About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this house unique

Capitol Hill townhouses are quaint but tend to be very deep and narrow, and in consequence dark. This house is the antithesis of that, with its open floor plan and skylights. It is a whole-house rental, not a basement or condo, and within the context of Capitol Hill's 19th century houses, is relatively large at 1700 square feet.

Couldn't have been a more pefect location!!

  • 5 of 5

What a celebration we had honoring our grandson's high school graduation! We spent 9 delightful nights in this trendy, well appointed row house. The attentive owner was just a phone call away. This spacious home enabled two generations the privacy they needed. We were within walking distance of quaint restaurants, a city park, Union Station, and the Capitol Mall. This is a safe neighborhood, and we had no qualms letting our grandsons explore on their own. We would rent this special place again. Thank you for making our trip so memorable!

We all loved every moment of it!

PERFECT IN EVERY WAY!

  • 5 of 5

Best friends took our grandsons to Washington DC for their high school graduation gift, but it was equally a gift to us! We built memories for a lifetime. This row house was perfect for us; close to great restaurants, Union Station and walking distance to everything we needed. We've already decided to make another trip to DC sometime and renting again from Alec. His lovely home was so comfortable to crash in after an exhausting day and we enjoyed being able to cook in a couple of nights. Alec was quick to respond with a few small requests and is clearly the responsible type person we would want to rent from again. Would be remiss if I didn't mention the AWESOME king mattress in the master! Like sleeping in heaven! Great closet space and amenities, even down to umbrellas one may need. Our only disappointment was not having another bathroom upstairs, but small in comparison to the joy staying here.

We "Ubered" everywhere and highly recommend it. Staying in the Capitol Hill district made it close to main attractions and very affordable to Uber several times a day.

I would highly recommend this lovely home and sincerely hope to return one day!

Great house in an excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights in mid-June, family of 6 (grandparents, parents and 2 kids). Everyone had plenty of room. Nice furnishings, bedding and such, comfortable beds--they have great taste and have thought of everything. Location was ideal, just a short walk to the Capitol, Supreme Court, etc. It is a longer walk to get to the monuments and many of the museums but doable for our 9 and 12 year olds. We did end up taking taxis home at the end of the day when we were all hot and tired.

The only complaint I'd have, and it was minor, is that it was quite hot and humid while we were there and being an old house the AC is not perfect. To get the upstairs comfortable for sleeping we had to make the downstairs into an icebox, but it didn't really matter because we were out and about most of the day.

Owner was also very responsive when we left an item behind that needed to be retrieved and shipped.

Fabulous home! Awesome location!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for our summer vacation. It was our first trip to DC as a family and it was incredible. The house was perfect for our family. Everything we needed was provided - it was super clean, comfortable beds, great kitchen, plenty of linens. We have stayed in VRBO's many times but the owner of this one gives the best information packet of any we have ever rented. We quickly felt comfortable in the neighborhood. The location is perfect. We either walked, rode the Metro (our kid's favorite) or used Uber. Do not miss The Library of Congress. It was our favorite building and it's an easy walk from the house. We would definitely stay here again!!

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk.
