About the property

The Boathouse is a large gathering house that sleeps 16 in comfort and is available in the spring, fall and winter. During the summer it is rented with the keeper's house which has two additional bedrooms and bathroom. Visit our VBRO listing #448157. It was purpose built as a family gathering spot for large groups by an Architect. Restored for family and friends the houses celebrates my daughters rowing career and all the friends we made traveling through the Midwest and East Coast. Completed in 2014 the house is in excellent condition.

Six, matching bedrooms feature new queen sized beds. The seventh bedroom the children's crew quarters features two bunk beds with privacy curtains and individual reading lights. Five bathrooms ensure the fighting over bathrooms will be kept to a minimum. Parking for six cars on the site maximum, a public parking lot is just around the corner for extra vehicles.

The large gathering rooms include a living room with fireplace, Kitchen/Dining room, lower level theater room and bluestone patio. Each space will seat 16 people or more. The sun porch, library and small office offer more intimate spaces. The stone patio with fire pit and free fire wood is a favorite area for evening gatherings. A outdoor kitchen area offers two picnic tables a grill and smoker.

Furnishings for the house are comfortable, modern and new in 2014 The house is filled with creative details, color and art.

The second floor has four bedrooms with soundproofing in the walls.

The complete lower level is for kids including area, puppet theater, home theater and a fifth bathroom with a kid size sink.

About John Hollowell

Joanie and I design, manage and renovate historic buildings in Ann Arbor. The Boathouse is our first Vacation Rental and it has been a creative rewarding experience.

John Hollowell purchased this house in 2014

Why John Hollowell chose Douglas

Location, location, and all the potential. The original house was purchased in an estate sale and was a large blank slate. We totally gutted and rebuilt the house's as a family gathering spot. Originally the wood used to frame the house came from a house that stood on the site of the current Douglas public beach.

What makes this house unique

The buildings are unique because they were designed and built as a retreat for large groups. It is not a old house that was converted to a vacation rental and filled with leftover furniture.

I remember being a child and we have built the puppet theater, crew quarters bunk room and engine room home theater all for the kids on the lower level.

The out door kitchen area, smoker and fire pit all expand the use of the property. The rear yard is fenced and private with a mature trees to provide shade.

Great Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

Spent a long weekend here with multiple families and young kids. House is beautiful with modern decor and appliances. Perfect size for multiple families. Large kitchen with new gas stove, 2 fridges, 2 dishwashers. 2 large gathering areas, including one perfect for kids (puppet theatre, toys, large tv). Love the kids bunk area (and so did our kids, ages 3-5). Fire pit was perfect for evenings after kids were in bed. Only small complaint is that basement rooms were chilly, while 2nd floor was warm at night. Otherwise, it was perfect and we had a great time. The owners have thought of everything! We will definitely be back.

Absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Our friends and family rented the Douglas Boathouse for an extended weekend away. There are not enough good things we have to say about our stay! The house was spotless when we arrived, accommodated every need we had throughout our stay and comfortably fit all 12 of us. The kitchen is awesome (had every tool imaginable) and the outdoor fire-pit and seating was an unanticipated bonus! We plan on making this an annual trip and will ABSOLUTELY be staying here again! Thank you for making our trip such fun!
