About Ted Hollman

'Ruby's Retreat' was built in 1993 by my parents, Loren and Ruby Hollman, as a family vacation home. After my father Loren passed away in 2010 and my mother Ruby was no longer able to visit the cabin, the family decided to keep it available for family use, but also open it up for short-term vacation rental. My name is Ted Hollman, I live in Colorado and manage and care for our family cabin. Our guests always comment that our mountain home has a warm and 'homey' feeling to it, that immediately makes you feel welcome.

Ted Hollman purchased this house in 1993

Why Ted Hollman chose Rocky Mountain National Park

In the early 1990s, Loren and Ruby decided to build a mountain home in Colorado, to enjoy in their retirement. As did all of the family, they liked the Allenspark area, which was close to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, yet enough off the beaten path to be relaxing in a natural mountain setting. However, Ruby laid out certain criteria that she wanted for the location: She wanted pretty mountain views; wild mountain flowers and trees, but not too many trees to block the mountain views; level ground to make it easy to walk across; it couldn't be located along a stream that could wash you away in a flood, nor could it be in a steep canyon where a rock could fall on your head! This was no small order for a piece of property in the Colorado Rocky Mountains! My wife Michele and I spent every weekend for six months before finding this ideal one acre spot that met Ruby's criteria. Once you stay at Ruby's Retreat, we think you will agree we found the perfect spot in Colorado!

What makes this house unique

Located in the Pine Valley area outside of Allenspark, Colorado, Ruby's Retreat is surrounded by mountain views in every direction. When building the cabin, again per Ruby's wishes, we put in many windows, so as not to obscure any mountain views. You can enjoy breakfast on the rear deck, relax in the afternoon on the front porch swing, and warm up in the evening in my Grandfather's lazyboy recliner while watching the flames flicker in the Franklin stove in the great room.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 3 night stay at this wonderful mountain home! The cabin was perfect for our family of 3.The home was clean, spacious, had everything you could need in the kitchen, and so many toys, games, and movies for kids. We were glad that there were plenty of fun things to entertain our 5 year old daughter in the mornings and evenings at the cabin. We spent most of the day at the RMNP and the drive into the main entrance to the park was maybe 20 mins away and a beautiful drive. We also spent some time in the Wild Basin area of the park, which is only a couple of minutes away from the cabin. Be sure to check out this part of the park since it is so close to the cabin and so beautiful. The home was perfect for our needs and a good value for the area. Booking was very easy to do online and because of all the great reviews and information available I felt very comfortable booking the cabin. My damage deposit was also reimbursed to my credit card within a couple of days of our stay. This is a great place to stay and we would love to stay here again on our next visit!

Cabin is clean and cozy. The landscape is Beautiful!

  • 3 of 5

I enjoyed my stay at Ruby's Retreat. Before arriving Ted kept in contact with me and promptly answered all my questions and concerns.

After arriving there was some confusion. First there is absolutely No wifi available...okay we use "land line " But you can't call out (thats fine) But We couldn't even call Ted as his # isn't "local" That when we started to have difficulty... the water/water heater need to be turned on manually. (okay figured it out) But had No way to let family Know we had arrived safely.

The second night the wind was so brutal that we lost power and it was COLD! By now we had "phone cards" so I was able to call Ted.

Ted offered some suggestions but didn't really seem concerned about our situation, suggested I crawl into an outside storage that required a key to retrieve some lanterns.. Seriously Its freezing and I can't See! We did finally get the power restored. But what disappoints me is his lack of concern for our wellbeing. He never checked up on us to see if all is well.

I would stay there again...because Now I know what to expect.

My final thoughts are... It's Beautiful Charming. Could use some updating as well as a complete overall of leftover items. Cabinets are cluttered with What is useful But geesh how long has it been there?

Don't get me wrong I'd love to return. Great location Beautiful property. Oh and did I mention on Christmas morning there was a family of MOOSE right outside our door !Then Again that same Christmas Evening!!! How Cool is That!?

Thank You Ted! A Christmas forever in our hearts. Great memories!

Owner's Response: Hi Deanne. Thanks for your review, but I would address some of the points in your review. Cell phone service is still not available in many rural locations in the U.S. and this is one of them. Most of our quests choose our cabin because of its remote location, which doesn't have all of the conveniences of say hotels in nearby Estes Park. In the information available on the Home Away Hospitality Suite and the information I e-mailed to you before your arrival, I indicate there is no cell phone service in this area. This information also states there is a land line with no long distance service and I therefore advise guests to bring a calling card to make long distance calls. Also in this information, I cite the WiFi which my neighbor offers free (unsecured) to our quests, but that it is not reliable for anyone living in this area. I will emphasize to future guests to be sure and print out the information I send them to make it easier to recall the check-in procedures (which includes turning on the water pump, turning up the water heater, etc.) and to remind them that there is no cell phone service at this mountain get-away location, and that there may or may not be WiFi at the time. Reportedly a new ISP is coming into our area so we hope to provide a reliable internet service in the future. Unfortunately, you did experience a severe winter snow storm and temporary power loss during your stay. When you called to inform me of the power outage, I recommended that you get our back-up kerosene heater from the crawl space for temporary back-up heat, in addition to the propane fireplace which was operating during the power outage. Fortunately power was restored in a short period of time. Power outages of course can happen anywhere at any time and cannot be anticipated. At our remote location of 8500 ft. altitude in the Rocky Mountains, we can get harsh winters and a lot of wind and snow, averaging over 200 inches each winter season. I'm sorry you feel I did not adequately address your concerns at the time, but I can't control the weather and I did learn from our cabin neighbor when power was restored, so I knew everything was OK then. I'll be sure to emphasize to future winter guests how harsh winters can be at this location, so they know what to expect and what to be prepared for. We are also considering not offering our cabin to rent during the harshest winter months, since I think Rocky Mountain winters do catch people from other areas off-guard. Sincerely, Ted

Property was stunning, experience was frusterating

  • 3 of 5

The property itself was gorgeous.

The night we got there we had to go through all these instructions on the wall about how to even get this house going, he turns everything off so we had to turn the water back on, we had to turn the heater on to make the water warm, etc. It is advertised that you get "patchy" service and a neighbor leaves there WIFI unlocked for his guests to use. You get absolutely ZERO cell service and there is no unlocked WIFI to use. That is completely inaccurate. There is a landline, which you can use to only call out locally or anybody can call in. We were confused at first as to why the water wasn't running and such, and we couldn't contact our family to let them know we arrived safe, so we attempted to reach out to Ted for assistance and his cellphone is not a "local" number so we couldn't even contact him. We walked to a neighbor's house to use there phone. After getting in touch with our family word must have gotten to him we had been there, he decided to check up on us by CALLING MY MOM'S CELLPHONE, which didn't work (obvious?) We found this out when we went to the little town in Lyons where you actually get cell service. We lost power on Christmas day, but the landline still worked. We found a calling card a previous guest must have left behind and used this to contact Ted, we spoke with him and he basically just said "He never had that happen before" he never once called back to follow up, not that evening not the next day to ensure we were okay, knowing we had no cell service. The refrigerator had an absolutely awful, unidentifiable odor. There was mold in the bathroom. And a lot of expired food left behind from other guests.

If the sole purpose wasn't go to and visit my brother (we reside in Chicago) I wouldn't have been pleased at all, but him alone made it worth it. But be advised and not fooled... You will get absolutely zero cell service. And there is no WIFI

Owner's Response: Hi Kayce. I would like to respond to several of your points in your review. We do shut down down some items at the cabin in the winter when it is not in use, such as the water pump, and we do turn down the heat to 55 degrees. This is explained in the information that I e-mailed to you before your arrival. The information is also available in the Hospitality information from Home Away, if you accessed that before your arrival. The reason we shut down the water pump is, if a water pipe were to break, the pump would continue to run and flood the cabin. In the information you received prior to your arrival, I point all out there is no cell phone service at this remote location in the mountains. Cell phone service is still not available in many rural locations in the U.S. and this is one of them. I do let people know there is a land line with no long distance service and therefore advise people to bring a calling card with them to make long distance calls. There were condiments (ketchup, mustard, relish) left in the refrigerator from previous guests, which we always check the expiration dates before leaving them. I can assure you these items were not expired, but we did find that someone had turned the temperature control of the refrigerator to "off", so we did dispose of them. We couldn't find any mold in the bathroom as you stated, but we do though-ally clean and disinfect between each guest. Unfortunately, you did experience a winter conditions, which no doubt was a sharp contrast from your Texas home. At our location at 8500 ft. altitude in the Rocky Mountains, we do get a lot of snow, averaging over 200 inches each winter season and a lot of wind. I'll be sure to emphasize to future winter guests how harsh winters can be at this location, which may catch guest from milder climates off guard. Regarding WiFi, our neighbor has left their WiFi unsecured (no password required). Unfortunately, it was not in service during the snow storm you experienced. As stated in the information you received ahead of time, WiFi is not reliable for anyone living in this area at this point in time. Reportedly a new ISP is coming into this area, so we hope to provide a more reliable internet in the future. I will emphasize to future guests to be sure and print out the information I send them to make it easier to recall the check-in procedures, that there is no cell phone service at this mountain get-away location, and that there may or may not be WiFi. Sincerely, Ted

The area is absolutely beautiful! The cabin is a good 1/2 hour toEstes Park and the entrance to National Forest. Closest place we found for groceries is Safeway in Estes Park.
