view and the private path directly to the sparsely used beach. The gardens and vegetation on the property are wonderful. The setting could not have been more beautiful.

The beds and linens were great. The owner is receptive to any needs you have that he could possibly help with. There is not a formal living room, but there is plenty of room in the main unit to arrange the feel of one. The honeymoon suite is very cozy and has a small kitchen area that would be adequate for two.

We had a wonderful time.

Living in a Dream

  • 5 of 5

My review will be extremely biased as I not only stayed here but also proposed to my fiance here.

That being said, this property should be high on your list if you are staying anywhere near Santa Barbara. It has a location that can't be matched, sitting 30 feet above a quiet beach and affording you private beach access. The sound of the ocean will greet you morning, noon, and night and the back patio that connects to your room is gorgeous and only helps contribute to irresistibly, idyllic surroundings. You may be in the area for any number of reasons but as soon as you arrive, you will find it hard to remember any of them. It is that beautiful.

The hosts are incredibly responsive and beyond accommodating. They are willing to work with you no matter the request, so don't be shy. I could go on and on about the property but it boils down to this: If you want a private getaway in beautiful house with a serene beach setting, come here. Just be warned, you will not want to leave.

The perfect Santa Barbara hideaway on the beach

  • 5 of 5

I went to spend 3 days by myself on the water, looking for a secluded vacation with nothing but the beach and my book, and I found it. Most people aren't aware of how lovely the weather is in Santa Barbara that time of year, but it is usually sunny and around 70 degrees. Perfect!

I rented the Honeymoon suite, which is lovely and has the absolute best jacuzzi tub where you can sit, surrounded in bubbles and watch the sun go down on the ocean. There is a little kitchenette as well, which is very handy if you don't feel like going to a restaurant to eat.

I sat most of the day right above the beach, overlooking the ocean and getting tanned (in January!) on the chairs and table arranged for that purpose. You can see the seals and birds fishing right in front of you!

The owner is a very nice gentleman who knows how to make you feel at home. He can tell you all about the wineries in the region where you can do some tasting. He can show you how to kaiak right off the beach and you can borrow his kaiaks.

Summerland is a charming sea village where you can find nice little shops and antiques, get a massage or go up the road to pick up some first class orchids at the orchid greenhouse which is open to the public.

Overall, a lovely and quiet stay and I strongly recommend the place to anyone who needs to get a breath of fresh ocean air and recharge their batteries! Enjoy!
